Vijayawada: In the absence of foot over bridges (FoBs), citizens crisscrossing roads at the busiest intersections risk their lives, which has become a common sight in the city. Concerned about their safety, residents continue to demand the govt promptly construct sufficient numbers of FoBs, a long-pending demand that remains unaddressed. While residents say there is a need for a FoB at nearly every traffic junction, Vijayawada city currently has just one operational FoB opposite the Old Eenadu office on MG Road, situated strategically between Benz Circle and NTR Circle Junctions, two key junctions in the city.
"The FoB opposite the Eenadu office serves little purpose as it is mostly used by political parties for displaying flex banners and publicity materials, while intermediate students use it during morning and evening hours. On the other hand, Benz Circle, which is just 200 metres away and where thousands of people jaywalk daily, putting their lives at risk, is bereft of a FoB despite demands from the public to construct one," secretary of taxpayers association in Vijayawada, MV Anjaneyulu, told TOI."Before anything else, Vijayawada, as a city, first requires better footpaths that allow pedestrians to safely walk on the roads. Secondly, the city immediately requires FoBs at crucial junctions such as Benz Circle, Ramavarappadu Ring, Chuttugunta, Besant Road, RTC bus stand area, and Police Control Room junction."While the city earlier had two FoBs, one at the Eenadu office and another at PWD Grounds, the FoB at PWD Grounds was demolished to facilitate the construction of Dr BR Ambedkar Statue at Ambedkar Smriti Vanam Park, developed at the grounds by the previous state govt.A senior Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) official told TOI: "The municipal corporation readied a proposal to construct FoBs at Benz Circle, PCR Junction, Chutti Nagar, and a subway at KR Market area. However, the proposals didn't materialise due to unknown reasons.""I travel daily from Balaji Nagar to Patamata, and I take share autos from Varadhi Junction to Benz Circle Junction to Patamata for commuting daily to my workplace and vice versa. During my commute, I have to cross national highway roads at Varadhi and Benz Circle, making pedestrian safety dubious," says Nagamani, a resident of Balaji Nagar.

Belagavi's British-era buildings to retain heritage value

1 2 Belagavi: In a move to preserve the city's colonial-era architectural heritage, the Belagavi district administration has decided to retain and restore the historic deputy commissioner's (DC) office and the regional commissioner's (RC) office buildings, constructed by the British in 1910. Both structures, built in the distinctive Indo-Gothic style, will now be repurposed for public use. The Indo-Gothic architectural style, which gained prominence in British India during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, is a blend of European Gothic Revival elements blended with Indian, Islamic, and Hindu architectural features. Typically reserved for prestigious public buildings such as courts, universities, railway stations, and govt offices, this style is notable for its intricate detailing and imposing structure. Originally, the district administration proposed demolishing both heritage buildings to make way for a new DC's office complex. The state govt allocated Rs 50 crore in the budget for the first phase of the project, wherein the offices of the various govt departments will be housed under a single roof. However, the plan sparked strong objections from historians and heritage activists, prompting a reassessment. Responding to their concerns, the administration reversed its decision. "We decided to retain both buildings in their original form and restore them using the same materials. Once the new DC's office complex is completed, the heritage buildings will be opened for public use," said deputy commissioner Mohammad Roshan, speaking to the TOI. DC's office building will be converted into a library, while the RC's office building will house a museum and exhibition space. "The aim is to preserve Belagavi's rich historical legacy and make it accessible to future generations," Roshan added. As per archival records, both buildings date back to 1910. "We have original documents and layouts from the record room. Though the buildings appear to be tiled, they are actually constructed using Indore-based basalt stone, a fine-grained igneous rock known for its strength and durability. We will be using the same stone for the restoration, with expert architects leading the work," Roshan said. Belagavi DC's office building was inaugurated during the tenure of British officer BA Brandon in 1910. It underwent partial renovation in 2007 under the then DC Shalini Rajneesh. The three-storey structure comprises 30 rooms and two meeting halls. Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Friendship Day wishes , messages and quotes !

