Ahead of Saturday's Speedway Classic between the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds at Bristol Motor Speedway, the star-studded MLB on FOX desk picked their winners for the trade deadline. A-Rod's winners: Phillies, Mets and Mariners
I really like what the Phillies did with solidifying their closer. The Mariners picked up a nice piece with Eugenio Suarez at third base, they may have two guys that can hit home runs this year. I really like what the Mets did in the back side of their bullpen. Big Papi's winner: Mariners
What Seattle did getting Suarez and getting their third baseman, it was such a big move. They had the pitching, they went for a closer, they're in better shape right now, and I wouldn't be surprised if they face some really good times in the playoffs." Jeter's winners: Padres and Yankees
I tell you what, don't forget about the San Diego Padres. You talk about a team that's really just revamped itself at the trade deadline. What they've done has been pretty impressive. Their games now, you can jokingly say, that they want the lead after 3 so that they can turn it over to their bullpen. I think the Yankees, as well. I think they would have liked to add a starter but there wasn't too many starters out there, I guess, to be had.

Tim McGraw thrills crowd before MLB Speedway Classic
MLB tried something new, sort of new. The Atlanta Braves and the Cincinnati Reds were supposed to play a baseball game on a field inside Bristol Motor Speedway. Problem is that the weather didn't cooperate and it rained and rained until after two hours play was suspended with the Reds leading 1-0 in the bottom of the first. The game will be picked up on Sunday afternoon. The idea riffs off something college football has done but weather isn't usually a problem for that sport. What did take place was a pregame concert featuring Tim McGraw. That went off without a hitch. No word on whether the Speedway Classic will be renamed Field of Streams. White Sox INF Miguel Vargas sidelined by a left oblique strain
ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — White Sox infielder Miguel Vargas was scratched from Saturday night's game at the Los Angeles Angels because of a left oblique strain. Vargas was replaced at first base by Lenyn Sosa. The White Sox said Vargas is being further evaluated. Vargas, 25, was acquired from the Dodgers as part of a three-team trade in July 2024. He is batting .229 with 13 homers and 44 RBIs in 106 games. Prior to the matchup with the Angels, the White Sox placed right-hander Dan Altavilla on the 15-day injured list with a right lat strain. Right-hander Owen White was recalled from Triple-A Charlotte. The team also announced that first baseman Ryan Noda was claimed off waivers by Baltimore. The 32-year-old Altavilla is 0-1 with a 2.36 ERA and two saves in 25 games with Chicago this year. ___ AP MLB:
