Former NHL player Joe Pavelski wins the American Century celebrity golf event
SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Nev. (AP) — Former NHL player Joe Pavelski won the American Century Championship on Sunday at Edgewood Tahoe, closing with an eagle to beat former pitcher John Smoltz by nine points in a wire-to-wire victory in the celebrity event.
Pavelski had a 29-point round under the modified Stableford scoring system to finish with 73. He was second last year behind former tennis player Mardy Fish.
'I don't know what to say, actually,' said Pavelski, who turned 41 on Friday. 'But just an amazing week. This place is incredible. It means the world to me.'
Pavelski earned $150,000 from the $750,000 purse.
Smoltz had a 28-point round.
'I was trying to put heat on anybody, the top three,' Smoltz said. 'I was just trying to climb as many people as I could.'
Country star Jake Owen was third at 62 after a 21-point day.
Taylor Twellman, the former soccer player who shared the second-round lead with Pavelski, was fourth at 61. He had 17 points in the final round.
NBA star Stephen Curry, the 2023 winner, was fifth at 58 after a 23-point round.
Charles Barkley was 69th in the 90-player field at minus-17 points.

The poll is open for returning voters and the deadline for the preseason list is Aug. 1. Advertisement Mine is pretty much done, though I am going to do another quick digital sprint to make sure I didn't miss any spring/summer injuries. As I do that, I am also making notes about the teams just off my ballot at this point. When the ballots are unveiled to the public, I might be hearing from folks at Oklahoma, Tennessee, Iowa and Baylor for starters. I will remind everyone that the poll is fluid. What you think at the beginning of the season can change after a week or two. Our job as voters is to do the best we can right now, not in two or three weeks. A couple things on the ballots: if you write me, I will write you back. The outside input is so valuable. You may know something about Team A that I don't know. Please share. Advertisement And I won't ever criticize another voter's ballot. Not a cool thing to do. None of us think alike. We prioritize different parts of the game. Some of like low-scoring football (not me) and others like to se the scoreboard lighting up (closer to me). Nobody is right or wrong. Of the four teams not on my list, Oklahoma has a great chance to move in with an early victory against Michigan. The Vols face a difficult early game against Georgia. Win that and Tennessee is in.

British and Irish Lions add 3 Scottish players to the squad in Australia
BRISBANE, Australia (AP) — Scottish players Rory Sutherland, Ewan Ashman and Darcy Graham have been drafted into the British and Irish Lions squad ahead of the three-test rugby series against Australia. The Lions are 5-0 on their Australian tour ahead of the first test against the Wallabies in Brisbane on Saturday. The extra reinforcements announced by the Lions on Monday take the squad to 44, adding cover for next week's tour game against a First Nations and Pasifika lineup in Melbourne — the only remaining game on the itinerary that isn't a full international. Prop Sutherland, who played six games including two tests for the Lions four years ago, hooker Ashman and winger Graham were all on tour with Scotland in New Zealand. Graham was due to arrive in Brisbane on Monday, with Sutherland and Graham arriving on the weekend. Head coach Andy Farrell named a 38-man squad in May but has added his son, England veteran Owen Farrell, as well as fullback Jamie Osborne, hooker Jamie George and prop Tom Clarkson to the squad to cover injuries.
