‘Metro... In Dino' review: Love feels a tad dated in Anurag Basu's multi-city saga
It's the track that most lends itself to laughs as both play the game of deception for different purposes—one to seek an escape, the other to impart a lesson. And it enables Basu to look at the fleeting nature of love in the digital age. Tripathi and SenSharma are just the right fit for the odd couple whose repartee keeps things afloat. On the extreme end is the story of Fatima Sana Shaikh and Fazal, a newly married couple whose relationship faces hiccups as one flourishes professionally while the other struggles. Long distance only makes things harder.Their college buddy (Aditya Roy Kapur) uses the rather extreme label of 'toxic love' to summarise their relationship, but this is, in fact, a story which touches on life after settling with your loved one—the hardships, the anxiety, the uncertainty. Confronting it can kill many a relationship, so it's a pity that Basu struggles to fit this sombre take on love amidst the quirk.Lot of that comes via Chumki (Khan) and Parth (Roy Kapur), who have their meet-cute moment after a wasted Chumki ends up in the wrong apartment and finds herself with a travel blogger-theatre actor and coach in Roy Kapur. He's commitment phobic or a 'phattu manchild' in Chumki's words; she's engaged to be married to her colleague.Nothing about the two adds up, but this is the token opposites attract, mysterious love track that has carried many a romcoms. While it starts out with promise, it soon becomes a tedious affair to see the pair dilly-dally, only to have the most contrived what-the-hell endings.advertisementIt's unsurprising then that Metro... In Dino is struck by the curse of the second half. Neena Gupta and Kher, as college sweethearts who reconnect during a reunion, is a plot full of promise but gets turned into a farce with little emotional takeaway. The art of reconciliation and forgiveness becomes an exasperating exercise as characters chase and wait for the epiphany to strike. There's some gyaan on relationship sprinkled in, which reads like an entry out of a Chicken Soup book. 'Shaadi kuch sikhae ya na sikhae, acting karna sikha deti hai (Marriage teaches feigning),' says one character while another talks of the need of adjustment. Another talks of the significance of falling in love with the same person again and again to make it last.Amidst the ensuing half-baked conflict, Basu shows some of his characters live life vicariously albeit fleetingly. But to serve what purpose is the question? In the quest to pack in Pritam's voluminous output, Metro... In Dino turns into a protracted saga whose conclusion is long foreseeable. It doesn't help that logic too has taken a trip, much like many of the characters do. Love certainly has evolved since the first Metro, but in Metro... In Dino, it surprisingly seems dated.advertisementSubscribe to India Today Magazine- EndsTrending Reel

Metro…In Dino: Konkona Sen Sharma breaks silence on comparison between Pankaj Tripathi & Irrfan Khan: 'I don't want to...'
Konkona Sen Sharma has reacted to the comparison between Irrfan and Pankaj and shared that the latter has done 'more than justice' to the character of Monty read more Metro…In Dino, the spiritual sequel of Life In A Metro, released yesterday and opened to rave reviews among fans. While in the first part, the late Irrfan Khan was paired opposite Konkona Sen Sharma, in the recent release, Pankaj Tripathi has played the onscreen husband of the actress. In fact, the makers paid tribute to Irrfan by retaining the same character name, Pankaj, in the sequel, which is now Monty, at Konkona's suggestion. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Now, the actress has reacted to the comparison between Irrfan and Pankaj and shared that the latter has done 'more than justice' to the character of Monty. 'Life In A Metro was 17–18 years ago. That time, Irrfan and I played Shruti and Monty. They were a much younger couple with younger concerns. Now, Pankaj and my characters are different. They are a much older, married couple with kids. They have jobs, EMIs, responsibilities,' Konkona told Livemint. 'They have a good marriage, but now it's becoming a little boring. I feel like it's with so many people… when you are in a marriage, you hope it's forever only. It's a long-term commitment. The nature of the relationship changes. Anurag has tried to explore that because love is not only when a girl and a boy meet. It doesn't end after that. We have seen love as such a vast, complex emotion throughout our lives, in all different forms. Pankaj and I are tackling it at a different juncture,' she added. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Speaking about the comparison of her chemistry with Irrfan and now Tripathi, she shared, 'I don't want to think about it, honestly. Not in my hands at all. For me, there is no such thing because it's a very fresh thing. It's very new. If they were playing the same character or I were playing the same character, then yes… but there are so many new things this time.'