RSS leader for probe to find ‘real culprits' of Malegaon blast

1 2 3 Nagpur: Now, as all the accused in Malegaon blast have been acquitted, it is on the govt's probe agencies to investigate the truth and find out the real perpetrators, said national executive member of RSS, Suresh (Bhaiyyaji) Joshi, on Sunday. Joshi, former Sarkaryavaha (genereal secretary) of RSS, spoke with TOI on the sidelines of a function organised by Dharampeth Education Society. "It's a fact that the blast took place. So, an investigation has to take place to know who did it." Replying to a question, he confirmed that the acquitted persons were framed as part of a conspiracy. "Such conspiracies are not new, but it was finally proven by the court's verdict acquitting the accused," he said. While refusing to comment on recent allegations of accused being forced to name RSS leaders in the blast, Joshi said those who have made the statements may be speaking out of experience. The Society held a function to confer awards on Vansavi Seva Samiti and Kasturi Sanstha. The former, which is active in the Jamod Tehsil of Buldhana district, received the award for preventing religious conversions and bringing back tribals to the Hindu faith apart from other work. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Resmed AirSense 11 with flat 20% off ResMed Buy Now Undo Joshi said conversion is a deep-rooted problem in the country. "However, the RSS welcomes the recent proposal by the Kerala Council of Churches which has stood against forcible conversion. It is indeed encouraging to find some Christian bodies rising against conversion. The Sangh has been working on Ghar Wapsi to bring people back to their original faith. The efforts on preventing conversion are going well too," he said. Joshi said that neglect by a segment of society is also a driving force towards a change of faith, apart from poverty and lack of education. Earlier, a member of the Dharampeth Education Society, Kumarmukund Shastri, lauded the work by Vansavi Seva Samiti. Ganesh Nathani of the Seva Samiti said widespread conversions were happening among the tribals in the Jamod area for the last 40 years. "With Samiti's efforts, as many as 95% of the persons have come back to the Hindu faith," he said. "They were lured by offering healthcare and other help. However, another group silently worked on changing the tribals' food habits by even making them habitual to eating beef," Nathani told TOI. EC: Voter ID flagged by Tejashwi 'unauthorised'

Tejashwi Yadav NEW DELHI: A day after top RJD functionary Tejashwi Prasad Yadav claimed that a search of Bihar's draft electoral roll with his EPIC No. RAB2916120 had found his name missing, only to be "fact-checked" by the Election Commission that his name and actual EPIC No. RAB0456228 were very much included in the voter list, the poll panel on Sunday said it had failed to find any EPIC No. RAB2916120 issued by its authorised officers in its records. On Sunday, the electoral registration officer (ERO) concerned wrote to Tejashwi, saying that upon preliminary investigation, it appears that EPIC No. RAB2916120 flashed by him at a press conference in Patna on Saturday was not officially issued. The ERO asked the RJD scion to share the the EPIC card he cited at the press conference in original for a "thorough investigation". If found to be fake, there may be legal consequences, including an FIR. Sources told TOI that Tejashwi has been using EPIC No. RAB0456228 issued to him on March 18, 2014, which also appears in the latest draft electoral roll. It was this valid EPIC No. that he cited in his nomination papers/affidavit filed during the 2015 and 2020 assembly polls in Bihar. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Montenegro: New Container Houses (Prices May Surprise You) Container House | Search ads Search Now Undo 'EPIC cited by Tejashwi not used in 10 yrs' EPIC No. RAB2916120, which Tejashwi Yadav cited as 'missing' on Saturday, has not been used by him, at least for the past 10 years, said an EC source. In another case, EC has found that CPI(ML) Liberation MP Sudama Prasad's wife Shobha Devi was registered as an elector from two different assembly constituencies (ACs) in Arrah, Bihar. The Left party is one of petitioners in the special intensive revision (SIR) case being heard by Supreme Court. Devi, as per documents seen by TOI, was registered with EPIC No. RGX3264140 at Lavarish Seva Kendra polling station in Arrah AC and under EPIC No. WVA0308544 at Samudayik Bhawan polling station in Agiaon AC. Her age cited in the two documents is several years apart. A check run by the ERO had found that both EPIC cards were indeed issued to the same person but her name was struck off the roll in one of the two places during as part of the SIR exercise.
