Shamrock Rovers already have one hand on title

RTÉ News17-06-2025

While the League of Ireland season is only just past halfway, Richie Towell reckons the SSE Airtricity Men's Premier Division title race is already showing signs of being done and dusted.
His former club Shamrock Rovers earned back-to-back wins over reigning champions Shelbourne and Drogheda United over the past few days and sit nine points clear of bitter rivals Bohemians, who albeit do have two games in hand.
Speaking on the RTÉ Soccer Podcast, ex-Dundalk and Hoops midfielder Towell said Rovers are showing real signs of building up a head of steam while most of their erstwhile rivals are struggling to find momentum.
"I think at the moment they're in cruise control. They're absolutely cruising it," he said.
"To be honest, I said it a couple of weeks ago that they were my favourites to win it. But I think they have one hand on it already.
"And not just based on how good they are. I don't think any other team is good enough to catch them.
"You have Bohemians who are the closest to them and they have a couple of games in hand. Maybe they can put up a small bit of a title challenge.
"But for the rest of them, you see Shels, you see Pat's, I don't think any of them have the quality or the confidence to go on a proper run and try and challenge Shamrock Rovers.
"You see the depth in the squad. I even know some lads can't get into the squad that would walk into probably any other team in the league which is absolutely crazy, so Shamrock Rovers are in absolute cruise control at the moment."
The mood within Stephen Bradley's squad may be positive but that's a contrast to Drogheda United.
Although that is in no way related to on-pitch matters, with Kevin Doherty's team putting up a good fight on Monday night on the way to losing 2-1 at Sullivan and Lambe Park and currently sit in the top half of the table.
It's more related to the blow of being excluded from the UEFA Conference League due to multi-club ownership rules, with the verdict in their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport being announced hours before kick off on Monday.
Both Towell and ex-Drogheda and Republic of Ireland winger Keith Treacy sympathised with Doherty and his players on the podcast, with Towell highlighting how dreams of a European dalliance were dashed for personnel who might not be guaranteed to get that opportunity again.
"This is some boys' livelihoods. There's potential earnings there for lads in European games that they would never get the opportunity to earn playing in the League of Ireland. That's after being taken away from them," he said.
"Subconsciously, (players) are going to be thinking when the draw is made today, when the games are on in July, 'we should be out there', and all of a sudden they've no (European) games.
"They have two decisions to make now, Drogheda's players do. They either say 'it's going to hinder our performance and let it get our heads down', or else they can say, 'Let's use this to our advantage. We're going to be fresh, we're not going to have any games, let's rest, recuperate and be ready to attack the league.'"

'A visionary' - Éamonn Fitzmaurice and Lee Keegan laud Dessie Farrell

Former Kerry boss Éamonn Fitzmaurice and ex-Mayo star Lee Keegan have heaped praise on Dessie Farrell after his time as Dublin manager came to an end at the weekend. Farrell stepped down in the wake of the seven-point All-Ireland SFC quarter-final defeat to Tyrone. Having won the Sam Maguire as a player in 1995, he took over the reins from Jim Gavin in January 2020, leading the Dubs to All-Ireland glory the following winter, before repeating the trick in 2023. Speaking on the RTÉ GAA podcast, Fitzmaurice described the Na Fianna man as "a visionary", highlighting not just his work with Dublin but also his key role in the early days of the GPA. "He's just such an unassuming gentleman as well, there's no nonsense about him," said Fitzmaurice. "I think always the ultimate sign is how players feel about their manager. "You could see after they won the All-Ireland in 2023, I remember James McCarthy did an interview. I'd say it might have even been out on the pitch straight after the game, where he really outlined how much they were going after this for Dessie because of some of the flak he had taken after the defeat to Kerry in 2022. "He won All-Irelands as a player and a manager, he won All-Irelands at minor, Under-21, senior. "His whole body of work with the GPA. To bring the GPA from where they were, these kind of renegades on the outside trying to do something unprecedented, he was a visionary... that was incredible for him to be so central in that. "He deserves massive credit." Keegan said a lot of the criticism Farrell has endured over the last five years was "shortsighted", highlighting his record at delivering success and nurturing elite footballers. "He still took two All-Irelands. People are a bit shortsighted sometimes... I still think Dessie did a great job. Leinster is probably as open as it's ever going to be. For the next few years you'll probably have multiple different winners. "But for the Dublin, yeah it's definitely a transitional period for them. I still think Dessie worked a lot of good stuff there with that group. "I also have to pay homage to him in a good and bad way because he definitely clipped our wings. He brought a lot of those 13-year-olds, now generational players, to be the greatest players that ever graced the pitch. He nurtured them into the players they are today, which cost (Mayo) dearly but you could see the job he's done with them.

UEFA postpones decision on Crystal Palace's European place

UEFA HAS POSTPONED a decision on whether or not to admit Crystal Palace into next season's Europa League. Palace thought they had secured a place in Europe's second-tier club competition thanks to their FA Cup final win over Manchester City in May but uncertainty arose as to whether they would be allowed to enter due to Uefa's multi-club ownership rules. Outgoing Palace shareholder John Textor has an interest in French club Lyon, who qualified for the same competition. Uefa announced on Monday it needed more time to make a ruling and said Lyon had reached a settlement which would exclude them from European competition next season if a decision to relegate them to the French second tier was upheld. That relegation is the subject of an appeal by the French club. Earlier this month, the Court of Arbitration for Sport upheld the decision by Uefa to expel League of Ireland side Drogheda United from the Conference League as their US owners, Trivela Group, also had a majority share in Danish cup winners Silkeborg IFK. Advertisement Lyon were relegated due to financial difficulties by French football's financial regulator, the DNCG. Last week it was announced Textor had agreed to sell his shareholding in Palace to New York Jets owner Woody Johnson. It was announced on Monday he had resigned from his leadership positions at Lyon as well. Whether any of that assists Palace's chances remains to be seen. Palace's case has been examined under article five of Uefa's club competition regulations, which state that as of 1 March this year, clubs wishing to be eligible for qualification in 2025-26 had to be able to demonstrate that no individual or legal entity had control or influence over more than one club participating in the same competition. Where two or more clubs fail to meet the criteria, only one can be entered, with Lyon's better league position appearing to put them ahead of Palace. Lyon said in a statement the settlement agreement they had signed with UEFA's club financial and control body (CFCB) meant the club 'could therefore participate in next season's Europa League, subject to a favourable outcome of the appeal of the DNCG decision'. That would indicate Lyon's participation hinges on the success of their appeal, but what is unclear is whether UEFA might admit Palace as well if it is satisfied requirements have been met under multi-club ownership rules – or only admit Palace if Lyon's relegation is upheld. Palace have been contacted for comment.
