EWEC and Burjeel Holdings build pivotal partnership to accelerate carbon neutrality in healthcare

CECs, issued by the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE), are the only recognised instruments in Abu Dhabi to trace electricity from renewable and clean generation sources, allowing companies to verify the clean energy consumed, and lower their Scope 2 emissions. The pivotal agreement marks a key milestone in Burjeel Holdings' carbon neutrality journey and underscores both organisations' commitment to sustainability and decarbonisation.

UAE temperatures hit 51.8°C: Doctors warn of fainting episodes, heat strokes, sunburns
As temperatures soared to 51.8°C in Sweihan, Al Ain, on Friday, August 1, the highest so far this year, health experts in the UAE are urging residents to take extra precautions, especially during the Al Mirzam period, considered the most extreme phase of hot weather during summer in the region. The heat comes amid the Waghrat Al Qayz, or 'burning heat,' a phase that extends from July 29 to August 10. It is characterised by intensely dry desert winds known as samum, which raise risks of dehydration, heat strokes, and other health complications. 'We have seen a noticeable rise in heat-related emergency room visits in recent days,' said Dr Mohammad Fityan, climate health expert at Burjeel Holdings' Centre for Climate and Health. 'Dehydration, sunburn, heat exhaustion, and worsening of chronic illnesses like heart or kidney disease are increasingly common,' added Dr Fityan. Healthcare specialists also mentioned that even healthy individuals are vulnerable to this level of heat. 'Temperatures above 50 degrees Celsius can cause severe exhaustion and rapid dehydration. Children, the elderly, and outdoor workers face greater danger due to reduced ability to regulate body temperature.' Doctors' recommendations Dr Baiju Faizal, consultant of internal medicine at Lifecare Hospital, Musaffah, urged residents not to expose themselves to the sun directly. 'Even brief exposure can lead to fainting episodes, heatstroke, and complications like electrolyte imbalance, especially in people with underlying conditions like asthma or diabetes. We are also seeing an uptick in fungal infections and acute kidney failure.' He warned that improper hydration or overconsumption of plain water without electrolytes can worsen symptoms in older adults, sometimes leading to low sodium levels and confusion. Doctors advise residents to drink at least 3 to 4 litres of fluids daily, including coconut water, oral rehydration solutions, and fruits rich in water, like watermelon and oranges. They also recommend wearing loose, light-coloured clothing, avoiding the sun between 10am and 4pm, and using sunscreen. Despite the heat, Dubai continues to find creative ways to promote fitness. The Dubai Mallathon, launched this week across various malls, invites residents to jog or walk indoors from 7am to 10am for free, offering a cool alternative to outdoor exercise. Many fitness enthusiasts are being spotted jogging at malls in Dubai. Doctors say initiatives like the Mallathon can be effective in maintaining physical health during periods of high heat without exposing individuals to sunstroke risks. As the Al Mirzam period continues through August 10, experts stress that awareness, hydration, and limited exposure to direct heat are key to staying safe.

A detailed, nationwide action plan has been set for the UAE to achieve climate neutrality by 2050 – and power has been identified as one of the six sectors at the heart of the provider Etihad Water and Electricity (EtihadWE), which serves the Northern Emirates, empowers its communities to actively participate in the energy Distributed Solar System (DSS) initiative – in partnership with the Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure – enables residents, businesses, and agricultural entities to become 'prosumers'. Through the EtihadWE's rooftop photovoltaic (PV) systems, its prosumers are able to generate clean solar energy and contribute some surplus back to the grid. 'This approach delivers tangible environmental benefits. While the full impact on carbon emissions is subject to ongoing measurement, the early adoption rates, positive feedback, and growing number of certified installations are highly encouraging,' Eng. Yousif Ahmed Al Ali, CEO of EtihadWE, told Aletihad . 'This initiative directly contributes to the UAE's ambitious clean energy targets and underscores our commitment to a sustainable future, one rooftop at a time.'Leveraging advanced technologies, the utility provider has also deployed nearly 500,000 smart meters, covering more than half of its network. Abu Dhabi Department of Energy organizes awareness sessions for gas system safety
Abu Dhabi: The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy (DoE), in partnership with the Majalis Abu Dhabi at the Presidential Court, has organized a series of awareness briefings concerning safety procedures for gas systems inside buildings. These sessions took place during the first half of 2025 as part of the DoE's ongoing efforts to promote social awareness and consolidate public safety practices in the Emirate. This initiative is intended to spread best practices for the safe use of gas in both domestic and commercial environments, and to elevate the community's readiness for responding to emergencies. Such measures are instrumental in protecting lives and property and in raising safety levels throughout the different areas of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. There was broad community participation in the sessions, which took place in various community Majalis throughout Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and Al Dhafra. Those present were provided with the opportunity to put forward their questions, provide their comments, and share their own experiences. A number of DoE officials and employees were in attendance, with the objective of developing initiatives that yield a sustainable socio-economic impact. The importance of direct outreach to residents and the use of community Majalis as essential platforms for enhancing constructive discussion and listening to the feedback and suggestions of society's members was affirmed by Eng. Falling under the umbrella of the "Year of Community," this initiative is also a component of the DoE's efforts to reinforce effective communication with the public. It does so by engaging with different societal segments and capitalizing on the essential function of the Majalis in promoting awareness and reinforcing a culture of safety. Sessions were conducted at a number of community Majalis, namely: the Mohammed bin Zayed City Majlis, Khalifa City Majlis, Al Falah Majlis, Al Rahbah Majlis, and the Hilal Zaid Al-Shehhi Majlis, along with the Remaah Majlis, the Al Alia Majlis in Al Ain City, and the Al Sila Majlis in the Al Dhafra area.