Metro…In Dino Opens To Positive Reviews, Collects Rs 3.35 Crore On Day 1
Metro…In Dino explores modern love and relationships across different age groups and cities, with a focus on themes of commitment, infidelity and second chances in a relationship. Metro…In Dino, the Anurag Basu directorial musical romantic drama anthology that hit the theatres on July 4, opened to positive reviews from fans and critics alike. Despite a favourable word of mouth, the film got a slow start at the box office. According to the film minted Rs 3.35 crore Nett in India on its first day. While the film had a modest turnout in morning and afternoon shows, it picked up a significant pace by evening and night. The Hindi-language drama had an overall occupancy rate of 17.99 per cent on its first day, with night shows leading the way at 31.09 per cent. Evening shows also contributed significantly, allowing the film to finish the day with respectable numbers for a non-action, dialogue-driven ensemble feature. Going by the reviews, Metro…In Dino's collection is likely to grow significantly in the coming days. One of the key reasons for the film's slow start could be its box office clash with the Hollywood action thriller, Jurassic World: Rebirth starring Scarlett Johansson. It collected a whopping Rs 9 crore net in India on Day 1. Produced by Bhushan Kumar and Anurag Basu, the film features an ensemble cast including Aditya Roy Kapur, Sara Ali Khan, Pankaj Tripathi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Ali Fazal, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta and Saswata Chatterjee. The film is a spiritual continuation of Basu's 2007 anthology Life in a… Metro. Eighteen years after the original captivated hearts with its depiction of urban relationships, this new chapter delves once again into the complex emotions of people negotiating love and loneliness in modern city life. Metro In Dino box office collection Day 1: Anurag Basu's musical earns only one-third of Jurassic World Rebirth in India, mints Rs 3.35 cr
Anurag Basu has returned to the big screen with Metro In Dino, a spiritual successor to his acclaimed 2007 film Life in aMetro. Revisiting familiar themes of urban love, heartbreak, and modern relationship struggles, the new ensemble drama brings together an impressive cast including Anupam Kher, Neena Gupta, Pankaj Tripathi, Konkona Sen Sharma, Aditya Roy Kapur, and Sara Ali Khan. However, despite the list of impressive actors, the film had a subdued start at the box office. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, Metro In Dino earned Rs 3.35 crore on its opening day. The overall occupancy on first day stood at 17.99%, with morning shows recording a modest 8.64%. Attendance steadily picked up during the day, with afternoon and evening shows hitting 14.24% and 17.99% respectively, and peaking at 31.09% during the night shows. Surprisingly, major markets like Delhi-NCR and Mumbai lagged, with occupancies at just 19.25% and 19.50%. While the opening day numbers are higher than Basu's earlier film Life in a Metro, which debuted with Rs 87 lakh in 2007 and eventually earned approximately Rs 24 crore globally, Metro In Dino falls well short when compared to some of his more recent work. His last theatrical release, Jagga Jasoos, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif, opened to Rs 8.57 crore, which at the time was itself considered a tepid start. The new film has also underperformed compared to Sara Ali Khan's last theatrical outing Zara Hatke Zara Bachke, which opened at Rs 5.49 crore. Also Read | With Metro… In Dino, Anurag Basu defies box office logic as he makes yet another mad, messy musical Adding to its challenges, Metro… In Dino is facing stiff competition at the box office. Jurassic World Rebirth had a strong debut with Rs 9 crore on its opening day and is expected to maintain momentum. Meanwhile, films from the previous week continue to hold ground: Kajol's Maa earned Rs 1 crore on Day 8, while Brad Pitt's high-octane F1 collected Rs 3.50 crore on its eighth day and remains a popular choice among viewers. Aamir Khan's Sitaare Zameen Par, now in its third week, is also going well as it grossed a staggering Rs 137 crore in wop weeks. With 2025 entering its second half, Metro In Dino marks another lukewarm box office entry in what has been a mixed year for Bollywood. Only Vicky Kaushal's Chhaava has earned blockbuster status so far, grossing Rs 585 crore. Raid 2 trails far behind with Rs 173 crore, while Sitaare Zameen Par is poised to join the list of top performers if it sustains its current pace. Still, the year is shaping up to be another blend of fewer hits and more misses. Metro In Dino does have a few things working in its favour: an already popular soundtrack and relatively positive word-of-mouth. But its true test lies ahead. As per a report by Pinkvilla, the film was made on a budget of Rs 100 crore, Rs 85 crore for production and Rs 15 crore for advertising. Given its underwhelming start, Metro In Dino will need a strong weekend and sustained weekday momentum to recover its costs and make a meaningful impact at the box office.
