Microsoft moves towards AI transformation following 9000 job cuts in 2025
These cuts are part of a broader restructuring, with over 15,000 roles removed this year. Microsoft has stated it is not facing financial issues but is shifting priorities, with significant investment in AI infrastructure, including data centres and Copilot tools.
In May, Microsoft laid off 6000 engineers and developers, while the July reductions focused on sales and support teams. The company is using third-party representatives and AI tools that currently write 30 per cent of its code, reducing the need for certain roles.
Addressing the layoffs in a company-wide memo shared by Business Insider, Nadella described the decisions as 'among the most difficult'. He added that the company's overall headcount is 'relatively unchanged', despite the nearly four per cent workforce reduction.
Nadella acknowledged the uncertainty created by these changes, stating, 'It might feel messy at times, but transformation always is.'
He encouraged employees to view the shift positively, highlighting benefits such as 'more speed, more scale, more impact' and describing a future where AI researchers and coding assistants are readily accessible to employees.
Microsoft has identified security, quality, and AI as its current priorities, with AI described as a key factor in the company's future operations.
The move aligns with broader industry trends, with companies including Google, IBM, and Netmarble also adopting AI tools to restructure operations and reduce costs.

Kaspersky discovers new scam attacks through Google Forms
ISLAMABAD: A leading cyber security company has discovered a new wave of scam attacks that use Google Forms to target crypto users. According to a report released by Kaspersky's researchers on Tuesday, knowing the email address of the potential victim, the attackers send a scam email through Google Forms, which is designed to appear as a notification from a crypto exchange service. Users are invited to receive an alleged transfer in cryptocurrency by following a link to a website where they are instructed to contact 'blockchain support' and make a 'commission' payment in crypto to receive the transfer. Following these instructions could lead to the loss of funds, as the whole 'transfer' story is a hoax. The attackers used Google Forms – a free tool for online surveys – to create a short questionnaire with just one slot to fill in: the email address. The attackers themselves input the victim's email address into the form, and then Google Forms sends a questionnaire submission confirmation email to the victim. The attackers crafted this form submission confirmation to look like a notification from a crypto transaction service – indicating a sum to allegedly be paid out, urging the user to click on the link to receive the payout before it 'expires.' The scam email contains Google Forms attributes, such as a header with Google Forms logo, a link to the questionnaire (which the user never filled in), and the field value that had been submitted. The attackers bank on the fact that the email passes through spam filters, since it was sent from a legitimate Google address and the user is tricked by a catchy headline. Indian refiner Nayara trims crude runs in wake of EU sanctions, sources say
NEW DELHI: Russia-backed Indian refiner Nayara Energy has reduced operations at its 400,000-barrel-per-day refinery in the aftermath of new European Union sanctions that targeted the firm, five sources familiar with the matter said. Privately-held Nayara, which runs India's third-biggest refinery at the port of Vadinar in the western state of Gujarat, controls nearly 8% of the country's total refining capacity of about 5.2 million bpd. The sanctions package unveiled on July 18 against Russia and its energy sector has made it tougher for Nayara to export its refined products, resulting in storage constraints, two of the sources said. Since the EU curbs on Nayara, traders have grown cautious in dealing with its fuel, trade and industry sources say. Last week, Reuters reported that at least two tankers skipped planned loadings at Vadinar while a tanker carrying a cargo of Russian crude was diverted away from the refiner. One source said Nayara was operating the refinery at 70% of capacity, while another put the figure at 80%. EU-sanctioned Indian refiner Nayara takes Microsoft to court over outage Nayara ran at more than 100% of its nameplate capacity in each of the three months through June, the most recent government data shows. All the sources sought anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the media. Nayara did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Nayara typically exports at least four million barrels of refined products each month, including diesel, jet fuel, gasoline and naphtha, through traders. India has become the biggest buyer of seaborne Russian crude in the aftermath of Moscow's Ukraine invasion. Nayara, majority-owned by Russian entities including Rosneft, is a key buyer of Russian oil. Nayara's chief executive resigned after the sanctions and was replaced by Sergey Denisov, who had been its chief development officer, Reuters reported on Friday. On Monday, Nayara said it filed legal proceedings against U.S. software giant Microsoft following its suspension of services to the refiner. Nayara, based in the commercial capital of Mumbai, operates more than 6,000 fuel stations.
