
From fraud and bankruptcy to personal nuclear reactors, the unlikely rebirth of Enron
Connor Gaydos, the new leader of Enron – the American company that was rocked by the discovery of widespread fraud, leading it to file for bankruptcy – was flanked by the company's famed tilted E logo as he reflected stoically on the past.
"This company has a legendary history and some of it is good and some of it is bad," he said in a Zoom call attended by hundreds.
"That's fine, Enron's name has always carried weight, and we don't run from that – we embrace it."
Some view it as parody, others as performance art. Whatever it is, Mr Gaydos now owns the Texas-based company that had about 20,000 employees and more than $47 billion in assets before it collapsed.
The company primarily focused on electricity and natural gas, as well as trading in energy and physical commodities. It also offered financial and risk management services to other businesses.
An archived version of Enron's website claimed more than $100 billion in revenue as of 2000.
But whistle-blowers revealed rampant fraud, much of it in the form of egregious accounting methods, which destroyed the company and brought an end to a boom rooted in economic and energy deregulation starting in the mid 1990s.
As a result of the crisis, Enron's former chief executive, Jeffrey Skilling, served more than a decade in prison. The company's founder and former chairman, Kenneth Lay, probably would have been jailed had he not died before his sentencing. The company's former chief financial officer, Andrew Fastow, also served a prison sentence.
Enron was at the heart of one of the biggest US corporate scandals of all time. It now serves as a cautionary tale for companies, investors and consumers.
"Enron was always something that I had thought about since I was a child," Mr Gaydos told The National, days after Enron's earnings call.
The 29-year-old, originally from Arkansas, reflected on the tainted company's happier and more prosperous days, describing it as the "OpenAI or Nvidia of the mid 1990s".
He explained that his decision to restart the notorious company stemmed from viewing a documentary about its fall from grace. He looked up the Enron logo in the US trademark database and noticed that ownership of the symbol – by graphic designer Paul Rand, who also created the logos for IBM, Westinghouse, UPS and ABC – had expired.
Mr Gaydos hired a lawyer who helped with the trademark acquisition paperwork. For a few hundred dollars, including legal fees, he became the owner of the Enron brand. "It cost me what I think the price of cup of coffee will cost in a few years," he joked, referring to inflation.
In late 2024, Enron announced its comeback through accounts on Instagram, X and TikTok – which did not exist when the company went under in 2001. Now, Enron has about 500,000 followers on those social platforms.
"We're here to lead by example...we are Enron," a promotional video for the company said.
Since that video came out, Mr Gaydos has done several interviews and the company has heavily promoted a fanciful product it calls the Enron Egg, which it describes as a personal nuclear reactor"made to power your home for up to 10 years".
Several people purporting to be board members and high-level staff members took part in the recent earnings call. "I've got 60 people on the payroll right now," Mr Gaydos said.
The company also recently promoted a 2025 summer internship programme and a commitment to corporate diversity.
Although it is his first time leading a prominent brand, it is not the first time Mr Gaydos has been in the spotlight. He is one of the creators of Birds Aren't Real, the viral, performance art conspiracy theory designed as a critique of the abundance of misinformation pumped out on social media.
Mr Gaydos said the main thrust of the project was to show how the internet had been used as a tool to divide people. With the Enron endeavour, however, he wants to do something different.
'I want to unite people using the toolbox that we used with Birds Aren't Real, but do it in a way that can hopefully shine a light on some of the areas that deserve to be exposed with the energy business,' he explained.
Mr Gaydos said in the two decades since Enron's financial implosion, energy business consolidation, government subsidies and policies that lack environmental awareness have run amok. Consumers have suffered while energy profits have soared, he added.
He said his version of Enron was in the process seeking approval to become a retail energy provider. The Enron brand owner said that, in Texas, 10 'legacy monopoly companies' supply energy to about 60 per cent of the population.
Mr Gaydos accused those companies of vague pricing and outsourcing customer service to artificial intelligence. Without going into specifics, Mr Gaydos said Enron wanted to present Texas residents with a straightforward and economical path to provide energy to their homes or businesses.
