LOS ANGELES - Flag football will take center stage during the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, after organizers confirmed the sport's medal matches will be held in primetime slots in its first-ever Olympic appearance.
The International Federation of American Football (IFAF), in partnership with the National Football League (NFL), announced on Monday that the men's and women's medal games are scheduled for Friday evening, July 21, and Saturday afternoon, July 22, at BMO Stadium near downtown Los Angeles.
The announcement comes as senior IFAF and NFL delegations visit Los Angeles for the first official meetings with Games organizers, marking exactly three years to the day before the LA28 Opening Ceremony.
"Flag football will definitely be a hot ticket at the Games," IFAF President Pierre Trochet told Reuters on Monday.
"We're going to be at a great stadium right in the heart of the city and we're going to have fantastic players on the field with NFL players available."
Flag football is a non-contact variation of American football in which players wear flags attached to their waists. Instead of tackling, defensive players must remove a flag from the ball carrier to end a play. The sport is played on a smaller field with fewer players per side.
The inclusion of flag football in LA28 follows a vote by NFL owners allowing NFL players to participate in the Olympic competition.

Trochet said the primetime scheduling was a clear statement of a shared ambition to ensure flag football contributes a "defining element" of LA28's success.
Organizers hope to capture the excitement of "Friday Night Lights," a cherished American tradition, and generate iconic moments for the sport's Olympic launch.
"We could not dream of a better setup to start our debut in the Olympic movement and Olympic journey," he said.
The IFAF delegation, including managing director Andy Fuller and senior NFL executives, is set to tour Exposition Park and other venues over a three-day visit.
The group will also meet with key LA28 organizing committee members and attend the launch of a new NFL flag football brand campaign, which features Olympic gymnastics champion Jordan Chiles and flag football athletes from Australia and the U.S. REUTERS

Italy faces calls to cancel concert led by pro-Putin conductor

Find out what's new on ST website and app. FILE PHOTO: Russian President Vladimir Putin (L) awards Mariinsky Theatre's Artistic Director Valery Gergiev during a ceremony at the Kremlin in Moscow, Russia, September 22, 2016. REUTERS/Ivan Sekretarev/Pool/File Photo ROME - The wife of late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is urging Italy to cancel a concert by a Russian conductor who has been shunned in the West since the invasion of Ukraine. Valery Gergiev is scheduled to perform on July 27 at a festival in the Reggia di Caserta palace near Naples, leading a local philharmonic orchestra and soloists from the Mariinsky Theatre Orchestra in St Petersburg, which he leads. "There is a big problem" with the festival, Yulia Navalnaya wrote in an op-ed for Tuesday's la Repubblica newspaper, calling Gergiev an "intimate friend" of Russian President Vladimir Putin and a cultural ambassador for his administration. "How is it possible that in the summer of 2025, three years after the start of the conflict in Ukraine, Valery Gergiev, Putin's accomplice (...) is suddenly invited to Italy to participate in a festival," she wrote. Gergiev did not immediately comment on her remarks. In 2022, several Western cultural institutions, including Milan's La Scala, the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra and New York's Carnegie Hall severed ties with Gergiev over his failure to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine. The head of the Campania region, which is organising the festival, said Gergiev had been invited to keep "channels of communication open even with those who do not think like us." Top stories Swipe. "We are not asking these men of culture to answer for the political choices of the leaders of their respective countries," he said. Italy's right-wing government has supported Ukraine and international sanctions against Moscow. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's office and the Ministry of Culture declined comment on Gergiev's invitation. Navalny's Anti-Corruption Foundation wrote last week to the Italian interior minister, urging him to deny entry to Gergiev, and to the culture minister and the director of the Reggia di Caserta, asking them to cancel the concert. Navalny died suddenly in February 2024 in an Arctic penal colony at the age of 47. He said the charges against him, including fraud and extremism, were trumped up to silence him. Gergiev, 72, was made director of Moscow's Bolshoi Theatre in 2023, despite being banished from Western concert halls. REUTERS

San Antonio Spurs' star Victor Wembanyama cleared to return: reports

Find out what's new on ST website and app. Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs attending a 2025 NBA Summer League game between the Spurs and the Dallas Mavericks at the Thomas & Mack Centre on July 12, 2025, in Las Vegas, Nevada. NEW YORK – Victor Wembanyama has been medically cleared to return to the San Antonio Spurs after being sidelined in February with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, according to multiple reports on July 14. The 21-year-old Frenchman told L'Equipe, 'I'm officially cleared to return,' in a story published on Monday with ESPN and confirming the Spurs have cleared Wembanyama's return for next season. 'Wemby' was the National Basketball Association (NBA) Rookie of the Year in 2024 and an NBA All-Star this past season, which ended on Feb 20 when the team shut him down after the shoulder injury was discovered. The 2.21m centre averaged 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 3.8 blocked shots and 1.1 steals a game over 46 contests for the Spurs last season. The NBA club had he was expected back in time for the start of Spurs training camp in late September but his recovery came much earlier than first predicted. Wembanyama has been in Las Vegas for the past few days watching the Spurs' newest prospects play in the NBA Summer League. Elsewhere, Philadelphia 76ers star forward Paul George underwent arthroscopic left knee surgery on July 14 after suffering an injury in a recent workout, the NBA team announced. The 35-year-old American had a successful operation in New York and will begin a rehabilitation programme with progress regularly monitored and a re-evaluation before the start of training camp in late September. George, a nine-time NBA All-Star, was signed by the Sixers last July after stints with the Indiana Pacers, Oklahoma City Thunder and the Los Angeles Clippers. Philadelphia, who have not gone past the second round of the play-offs since losing to the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2001 NBA Finals, was expected to contend for the crown with George joining star centre Joel Embiid and guard Tyrese Maxey on a four-year deal worth US$212 million (S$271.7 million). But the 76ers went 24-58, their worst record since 2015-16, and missed the play-offs. George was nagged by multiple injuries including a knee bone bruise and adductor issues and was benched for the season on March 17 with knee injuries, after averaging 16.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.3 assists in 41 games. Embiid played in only 19 games due to injuries and the star trio with George and Maxey were only on the court together in 15 contests. Over a 15-season NBA career, George has averaged 20.6 points, 6.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.7 steals a game. Meanwhile, the Cleveland Cavaliers signed president of basketball operations Koby Altman to a contract extension through the 2029-30 season, the team announced July 14, following an ESPN report. Members of Altman's staff – including general manager Mike Gansey, assistant general manager Brandon Weems, vice-president of basketball operations/general counsel Jason Hillman and vice-president of basketball strategy and personnel Jon Nichols – were also extended through 2030.
