Melaka killings show need for early mental health intervention in youths, says Nancy Shukri
Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said the ministry is deeply concerned about the rising incidence of mental health struggles among young people and is committed to providing accessible support through programmes that involve collaboration with parents, schools and community organisations.
'One of our key efforts is deploying counselling buses to targeted areas, making it easier for youths to access psychological support. Many are unaware that they are struggling until they are given an outlet, for example, through art therapy like drawing, which can reveal suppressed emotional distress,' she said.
Speaking at a press conference after officiating the Kem Kapten Keluarga (Family Captain Camp) in Santubong here today, Nancy stressed that recent tragedies involving adolescents underscore the urgent need for early intervention.
She cited a recent case in Melaka where a Form Five student allegedly killed his mother and elder brother.
In addition to supporting youth, the ministry is promoting healthier family dynamics through initiatives such as 'second honeymoon' programmes for married couples and parenting awareness sessions for new parents, she said.
The family camp, held in conjunction with the National Father's Day celebration, was organised by the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN) and attended by LPPKN chairperson Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim.
Nancy also urged the public to overcome stigma around mental health and to speak up or seek help when in need.
'In Sarawak, for example, there are many forms of support available for students and communities. What matters most is to talk, whether it is with a friend, a relative or someone you trust,' she said.
In her speech at the event, Nancy highlighted the growing demands placed on fathers in today's fast-paced society, where emotional, intellectual and social involvement is expected alongside traditional roles.
Quoting findings from the 2024 Father's Day Public Opinion Survey, she noted that nine out of ten fathers admitted that parenting today is far more challenging than in previous generations.
'The top concerns among fathers are the high cost of living at 84.4 per cent, and the struggle to maintain work-life balance, 72.9 per cent,' she added. — Bernama

The organiser also confirmed that the Raja Kecil Besar, Raja Azlan Muzzaffar Shah, who is the son of the Sultan of Perak, Sultan Nazrin Muizzuddin Shah, was one of the participants who competed in the 3-kilometre men's junior 12-19 age group. Meanwhile, Sivanesan said two of the injured participants have been discharged from Manjung Hospital, while those treated as outpatients are in stable conditions. — Bernama

MOH: Compounds kick in October 1 for private clinics flouting medicine price display rules
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 3 — The Health Ministry (MOH) will begin issuing compound fines to private healthcare facilities that fail to comply with medicine price display regulations starting October 1. In a statement today, the ministry said the current educational enforcement phase will continue until September 30, involving inspection visits and advocacy sessions. Premises that remain non-compliant may receive reminder notices. 'However, beginning October 1, 2025, compounds may be issued for repeated offences. 'Full enforcement will commence on January 1, 2026,' the ministry said. The price display initiative was rolled out on May 1 at private healthcare facilities and community pharmacies, under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering (Medicine Price Labelling) Order 2025 [PU(A) 141/2025], issued under the Price Control and Anti-Profiteering Act 2011 [Act 723]. A joint effort with the Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry (KPDN), the move aims to enhance price transparency and protect consumers from profiteering. Over the first three months of implementation, MOH inspected 842 facilities — including medical and dental clinics, private hospitals, and community pharmacies. 'Of these, 57 per cent were found to be in satisfactory compliance with the medicine price display requirement,' the statement said. The MOH and KPDN also clarified that no court order has been issued to delay the enforcement, despite a judicial review filed at the High Court by seven medical associations and a private doctor. 'The PU(A) 141/2025 order remains valid and in effect,' the statement added. The ministry reaffirmed its commitment to implementing the regulation in phases and with care, saying the approach is aimed at ensuring public benefit while strengthening trust in the national healthcare system.

Jellyfish sting 30 children at Lumut swimming event
Between 30 and 40 swimmers were stung by jellyfish drifting on the tide. (Perak Civil Defence Force pic) IPOH : Some 30 children taking part in an open water swimming event in Lumut were stung by jellyfish early this morning. Most of them suffered minor injuries, while three were slightly more serious cases. The competition at Teluk Senangin beach was the inaugural open water event organised by the Perak swimming community, with about 225 taking part. Between 30 and 40 swimmers were stung by jellyfish drifting on the tide. A girl and a boy, Nor Damia Qalessya Rosli, 9, and Aqeel Zafran Norhalis Syafiq, 10, were sent to hospital with a possible allergic reaction to the jellyfish venom, according to the Manjung Civil Defence Force. 'The incident occurred after the organisers flagged off the swimmers at 8am today; at 8.15am all the participants had returned to shore in pain and headed to the medical base to receive treatment for jellyfish stings,' according to the defence force's statement. State executive councillor A Sivanesan said he was told that the majority of those who were stung were boys aged 11 to 15.