'The energy monopoly in this country has got so out of hand,' he said, before changing to a more optimistic tone, adding that his goal is to bring back Enron and create a new company that will revolutionise energy. 'If there's a few jokes along the way, and if some people laugh along the way, so be it."
Speaking with Mr Gaydos, it is sometimes difficult to tell what is real and what is parody.
One of the project's staff members who co-ordinated the interview insisted the push to become a retail energy provider was real. "Stay tuned," they said. "Enron has a lot of interesting stuff coming down the pike."

The Trump Administration is showing no sign that it will lessen its criticism of Federal Reserve chairman Jerome Powell, with Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick saying that the Fed chairman was torturing the US. On CBS Face the Nation, Mr Lutnick echoed US President Donald Trump's sharp tone when talking about the Federal Reserve chairman, saying that he was doing the 'worst job', among other things. 'I don't know why he's torturing America this way,' he said, referring to Mr Powell's decision to not cut interest rates. CBS anchor Margaret Brennan pointed out to Mr Lutnick that Mr Powell does not unilaterally set the interest rates, but rather, a committee consisting of federal governors and the heads of central bank offices throughout the US. Later in the show, Democratic Congressman Jim Himes condemned Mr Lutnick for his choice of words. 'He said, 'Jay Powell is torturing the American people',' lamented Mr Himes, saying that Mr Lutnick was putting Mr Powell's physical safety at risk. 'What you just saw was a masterclass by a huckster and a con man who uses words like torture that are very, very dangerous words,' he continued. Mr Lutnick's decision to use words like 'torture' when referring to the US Federal Reserve chairman are the latest in a series of condemnations of Mr Powell from the Trump White House. It also comes after Mr Trump's own comments on Tuesday, when he denied reports that he intends to fire Mr Powell, a move that is largely unprecedented and would likely rock the markets. 'I talked about the concept of firing him. I said, 'what do you think?' Almost every one of them said I should, but I'm more conservative,' he said before a meeting with Bahrain's Crown Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa. Donald Trump claims rising popularity despite criticism over Epstein files
US President Donald Trump has used his social media platform to vent about the mounting pressure and criticism relating to his recent decisions concerning files about Jeffrey Epstein. Polling shows dissatisfaction with Mr Trump's latest attempts to address the Epstein controversy. According to CBS News, President Trump's approval rating is now hovering at 42 per cent, down from 53 per cent in February. Making matters more problematic for the White House are polls showing that Mr Trump 's numbers waning on the economy, overall job approval and even immigration, once a stronghold for the President. "My poll numbers within the Republican Party and Maga [the Make America Great Again movement] have gone up, significantly, since the Jeffrey Epstein hoax was exposed by the radical left Democrats and, just plain 'troublemakers,'" he posted on Truth Social, his social media platform. He insisted that his poll numbers have hit "90, 92, 93, and 95 per cent," adding that those numbers were "Republican Party records", though he didn't specify to which polls he was referring. There has been a wave of criticism since the White House insisted there was no reason to release documents concerning Mr Epstein, who was arrested in 2019 on charges of solicitation of prostitution, among other allegations. The disgraced financier died in prison awaiting trial in 2019. His death fuelled conspiracy theories, particularly among the Maga movement, that Epstein was murdered to conceal the wealthy and powerful friends implicated in his crimes. Mr Trump tried to turn the tide of public opinion by asking US Attorney General Pam Bondi to request a federal court to unseal Epstein's grand jury transcripts. On Saturday, Mr Trump posted on Truth Social: "Even if the court gave its full and unwavering approval, nothing will be good enough for the troublemakers and radical left lunatics making the request," he wrote. "It will always be more, more, more. Maga!" During an appearance on CNN's State of the Union on Sunday, Republican Congressman Tim Burchett, who has previously pushed for the release of all files related to Mr Epstein, said President Trump's move unseal some of the transcripts was "a good start." President Trump's recent request, however, falls short of Mr Burchett's recent push to release more files related to Epstein. An amendment has been introduced in the House of Representatives to disclose many of the Epstein files and at least 10 Republicans have signed a petition in support of that. Democratic Senator Amy Klobuchar told CNN's State of the Union she remained sceptical of Mr Trump's recent decision to try to convince a judge to unseal some of the Epstein transcripts. "They promised that these documents would be out there," she said. They gave people binders that said 'Part One' and now suddenly, with the whistleblower reporting that 100,000 documents were reviewed by the FBI to look for the President's name, they suddenly pulled back and said, 'No, we're not releasing them,'" she added, insisting that President Trump had backtracked on previous promises he made about the Epstein documents. The controversy surrounding the US President and Epstein shows no sign of going away, especially with a decision from Mr Trump to sue The Wall Street Journal. That litigation stems from a story published on Thursday about an alleged letter that Mr Trump wrote to Mr Epstein. The newspaper said the message was part of an album of letters from friends collected for Epstein's 50th birthday in 2003. Mr Trump has repeatedly described The Wall Street Journal 's reporting as "false and defamatory". The newspaper has stood by the story. The President's libel lawsuit against the publication is pursuing at least $20 billion. For several days now, it has been among the most read stories on The Wall Street Journal's website. Back in June, during his falling out with a the one-time staunch supporter and Tesla tycoon, Elon Musk posted on X that Mr Trump had a major presence in the Epstein files.

