$4M Cowboy earns 1st-place votes, 'best guard in football' praise in ESPN iOL rankings

USA Today9 hours ago
When the Dallas Cowboys drafted Tyler Smith out of Tulsa, they had grand intentions. The plan was that he would play next to future Hall of Famer Tyron Smith, then take over as the left tackle of the future. Of course, front office plans aren't always viable once things start flying, and Smith has settled in at left guard in the Cowboys' offensive line.
Settled in doesn't quite do justice to what has transpired, as the 2022 first-round pick has become one of the NFL's top interior protectors, recently making the top-10 list composed by NFL executives at the behest of ESPN. Not only did he rise from Honorable Mention (following his All-Pro 2023 campaign), he landed at No. 2 overall and as the top guard in the entire exercise.
Smith even garnered multiple first-place votes, along with a ton of high praise.

Replacing Martin in Dallas is a tough task, but Smith has the ability to do just that.
The buzz surrounding Smith popped in the voting. He wasn't on every top 10 ballot, but most of the votes he did get were for first or second place.
"Most physically gifted guard in the league who could legitimately be a top starter at LT if they wanted to play him there," an NFL general manager said. "Strong, athletic, nasty, and cut his holding penalties in half last year."
Smith edged out Indianapolis Colts veteran Quenton Nelson for the honor of best guard, and finished one spot below Kansas City Chiefs center Creed Humphrey.
"Best guard in football," an NFL defensive line coach said. "Perennial Pro Bowl guy. Quick explosive, violent, strong hands, above-average pass pro, can reach second level."
Smith is scheduled to play for $2.5 million in 2025, with a cap hit of $4.2 million. The team invoked his fifth-year option, so he's also under their control for 2026 for $21.2 million, but with the way he's regarded around the league, Dallas is going to need to pony up for a big, long-term contract in the near future.

Bears Roll the Dice With 4 Bold Signings Before Camp

Bears Roll the Dice With 4 Bold Signings Before Camp originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With two weeks to go until training camp, the Bears are entering the final stretch of roster preparation—and the latest wave of additions has sparked quiet curiosity across Chicago. Four under-the-radar signings have surfaced ahead of camp, and while no blockbuster names were involved, the timing and nature of these deals have raised eyebrows. Depth, upside, and strategy seem to be the play. But what's really going on behind the scenes? Advertisement According to Just Another Year Chicago, the Bears have agreed to terms with offensive lineman Jordan McFadden, running back Travis Homer, and wide receivers Jahdae Walker and J.P. Richardson. Each of these signings falls in line with a low-risk, high-reward mindset that favors camp battles over splashy headlines. (Photo by Robin Alam/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images) It's the kind of gritty, backdoor maneuvering that doesn't turn heads—until it suddenly matters. McFadden, a 6'5', 315-pound tackle out of Clemson, brings size and versatility to the offensive line. A sixth-round pick in 2021, he started 38 games and was a key blocker during Clemson's 2020 title run. His 3-year, $6M deal includes just $1.5M guaranteed—camp competition clearly baked into the structure. If he clicks, the Bears could have a steal on their hands. (Photo by) Homer, a former Miami standout, signed a one-year, $1.2M 'prove-it' contract. Known for his burst and hands, he also offers special teams value. He's not going to bulldoze linebackers, but he's slippery in space and dependable when the ball finds him. If nothing else, he gives the running back room a jolt of energy—and maybe even forces a tough decision come roster cutdowns. Walker, undrafted out of Tennessee, posted 1,100 yards and 9 TDs in 2023 and is seen as a red-zone weapon in development. Think long strides, jump balls, and potential mismatch nightmares. Richardson, more polished, comes with reliable hands and route-running instincts but lacks elite speed. (Photo by) Still, the $2.2M RFA tender says the Bears see something. Maybe it's locker room IQ. Maybe it's leadership. Maybe it's just the edge needed in close games. CINCINNATI, OHIO - NOVEMBER 30: Ormanie Arnold #8 of the Cincinnati Bearcats breaks up a pass intended for JP Richardson #7 of the TCU Horned Frogs in the second quarter at Nippert Stadium on November 30, 2024 in Cincinnati, Ohio. (Photo by) These four deals hint at more than just depth moves. They represent a shift toward camp-fueled roster competition and cap-conscious structuring. Whether these players stick or not, their presence forces others to earn their spots—and that's no accident. With camp looming, Chicago's front office appears willing to take risks on talent the rest of the league may have overlooked. In a city hungry for wins, the margin for error is razor-thin—but if even one of these long shots hits, it could quietly reshape the 2025 roster. And in July, that's exactly the kind of bet that makes camp worth watching. Ranking the 25 best Oregon Ducks since 2000: No. 19 — Kayvon Thibodeaux

