Ma'an allocated Dh98.6 million of community contributions across sectors in 2024
KHALED AL KHAWALDEH (ABU DHABI) The Authority of Social Contribution - Ma'an, the Abu Dhabi Government's official channel to receive social contributions, on Wednesday revealed that over Dh98.6 million of community contributions was allocated in 2024 marking a landmark year for the organisation. It was one of several numbers released as part of the unveiling of the annual community contribution report which Abdullah Al Ameri, Director General of Ma'an, told Aletihad was crucial to maintaining the organisation's key tenant of transparency. "We are intended as the Authority of Social Contribution to be the bridge and the connector between the donors, individuals or private sector companies," he said."We help allocate towards the social causes in Abu Dhabi and we're trying to raise the awareness and the culture of giving, and to invite more corporates to collaborate." Ma'an said its 51 projects supported more than 23,498 individuals across Abu Dhabi in 2024. The beneficiaries came from various demographics and received support for different issues ranging from health to student help. Of the total, the health sector received Dh36.8 million for nine projects focused on social healthcare services, while Dh33.6 million was directed towards 26 social sector projects aimed at empowering community members in Abu Dhabi. The education sector was allocated Dh20 million across eight projects to enhance learning opportunities. Additionally, the allocation of Dh8.2 million funded eight projects in the environment and infrastructure sectors, promoting sustainability and infrastructure development. Some of the key social projects included the facilitation of emergency housing for distressed families, supporting the wellbeing of inmates in prisons with support and training, and several initiatives to support the integration of people of determination into society. In the health sector, over Dh2 million was allocated for supporting those with Multiple Sclerosis. Funding was also made available for lower-income families for health insurance and those grieving from recent losses of loved ones and struggling with death-related transactions. In the education sector, over Dh6.5 million was provided for the rehabilitation of Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Bangladesh Islamia School and the Pakistani Community Welfare School to ensure a safe learning environment. Over Dh7 million was provided to low-income families struggling with their tuition fees. Furthermore, over Dh4 million was allocated to establish community parks across Liwa in an effort to improve the environment. Other initiatives that received substantial funding include mangrove and tree planting, mural painting, and playground renovation."We released this report to have full transparency regarding how we redirect the contributions towards social projects," Al Ameri said. "We want to invite more corporates to collaborate with the social contribution authority and use the methodologies that we have, redirecting the contributions and the CSR of their companies towards social causes."
Currently, Ma'an offers several incentives for businesses looking to contribute, including tax offsets, better access to in-country procurement, and recognition within the UAE. Al Ameri said this will allow the base of contributors and the reach of the projects to continue to grow.

UAE scores high on Social Progress Index with top marks in housing, healthcare
20 June 2025 02:32 KHALED AL KHAWALDEH (ABU DHABI) The UAE has once again demonstrated its commitment to social development as it secured impressive scores on the recently released Social Progress Index (SPI) Global Report 2025. It stood out in several categories including housing and healthcare. With an overall score of 74.04 out of 100, the UAE ranked second in the Arab world, and 49th out of 170 nations across the globe. This marks a significant improvement for the country, which has climbed seven places since 2011. The annual index measures how well countries meet the social and environmental needs of their people, beyond just economic factors like GDP. It assesses nations across three key areas: basic human needs, foundations of wellbeing, and opportunity, covering indicators such as health, education, safety, rights, and environmental UAE achieved top-tier performances in housing and healthcare, scoring 96.35 in housing, securing some of the highest global marks in this category. It boasted 100% access to electricity, universal use of clean fuels and technology for cooking, and zero household air pollution, factors SPI said were critical indicators of quality living standards. The UAE also ranked an impressive 7th globally for the affordability of housing, underscoring its efforts to ensure residents can access safe and affordable the country scored highly in water and sanitation, achieving an overall score of 96.54 and placing 12th globally. The country was found to deliver 100% of its population with basic water service and excelled in providing basic sanitation services. Healthcare was another bright spot where the UAE attained a score of 73.32, with notable strengths in areas such as equal access to essential health services and low prevalence of non-communicable diseases. The country's life expectancy at 65 and its ranking of 14th for equal access to quality healthcare signalled a well-developed healthcare system that serves both nationals and residents housing and healthcare, the UAE performed well in other pillars of social progress. It ranked 14th globally in basic education, with high primary school enrolment and high scores in gender parity in secondary attainment. Its information and communications infrastructure were graded as robust, with full marks for internet users and mobile telephone users, while access to online governance services ranked 37th worldwide. On the safety front, the UAE recorded a score of 78.22, with relatively low levels of interpersonal violence and good perceptions of personal safety, indicated by its 7th rank globally for feelings of safety when walking alone.

Israeli military kills 5 more Palestinians near aid distribution site in Gaza
Five people were killed and others injured by Israeli forces on Sunday as Palestinians making their way to an aid distribution site in the southern Gaza Strip came under fire, according to Palestinian paramedics. The Israeli military said in a statement that troops had opened fire in southern Gaza but said that it had directed warning shots at a group that was moving towards soldiers and deemed a threat to them. It was the latest bout of shooting near aid distribution points in Gaza's south since a controversial Israeli- and US-backed group, the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation, began handing out aid late last month. It had handed out no aid on Saturday, accusing Hamas of making threats that "made it impossible" to operate in the enclave, which the Islamist group denied. The GHF uses private American military contractors to operate its sites and has been accused of a lack of neutrality and independence by UN and other international humanitarian agencies.
