PMK founder Ramadoss seeks ban on Anbumani's upcoming padayatra

The Hindu4 days ago
The ongoing tussle between Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) founder S. Ramadoss and his son and party leader Anbumani Ramadoss has intensified, with the former lodging a complaint with the Director-General of Police seeking effective measures to prevent the latter's upcoming 100-day padayatra 'to reclaim the rights of the Tamil people.'
Speaking to reporters at his Thailapuram residence near Tindivanam on Thursday (July 24, 2025), Mr. Ramadoss said the police should prevent Mr. Anbumani from taking out the padayatra (scheduled to be held from July 25) across the State as it would give rise to law and order issues in north Tamil Nadu.
He also sought police intervention to prevent anyone from using the PMK flag during the yatra. Mr. Ramadoss reiterated that his name should not be used by his son in any context, though he may use his initial.
Mr. Ramadoss said he had assumed charge as 'party president' on May 30, 2025. The executive and administrative committees were revamped and the list of office-bearers, including the honorary president, treasurer, and general secretary have been furnished with the Election Commission of India (ECI).
'I have duly appointed office-bearers to run the party and if anyone prevents them from doing their duties or falsely claims to be office-bearers, they will referred to the Disciplinary Action Committee and expelled from the party,' he said.
Referring to the alleged planting of a bugging device beneath his chair at his residence, Mr. Ramadoss said it was the most obnoxious development in Tamil Nadu, the kind of which was never experienced by any leader in the State.
The PMK founder said he had information that the bugging device was imported from the United Kingdom, and is also said to be available in Bengaluru. He wanted the police to expedite the probe into the case.

'How Such Kind Of...: HC Orders Probe Into Alleged Illegal Marriages By Arya Samaj Societies

Last Updated: The Allahabad HC ordered the Uttar Pradesh government to investigate Arya Samaj societies for allegedly conducting illegal marriages. The Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to probe into the functioning of Arya Samaj societies that are allegedly conducting illegal marriages across the state. The single-judge bench issued the directive while hearing a plea of a man, named Sonu, who is accused of abducting and sexual assaulting a minor girl belonging to different faith. The applicant told the court that he had later married the girl at an Arya Samaj Mandir. Justice Prashant Kumar noted that these societies were performing marriages without verifying the legal age of the individuals involved and were potentially violating the U.P. Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021. The court specifically ordered the Home Secretary of the state to appoint an officer not below the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police to investigate the proliferation of such 'fake" Arya Samaj institutions. It also sought a compliance report in the form of a personal affidavit to be submitted by the next hearing on August 29. 'However, the Secretary, Home, Govt. of U.P. is directed to get the matter investigated by an officer, not below the rank of Deputy Commissioner of Police, as to how such kind of fake Arya Samaj Societies have flourished throughout the State, who are getting such marriages done, in some cases even of the minor girls and thereafter, issuing certificates, and that too, by violating the provisions of the U.P. Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act, 2021," the judge noted. The court order came in response to a petition filed by Sonu who sought quashing of a summoning order related to an FIR registered against him in September 2023. He had been booked under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act for allegedly kidnapping and sexually assaulting the woman when she was minor. Sonu's counsel argued that he had married the girl in February 2020 and that she had started living with him only after attaining majority. However, the court found that the alleged marriage had no legal standing, as the girl was a minor at the time, the marriage was unregistered, and there was no valid religious conversion as required by law. The court also pointed out that the victim and the accused belonged to different religions and that the ceremony reportedly conducted at an Arya Samaj Mandir in Prayagraj did not meet the legal standards set by the UP Marriage Registration Rules, 2017. Subsequently, the court dismissed Sonu's plea to quash the proceedings, ruling that the alleged marriage could not be considered legally valid. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. MDMA drug lab busted in Mysuru, Mumbai cops lead raid with Karnataka Police support

An illegal MDMA (Ecstasy) drug manufacturing unit was busted in Mysuru on Saturday by the Maharashtra police, working in close coordination with the Mysuru City police. The joint operation led to the seizure of a substantial quantity of the synthetic drug and the arrest of four individuals, who have since been taken to Mumbai for further investigation. The raid was the result of actionable intelligence obtained during an earlier arrest made by the Mumbai police, which subsequently led them to the Mysuru location. Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara, addressing reporters in Davangere on Sunday, confirmed the development and expressed serious concern over the discovery. "A drug manufacturing centre for MDMA was unearthed in Mysuru through an operation conducted by Mumbai police with support from our local police. Some people have been apprehended. This is extremely alarming," he said. "Since this occurred in our jurisdiction, we need to find out how long this unit was operating, whether it had been active for more than the 20 days initially suspected, and to whom the drugs were being supplied. All these details will be examined thoroughly," Parameshwara said. Meanwhile, in an unrelated but simultaneous effort to clamp down on drug networks, Bengaluru Police conducted a surprise sweep across 13 police station limits in the city's North Division on Sunday. The operation, officials said, was part of an intensified campaign against suspected drug dealers and habitual offenders. As many as 106 individuals were picked up for questioning during the checks. These included those previously booked in drug-related cases, known drug users, and others whose activities had raised suspicions. Police collected updated information about their movements, employment status, court case appearances, and any outstanding warrants. (With ANI inputs)
