Temple in tiny town in Japan transforms into otherworldly beauty on special summer nights
Tokoji Temple, in Gifu Prefecture, has a pretty cool backstory. The legend goes that sometime around the year 1501, a local Zen practitioner was meditating in the mountains when he heard a clap of thunder and saw a dragon rise to the heavens. Using the indisputable logic that any place where a dragon appears must be special, a Zen temple was then founded in the area, which is today part of the Gifu town of Yamagata (not to be confused with Yamagata Prefecture).

No dragons have been spotted since then, but there are still some awesome sights to be seen at Tokoji, especially when it looks like this.

For a few special nights this June, Tokoji will be holding its Shinryoku, or 'New Green,' event, in which the electric lights of the temple's main hall are turned off and the illumination is instead focused on the surrounding foliage, resplendent in the vibrant green colors it just acquired in the spring.
With the soft glow of lanterns giving shadowy form to the architecture and providing extra contrast with the greenery, it looks like you've stepped into another world, and Tokoji's staff knows you'll want to take pictures while you're there. During the Shinryoku event, staff will be on hand to take photos of you using your camera or smartphone, though shots of the scenery by itself is also an option, as are still-life photos of the optional refreshments, matcha green tea parfaits and chirashizushi vinegared rice made with locally sourced ingredients.
In order to provide the sort of tranquil atmosphere appropriate for such beautiful scenery, reservations are required and can be made online here. There is a reservation fee of 1,000 yen per person, and the parfait and chirashizushi, should you choose to partake, are priced at 750 and 1,500 yen, respectively. The proceeds go to a good cause, though, as they'll be used to help maintain the temple, something that's becoming difficult for rural communities with shrinking populations to do.
The Shinryaku event is scheduled for June 6 to 8, from 7:50 to to 10:30 nightly.

Nintendo and Lego team up for an awesomely accurate the Lego Game Boy kit
By Casey Baseel, SoraNews24 A little over a year ago, Lego showed off its first ever kit for Nintendo's "The Legend of Zelda" franchise, one that lets you build one of the woodland environments that adventuring hero Link walks through. For the next team-up between the two companies, though, Lego's designers are recreating the Nintendo video game experience from the player's perspective, with an awesomely accurate Lego Game Boy. The design fidelity extends to the size, as this is a 1:1-scale replica of Nintendo's handheld system that changed the industry when it was released in 1989. Measuring 14 x 9 x 3 centimeters (5.5 x 3.5 x 1.2 inches), the dimensions should feel very familiar to anyone who grew up with a Game Boy in their hands, or who's familiar with the hardware as a current-era retro gamer. Included in the 421-piece set are a pair of replica cartridges, or 'Game Paks,' as Nintendo called them, for two of the platform's most memorable titles: "Super Mario Land," one of the Game Boy's launch titles, and "The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening," which opened a lot of eyes to the full potential of handheld gaming in terms of scale, complexity, and artistry. Some might argue that Tetris is the true quintessential Game Boy experience, but Nintendo most likely wanted the Lego Game Boy set to showcase titles that it developed entirely in-house. Featuring the Mario and Zelda franchises also makes for cooler artwork for the bundled screen pieces. In a particularly clever bit of design, these pieces don't attach to the outer surface of the Lego Game Boy. Instead, they fit underneath a clear plastic covering that serves as the replica's substitute for a glass monitor, preserving the overall visual effect of the actual system. There's even a piece for the Nintendo logo that appeared as the startup screen when you turned the system's power on. Other impressive touches include the fact that the D-pad, start, select, and A and B buttons are all pressable, and even the volume and screen contrast dials on the sides of the unit are accounted for. It's all so accurate that it's actually a little unnerving seeing the kit in mid-build, since it looks like an actual electronic device is in inoperable pieces. Totoro and Jiji tail seat cushions blend Studio Ghibli backsides with yours

Maybe it's a result of how cozy napping on the forest spirit's tummy looks in the Studio Ghibli anime classic, or because of how expressive his facial expressions are. There really are a lot of captivatingly cute points to his character design to keep track of. But sure enough, he's got a tail, and now there's an adorable reminder of that fact courtesy of Ghibli specialty store Donguri Kyowakoku. At 35 centimeters in diameter, the Totoro Tail Seat Cushion may not be big enough to accommodate Totoro's bottom, but it should work just fine for human fans. There's an embroidered-patch Medium/blue Totoro on the pad itself, and a pair of Soot Sprites make an appearance too. The big highlight here, though, of course, is the Totoro tail that sticks out for an anime aesthetic touch even when you're sitting on top of the cushion. The promotional photos show the urethane foam cushion placed on a chair for some extra padding, but it should also work great for Japanese tatami reed floor mats, as well as on-the-floor seating in Western-style interiors with carpeting or hardwood floors. Speaking of Ghibli tails from Ghibli tales, there's one character that no one will ever forget has such an appendage, black cat Jiji from "Kiki's Delivery Service." Technically, the Jiji Tail Seat Cushion gives you two versions of the character's tail, one on the embroidered Jiji patch and the other dangling out from underneath the pad.
