Ekta Kapoor On Anupamaa vs Kyunki...: "Pitting Women Against Each Other..."

New Delhi:
Ekta Kapoor's cult show Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, now Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi reboot, will have a premiere tonight on Star Plus as well as on a streaming giant. Smriti Irani AKA Tulsi Virani is set to make a grand comeback on television. Ahead of the premiere, producer Ekta Kapoor weighed in on the debate around Anupamaa vs Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, gaining traction on the Internet.
What's Happening
Speaking to Brut, Ekta Kapoor said, "Yesterday I was seeing some videos of Anupamaa having a problem as Kyunki is coming. I felt that was in such bad taste."
She added, "She [Rupali] is such a big star. Anupamaa the show, the creator Rajan... has done what nobody else could do in the last seven years. They will continue to be number 1. They should continue to be number 1."
"We are coming in for our purpose. To tell our story. These unfair comparisons between lead characters and lead shows is so unnecessary and pitting women against each other, pitting content against each other is so uncalled for," Ekta concluded.
For the unversed, Anupamaa is a show headlined by Rupali Ganguly. Banking on the immense popularity of the show, Rupali cemented her position as one of the highest-paid actresses of the Indian television.
The show has been produced by Rajan Shahi.
About The OG Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi
Originally aired from July 2000 to November 2008 on Star Plus, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi revolved around the ideal daughter-in-law, Tulsi Virani (played by Smriti Irani), the daughter of a pandit who marries Mihir, the grandson of business tycoon Govardhan Virani.
Apart from Smriti and Amar Upadhyay, the show also featured Inder Kumar, Ronit Roy, Mandira Bedi and Achint Kaur.
In an exclusive conversation with NDTV, Smriti Irani opened up how Ekta Kapoor's reboot version would appeal to the newer generation.
She said, "The show spoke about marital rape and euthanasia 25 years ago, and those were not issues that were touched by even mainstream cinema. We did it commercially in a television slot which was meant for family viewing and family drama. You need to understand that 25 years ago, there was no pay parity, where your talent decided and not your gender about how much you will be paid. The fact that Ekta was given a 10:30 slot, which was a dead slot, we created prime time. But that was a female producer, so you had a female producer shunted to a 10:30 slot, they thought maybe you know, let's take a chance."

Yuzvendra Chahal Says He Was Called 'Cheater' After Divorce With Dhanashree: 'I Had Suicidal Thoughts'

Last Updated: Yuzvendra Chahal revealed he was labelled a "cheater" after divorce, faced anxiety attacks and suicidal thoughts, and found support in friends like Mahvash. Indian cricketer Yuzvendra Chahal has opened up for the first time about the mental health challenges he faced following his much-publicised divorce from choreographer and influencer Dhanashree Verma. In an interview on the Raj Shamani podcast, Chahal shared that he was wrongly labelled as a 'cheater" after the separation, despite having been loyal throughout the relationship. 'After my divorce, I was called cheater. And I have never cheated in my life. I'm an extremely loyal person. You wouldn't even find a loyal person like me. I deeply care about my people," he said. Chahal expressed that what hurt him the most was how people jumped to conclusions without knowing the full story. 'That's what affects me that you guys don't even know what has happened and yet you are blaming me," he added. Chahal, known for his calm demeanour on the field, said he struggled with the intense trolling and baseless assumptions that flooded the internet after his breakup. 'Just because I'm seen with someone doesn't mean you'll write anything for views. And if you react and speak up, then 10 more people will come and troll you even more. Because they want masala all the time," he said, referring to his alleged relationship with RJ Mahvash. 'I know my truth and the people who are close to me know my truth so I don't care. Why do I justify to anybody when I haven't done anything wrong?" he added firmly. 'I Was In Depression For 5 Months": Yuzvendra Chahal The leg-spinner revealed that during this emotionally turbulent period, he experienced severe anxiety and even suicidal thoughts. 'I'd been in depression for four to five months. I got anxiety attacks. Only my close ones know this. I have never shared this anywhere for sympathy. I used to have suicidal thoughts because my mind had completely stopped working," Chahal admitted. He further revealed that he took a break from cricket to deal with his mental health. Despite having all the material comforts in life, he said he felt empty. 'You have everything in your life, all the luxuries, but you still don't have happiness. Then you get these thoughts — what to do with this life, just leave it," he shared. Yuzvendra Chahal Credits RJ Mahvash For Her Constant Support Chahal credited his close friends, including Pratik Pawar and RJ Mahvash, for helping him during his lowest phase. 'I didn't want to share it with my family because I didn't want to bother them. So, my close friends really helped me during this period. They were with me," he concluded.
