STMicroelectronics (STM) Falls 15.9% on Dismal Q2, Weak Outlook

We recently published . STMicroelectronics N.V. (NYSE:STM) is one of the worst-performing stocks on Thursday. STMicroelectronics fell by 15.86 percent on Thursday to close at $26.73 apiece as investor sentiment was weighed down by a dismal earnings performance and weak industry outlook amid tariff uncertainties. In its earnings release, STMicroelectronics N.V. (NYSE:STM) said it swung to a net loss of $97 million in the second quarter of the year from a $353 million net income in the same period last year. Net revenues were also lower by 14.4 percent at $2.766 billion from $3.232 billion year-on-year. Looking ahead, STMicroelectronics N.V. (NYSE:STM) remained cautious about its business outlook for the rest of the year, with revenues for the current quarter expected to decrease by 2.5 percent year-on-year to $3.17 billion, but increase by 14.6 percent on a sequential basis. Photo by Vishnu Mohanan on Unsplash 'While we expect Q3 revenues to show a solid sequential growth … we are still operating amid an uncertain macroeconomic environment. Given these external factors, our priorities remain supporting our customers, accelerating new product introductions, and executing our company-wide program to reshape our manufacturing footprint and resize our global cost base,' said STMicroelectronics N.V. (NYSE:STM) President and CEO Jean-Marc Chery. Investors Should Still Avoid Verizon Stock Despite Rising Earnings. Here's Why.

Key Points Verizon's already massive debt has risen further this year. Verizon now has to balance expectations of dividend increases against its generous yield. Reducing or suspending its dividend to focus on debt reduction could help Verizon stock longer-term. 10 stocks we like better than Verizon Communications › On the surface, Verizon Communications (NYSE: VZ) released a solid earnings report for the second quarter of 2025. The company benefited from rising revenue, earnings, and free cash flow, and a raised outlook bodes well for the communications stock's progress. What the report did not do is alleviate concerns about one area of the balance sheet where the company has struggled for years. That strongly indicates that without one painful but critical move, Verizon stock will likely continue to struggle. Verizon's ongoing concern Verizon's situation worsened in one key area: total debt. As of the midpoint of 2025, Verizon's total debt now stands at almost $146 billion. This is up from $144 billion at the end of last year as its unsecured debt, which typically carries higher interest rates, rose by $2 billion. However, when factoring in the total equity, or book value, of $104 billion, it becomes apparent how much strain these obligations place on the balance sheet. Admittedly, Verizon and its main competitors, AT&T and T-Mobile, have also depended heavily on debt to finance the construction and maintenance of their telecom networks. Verizon's debt was more manageable until 2021, when the company spent $52.9 billion to acquire C-band spectrum. Spectrum is a sort of "RF real estate" that grants Verizon the exclusive right to use a specific frequency in a geographic area. This was prime spectrum, which enabled many of its wireless service offerings. So why is the debt an issue? Indeed, the debt level itself is not necessarily an issue. Over the previous 12 months, Verizon spent $6.6 billion in interest expenses. This amounts to a slightly more than 4% in interest costs when factoring in the $154 billion in total debt, a relatively low rate. Nonetheless, interest rates have risen since 2021. Even though only around $2 billion of Verizon's debt is due this year, it will likely have to refinance that debt at a higher interest rate, meaning investors should assume that the cost will rise over time if its financial situation remains the same. Another factor is its dividend sustainability. Verizon has built an 18-year streak of payout hikes and likely wants to avoid the fate of AT&T, whose stock suffered for years after it abandoned a 35-year record of annual dividend increases in 2022. Verizon's dividend returns are also significantly above those of its peers. At $2.71 per share, its dividend yield is 6.4%. That is more than 5 times the S&P 500 average of 1.2%. It is also significantly higher than the yields of AT&T and T-Mobile, which return 4.1% and 1.4%, respectively. That dividend cost Verizon nearly $11.4 billion over the last 12 months. In a sense, it can cover this cost since it generated just over $20.1 billion in free cash flow during the same period. Still, with a dividend cut, Verizon could also use some or all of that $11.4 billion to retire debt. So far, Verizon has not done that, as its high yield likely makes the stock a draw for income investors. Also, if AT&T and other stocks are any indication, a dividend cut could lead to stock price declines in the near term. Nonetheless, lower debt levels would help stabilize the balance sheet. Over time, this could make the stock more attractive, as it has underperformed the market despite trading at a P/E ratio of 10. Income investors would suffer from both lower dividend income and falling stock prices in the near term. Conversely, the low P/E ratio may limit the downside. The improved finances could draw investors to the stock, possibly compensating for the lost dividend income in the long run. Making sense of Verizon stock Even with the positive earnings report, Verizon stock is likely a hold for now. While its dividend is generous, its high cost to the company and heavy debt burdens likely make the dividend's current trajectory unsustainable. That will lead to more struggles for Verizon stock if it lowers the dividend to better service its debt. However, investors should also note that AT&T remains a solid dividend stock despite slashing the payout. That indicates that as investors adjust to a new reality, rising earnings, a stronger balance sheet, and a low P/E ratio could make Verizon stock an attractive holding if it works harder to lower reduce its debt. Alphabet Had a ‘Standout Quarter.' Should You Buy GOOG Stock Here?