UAE: Crypto scam victims on average lost nearly Dh300,000 each
Approximately $80,000 (Dh293,600) was stolen from each crypto victim of the UAE, the highest globally, during the first half of 2025, according to an analysis by Chainalysis. This has prompted analysts to call for using best techniques to store cryptocurrencies efficiently. According to EC-Council University, investors in UAE and around the world should choose the right wallet as a first step to safeguard their crypto. In addition, they are advised that hardware wallets are the best option, while a paper wallet is an offline solution for securely storing cryptocurrency. It involves generating a document that contains the investor's public and private keys. They also advised strengthening passwords, implementing two-factor authentication, being aware of phishing scams, keeping software updated, safeguarding private keys, backing up the wallet, diversifying the storage and securing the network, among others. According to a global blockchain analytics company's data, victims in the USA came second, followed by victims in Chile, India, Lithuania, Japan, Iran, Israel, Norway and Germany. The UAE has one of the highest crypto adoptions in the world. Nearly 30 per cent of UAE residents own cryptocurrency, followed by Vietnam, the US, Iran, the Philippines, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Singapore and Ukraine, according to data published by Voronoi, quoting Trip-A. With a score of 45.7 (regarding interest of residents in crypto), the UAE has been ranked third globally after Singapore (50.2) and Switzerland (46.9), said Henley and Partners. 'The UAE stands out as a leading jurisdiction for crypto investors, with its strong public adoption score evidencing a vibrant interest in the crypto ecosystem. The Middle Eastern powerhouse also offers favourable tax policies and a high level of economic stability,' it said. Andrew Amoils, head of research at New World Wealth, said Dubai is home to 6,500 technology millionaires as of June 2024, mainly in fintech, crypto and software development. This comes as Bitcoin hit an all-time high of over $120,000 earlier this week. On Sunday morning, it was trading at $117,860, while total market capitalisation stood at $3.87 trillion. Globally, Chainalysis said over $2.17 billion was stolen from cryptocurrency services so far in 2025, higher than the entirety of 2024. North Korea's $1.5 billion hack of ByBit, the largest single hack in crypto history, accounted for the majority of service losses. Regionally, Eastern Europe, the Middle East and North Africa (Mena), and Central & Southern Asia and Oceania (CSAO) regions saw the most rapid increase in growth in victim totals. North America dominated both bitcoin and altcoin theft, ranking first in both categories. This concentration likely reflects the region's high crypto adoption rates and the operation of threat actors capable of targeting large individual holdings. Europe leads the world in ether and stablecoin theft, potentially indicating some combination of either adoption rates for these assets or an attacker's preference for more liquid, easily transferable assets. Asia Pacific ranked second in terms of total Bitcoin stolen and third in terms of stolen Ethereum, whereas CSAO ranked second in terms of stolen altcoin and stolen stablecoin value. Fairly consistently, Sub-Saharan Africa ranked the lowest in terms of value stolen (second to last in terms of compromised BTC), which is most likely indicative of lower wealth levels in this region and not necessarily a signal of lower victimisation rates among crypto users.
