Maldives Unveils New Terminal At Velana Airport, Eyes Expansion With Hanimadhoo Project

Maldives tourism gets a new gateway as the new terminal at Velana International Airport is inaugurated on the occasion of the the country's Independence Day.
In a grand ceremony held in Malé, the Maldives inaugurated the new terminal at Velana International Airport. This long-awaited project is expected to boost the country's tourism industry. The new terminal increases the Maldives' capacity to handle 7.5 million passengers per year.
Maldives' President Mohamed Muizzu, inaugurated the terminal and thanked development partners such as Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the UAE, and OPEC for their assistance.
Speaking to CNN-News18, Md. Lamman, Deputy Manager at Maldives Airports Company Limited, said, 'There are three main new technologies that have come to this terminal. Passenger Boarding Bridges, automatic visuals talking systems, full automated baggage handling systems and also with this all the check-in systems and self checking systems."
'That is why we call it enhanced facilities. Here we can handle 20,000-25000 passengers everyday," he added.
CNN-News18 also spoke to Abdulla Ghiyas on the occasion. He said, 'Tourism is the lifeline of the Maldives. Velana International Airport is the gateway to the country. Last year, we broke the 2 million mark. This new terminal will help us double that. We needed this to take our growth in tourism to the next level. It will act as a catalyst to reach our future goals."
The terminal spans 72,000 square metres and includes 12 passenger boarding bridges, a state-of-the-art baggage handling system, and automated transport and sorting of checked luggage.
In terms of passenger facilities, it features 47 traditional check-in counters, 6 self-service kiosks, 1 counter for oversized baggage, and 24 dedicated check-in counters for seaplane passengers. The airport also has 20 departure immigration counters and 28 arrival immigration counters.
The Maldives is focusing on airport development. It currently has 20 airports, both small and large. The next major project is Hanimadhoo Airport, which is nearly complete and expected to launch by the end of this year. India is assisting with the development of Hanimadhoo Airport.
Nursing Janah, speaking to CNN-News18 at the launch of the new terminal, said, 'This is something we are working on. We are also developing Hanimadhoo Airport as a different product."
The first flight to land at the new terminal was a Maldivian Airlines flight from Cochin. It was welcomed with a water salute by the airport authorities.
The grand ceremony in Malé was followed by a spectacular fireworks display in the Maldivian skies.

Houston, Aug 2 (PTI) The Consulate General of India in Houston has announced the launch of a new Indian Consular Application Centre (ICAC) in Dallas, Texas, bringing essential consular services closer to thousands of Indian-origin residents in the Dallas-Fort Worth region. The new centre, located at 8360 Lyndon B Johnson Freeway, Suite A-230, was virtually inaugurated by India's Ambassador to the United States Vinay Kwatra. The Dallas ceremony was led by Consul General D C Manjunath, who was joined by local elected officials and Indian-American community members. The Dallas ICAC is among nine such centres being opened across the United States to enhance accessibility to consular services. Other locations include Boston, Columbus, Detroit, Edison, Orlando, Raleigh, San Jose and an upcoming centre in Los Angeles. 'The launch of these new consular application centres across the US is part of our mission to serve the Indian diaspora more effectively by bringing services closer to their homes," Ambassador Kwatra said during the virtual inauguration. 'We remain committed to strengthening the ties between India and its global community." Consul General D C Manjunath said, 'Dallas has a large and dynamic Indian community. Opening this ICAC means residents can now access vital consular services quickly without travelling to Houston. It's truly bringing the Consulate to your doorstep." Local elected officials also welcomed the move. Texas State Representative Vikki Goodwin commented, 'This new consular centre is an important resource for our Indian-American neighbours, making government services more accessible and convenient." Dallas Indian Association president Rajesh Mehta said, 'The ICAC is a game changer for Dallas-area residents. It shows India's dedication to its diaspora and makes a real difference in people's lives." The centre offers services including passport, visa, Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) applications, power of attorney, birth and marriage certificates, attestations, police clearance certificates for foreign nationals, No Obligation to Return to India (NORI), and life certificates, among others. FASTag Annual Pass: Easing the hassle of travelling through the highways countrywide, the FASTag Annual Pass will launch on Independence Day (August 15). Introduced by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari, the annual pass will be available only for private vehicles at designated National Highway (NH) and National Expressway (NE) toll plazas. Here is everything you need to know about the FASTag annual pass. What is the FASTag Annual Pass? Effective from August 15, 2025, the FASTag Annual Pass allows free passage of private car/jeep/van at designated National Highway (NH) and National Expressway (NE) fee plazas for one year or 200 trips (whichever is earlier). What is the price of FASTag Annual Pass? The FASTage Annual Pass is priced at Rs 3,000 for the base year 2025-26. The payment can be made through the Rajmargyatra mobile application or the NHAI website. How to activate FASTag Annual Pass? The Annual Pass will be activated after verifying the eligibility of the vehicle and the associated FASTag. Once the Rs 3,000 payment is confirmed, the Annual Pass will be activated on the registered FASTag within two hours. How long is the FASTag Annual Pass valid? The Annual Pass is valid for one year from the date of activation or 200 transactions (trips), whichever comes first. Once the Annual Pass completes either 200 trips or one year from the date of activation, it will automatically revert to a regular FASTag. Can FASTag Annual Pass be transferred to another vehicle? No, the pass is non-transferable and is valid only for the vehicle on which the FASTag is affixed and registered. If a user uses it on another vehicle, it will be deactivated. What counts as a single trip under the FASTag Annual Pass? For point-based fee plazas, each crossing of a fee plaza counts as one trip. A round trip (to and fro) counts as two trips. As for Closed Tolling fee plazas, one pair of entry and exit counts as one trip.
