Provincial pairs champions crowned amid challenging conditions
Last Sunday marked the conclusion of sectional play and the beginning of playoffs in the KZN Men's and Women's Pairs Bowling Championship, with 190 pairs teams representing districts from across KwaZulu-Natal.
Hosted by the Kingfisher Bowling Association, the event coincided with turbulent weather conditions as a cut-off low weather system disrupted much of the province — echoing the chaos of the 2024 KZN Singles finals when storms similarly interrupted play.
Despite the adverse conditions, the championship pressed on with spirited competition.
In the men's final, the host club's pair Clinton Knott and Louw Vermeulen faced off against Wayne Roberts and Roger Boulle of Port Natal Bowls (Aero Bowls South Africa). The match began competitively; with the PNB pair taking an early 6–3 lead after four ends.
From there, Roberts and Boulle dominated, adding 16 shots over the next 12 ends while Knott and Vermeulen managed only three.
After 16 of the scheduled 18 ends, with the score well in hand, the Kingfisher team conceded the match, awarding Roberts and Boulle the 2025 men's title.
Ken Fann and Lance Mansfield from Westville Bowling Club picked up a playoff win to secure the bronze medal.

But Firwood Bowling Club in Queensburgh is changing that narrative in all the right ways. Led by the forward-thinking Alta Joubert, the chief steward and events coordinator, Firwood is proving that bowls can be social, competitive and a whole lot of fun. With clubs worldwide struggling to grow and retain membership, Firwood's strategy is refreshingly simple: make time at the club memorable. Their inaugural Christmas in July tournament did just that. The greens were full well ahead of the entry deadline, a sign of the club's growing appeal. Big names from Port Natal Bowls turned up, ready to battle for bragging rights and generous prizes. Roger and Samm Boulle donated a popular Aero and Grippo hamper, won by a delighted John Connellan. Arnold Muscat kept the crowd buzzing with a slick team auction, while Kyle Venter and Chris Strover live-streamed the action. A cheeky R50 one-bowl challenge added an extra competitive twist, with the winner walking away with the pot. When the toucher marks settled, Duncan Buckthorpe and Kim and Lorinne Hawkins from Queensburgh BC walked away R6000 richer, proving that local talent runs deep. Hillary's Marc Rogers, Brett Burger and Warren van der Sloot grabbed second, while Craig Worst and his Hillcrest lads clinched third place. Firwood has shown what's possible when passion and community come together. Other clubs would do well to take a page from their playbook. While the Christmas tinsel may be packed away, the league action remains red hot. In the men's first division, Westville BC retained their lead by squeezing out 22,5 of a possible 34 points against Parkhill and Northlands. But Parkhill weren't going to be left behind—after a fruitful weekend clash with Westville and Amanzimtoti, they banked 23,5 points, leapfrogging Umhlali CC and trailing the log leaders by a mere 1,5 points. With another double-header ahead more drama is on offer, Westville hits the road twice to take on Hillary and Hillcrest, while Parkhill will travel to Umhlali and then host Stella Park on Sunday. In a skins race like this, every end counts. In the women's A division, debutants Mount Edgecombe stole the spotlight by beating early leaders Stella Park 10–2, jumping to the top of the log. Hillary's win over Umhlali lifted them to second, while Stella Park dropped to fourth. This week sees the ladies travel to Umhlali CC where Mount Edgecombe face Hillcrest and Hillary take on Stella Park in what could be a pivotal round.

Roberts to represent SA in the World Cup in Malaysia
The buzz in Port Natal bowls circles this week is the thrilling news that Hillcrest Bowling Club's Wayne Roberts has been selected to represent South Africa in the inaugural World Bowls World Cup, to be held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, from November 4 to 8. This premier tournament is designed as a preparation event for the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games and has generated great anticipation across the world bowls community. The World Cup, a platinum event on the World Bowls Series calendar, will be hosted at the prestigious Bukit Kiara National Lawn Bowl Centre—a world-class venue that staged the lawn bowls competition during the 1998 Commonwealth Games. A total of twelve nations will participate, including the host country Malaysia and the top 11 countries from the 2023 World Championships. The format is as elite as it is inclusive: six-person teams comprising two Open Women, two Open Men and two Para athletes (one male and one female), competing across seven events including singles and pairs in each section. Roberts' selection is well-earned. In November 2024, he donned the green and gold at the World Champion of Champions tournament at Brown's Bay Bowling Club in Auckland, New Zealand and earlier this year, he secured the Fairtree PBA Singles title. In Malaysia, he will compete in the open men's singles and pair up with Jason Evans (Johannesburg Bowling Association) in the men's pairs. The full team is a blend of experience and talent: Evans and Roberts in the Open Men's division, Anneke Scheepers (Western Province) and Bridget Herselman (Sables) in the Open Ladies' division, and Jared James (Ekurhuleni) and Margie Palmer (Western Province) representing the physically disabled category. Susan Nel of Amanzimtoti Bowling Club will coach the ladies' squad and accompany the team when they depart on October 31 to allow for practice and acclimatisation on indoor greens. Roberts is seen as a shining inspiration for young bowlers across South Africa. His dedication, work ethic and composure on the green are widely admired. Within the Port Natal bowling community, his selection has been met with pride and high expectations. Port Natal League action heats up Meanwhile, on the local scene, the Port Natal Inter-Club leagues kicked off on Saturday 5 July. In the Men's A Division, Westville BC bagged 15 out of 17 points in a convincing win over Amanzimtoti BC, and Umhlali CC matched that score against Stella Park BC. Thanks to a slightly superior shot difference, Westville tops the league table. This weekend promises a gripping double-header: on Saturday, Westville travel to Parkhill BC, who currently sit third, while on Sunday they host Northlands BC. Umhlali, sitting in second, face Hillary BC on Saturday and Hillcrest BC—keen to upset the log leaders—on Sunday. In the Ladies A Division, Stella Park claimed 10 out of 12 points in their clash against Umhlali, placing them firmly at the top. All first division clubs head to Mount Edgecombe on Saturday, where Stella Park will take on the hosts in another key showdown.

Local runners go the distance at Comrades The Heidelberg Athletics Club recently celebrated a strong performance at the 2025 Comrades Marathon, made possible in part by sponsorship from Vopak. The support helped ensure the club's athletes could compete in the prestigious ultra-marathon without added financial strain. Although the runners had already paid for registration and accommodation, the club approached Vopak earlier this year for more help. Vopak responded by covering the team's transportation costs and providing a branded gazebo for use at the event. This gesture, aimed at encouraging athletic excellence and community involvement, was welcomed by the athletes and the club officials.