Alphabet (GOOG) stock rose by just over 1% on July 24, despite the company beating Q2 estimates on nearly all metrics. In this article, we'll look at the key takeaways from Alphabet's Q2 earnings and examine whether it is a good buy. Alphabet's Q2 revenues rose 14% year-over-year to $96.4 billion, which easily surpassed the $94 billion that analysts were expecting. The company's per-share earnings came in at $2.31, which was also ahead of the $2.15 that analysts were modeling. More News from Barchart With a 5.6% Yield, This Dividend Aristocrat Pays Monthly. The FREE Barchart Brief newsletter keeps you in the know. Sign up now! Alphabet Beat on Most Metrics While it's customary for company management to say that they are 'proud' of their performance, Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai began his commentary by classifying Q2 a 'standout quarter for us with robust growth across the company.' He added, 'As you saw at IO, we are leading at the frontier of AI and shipping at an incredible pace. AI is positively impacting every part of the business, driving strong momentum.' Here are some of the other key takeaways from the report. Google Search Reported Double-Digit Increase in Revenues: With all the talk of Google losing its dominance in search, the company's Search revenues rose 11.7% in Q2, and if anything, the growth rate accelerated from the previous quarter. YouTube's Performance Improved: During the earnings call, Alphabet said that it now earns as much revenue per watch hour in the U.S. on YouTube shorts as traditional in-stream. In some regions, the balance is actually in favor of shorts over the long-form videos. During the quarter, YouTube ad revenues increased 13% YoY to $9.8 billion, which comfortably beat the consensus estimate of $9.56 billion. As I have noted previously, YouTube remains an unappreciated asset in Alphabet's arsenal even though it is the market leader in U.S. streaming for the last several years, per Nielsen data. Gemini User Count Swells: Alphabet said that Gemini's monthly active user is now more than 450 million, and it saw a 50% increase in daily requests in Q2, as compared to Q1. Cloud Growth Gets a Boost from AI: Google's cloud revenues rose 32% YoY to $13.62 billion, well ahead of the $13.11 billion that analysts were expecting. AI is driving the growth of that business. Microsoft-backed (MSFT) OpenAI has also partnered with Google's cloud infrastructure, a partnership CEO Sundar Pichai said the company is 'very excited' about. AI Monetization: As expected, questions related to the monetization of AI investments did pop up during the Q2 earnings call. Responding to the question, Pichai pointed to the strong operating margins despite the rise in AI capex, while reassuring, 'We'll be able to have a healthy ROI on our investments.' Alphabet's post-earnings price action might look at odds with its otherwise stellar earnings. However, the disconnect can be attributed to four main reasons. Firstly, the stock rallied heading into the Q2 confessional and is up 13.4% over the last month, which is the second highest among its 'Magnificent 7' peers, trailing only Nvidia (NVDA). Second, the increase in 2025 capex guidance by a whopping $10 billion to $85 billion did not sit well with the markets. Third, some market participants are still worried about the 'existential threat' to Google as the likes of OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity challenge the status quo in search. Finally, there is the regulatory overhang as the U.S. Justice Department plans to break up Alphabet and force the company to divest its Chrome browser and Android operating system. It also wants the company to its end exclusive agreements with phone makers like Apple (AAPL) and Samsung. GOOG Stock Forecast After Q2 Earnings Sell-side analysts reacted positively to GOOG's Q2 earnings, and Oppenheimer, Pivotal Research, JPMorgan, and Raymond James were among the brokerages that raised the stock's target price following the report. Alphabet's Street-high target price of $250 implies potential upside of 29.4% over the next year. I believe GOOG stock has room to run higher given its tepid valuations. The stock trades at a forward price-earnings (P/E) multiple of just 20x, which is not only the lowest among its Big Tech peers, but also makes GOOG the only Magnificent 7 constituent that trades at a discount to the S&P 500 Index ($SPX). The depressed valuations are primarily due to the regulatory uncertainty, as well as concerns that the company might lose market share to AI chatbots like ChatGPT. However, Alphabet's Q2 earnings show that the company is yet to feel any meaningful impact from a flurry of competing products, and while these are still early days, so far Alphabet has handled the competition well. Alphabet also has services like Waymo, which will add long-term value, even as that business, which is part of its 'Other Bets' segment, is currently a drag on its profits, reporting an operating loss of $1.2 billion in Q2. Overall, despite the run-up over the last month, I find GOOG's risk-reward still attractive and believe that concerns over it losing out to AI rivals are a bit overblown. On the date of publication, Mohit Oberoi had a position in: GOOG, TSLA, NVDA, MSFT, AAPL. All information and data in this article is solely for informational purposes.