Over the last 25 years, the Oregon Ducks have been one of the single best teams in all of college football, sitting near the top of the sport for the better part of a quarter-century. Since 2000, Oregon has compiled an overall record of 239-83 (.742), with just two losing seasons during that span. They've been to 24 bowl games, won three Rose Bowls, been to a pair of College Football Playoffs, and appeared in two National Championships. They've seen a Heisman Trophy winner in Marcus Mariota and had 99 players selected in the NFL Draft. It's safe to say that when looking at the nation's best in this millennium, Oregon belongs in the conversation. But who are the players who helped get Nike University into that conversation? That's a different question entirely. To celebrate the quarter-century mark, we're going to dive into that question over the next month as we approach the start of the 2025 season. The Ducks have had hundreds of memorable and beloved players over the years, many of whom will live on forever in some way. But who is the best of the best? That answer, of course, is subjective. When reviewing the numbers and conducting our research, we took several factors into account: career statistics, overall impact and success, legacy, fan adoration, and NFL success. Boiling 25 years of Oregon football down to 25 players is no easy task, and not one that we took lightly. Dozens of players were left on the cutting room floor who deserve a spot in the top 25, and at some point, subtracting names off the list started to feel like pulling teeth. But in the end, we were left with 25 players, whom we will honor over the next few weeks. If you want to catch up, let's take a look at how we've gotten to where we're at in the rankings: Today, let's continue with No. 19 — the game-wrecking Kayvon Thibodeaux. Player Overview A five-star recruit out of Oaks Christian High School in California, Kayvon Thibodeaux committed to play for Oregon and became the highest-rated commit in program history, a title he holds to this day. He played three seasons with the Ducks, spending the majority of the time in the opponents' backfield. He burst onto the national scene as a true freshman, leading Oregon in several major statistical categories. His dominance didn't end there, as he registered 10 sacks over his final two seasons and was named the Pac-12 Championship Game MVP in 2020 and was a unanimous All-American in 2021. With his massive, yet athletically gifted frame at 6'5" and nearly 260 pounds, Thibodeaux routinely commanded double- and triple-teams. He was undoubtedly one of the best — and most feared — defensive linemen in college football across his three seasons. Kayvon Thibodeaux Career Stats 32 Games — 126 tackles, 34 TFL, 19 sacks Single Best Season 2021: 11 games — 49 tackles, 12 TFL, 7 sacks Though Thibodeaux battled an injury that caused him to miss two games, he still led the team in both tackles for loss and sacks and had a number of dominant, game-changing performances throughout the season. Despite Oregon finishing with a relatively disappointing 10-4 record and an Alamo Bowl loss, Thibodeaux was a finalist for both the Bronco Nagurski Trophy and Chuck Bednarik Award, was a unanimous All-American and was named PFF's Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Year. Kayvon Thibodeaux NFL Draft Thibodeaux's NFL-ready frame and skills led to his selection as the fifth overall pick in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. He was Oregon's first top-five selection since Marcus Mariota went No. 2 overall in 2015. Kayvon Thibodeaux NFL Success The immense talent Thibodeaux displayed at Oregon has been evident in spurts with the Giants, as he amassed 11.5 sacks and three forced fumbles in his second season. Yet he missed eight games combined in his rookie and third year, combining for 9.5 sacks total. But at just 24 years old, Thibodeaux still has tons of room to grow into a potential All-Pro type of player in the future. Kayvon Thibodeaux's Lasting Legacy Thibodeaux is unquestionably one of the most dominant defenders ever to don the green and yellow for the Ducks. He came out of high school with sky-high expectations and more than lived up to them, collecting accolades and leaving as a bona fide game wrecker. Now in the Big Apple, the support for Thibodeaux is still very strong among Duck fans despite being all the way across the country. Rams' 25 most important players for 2025 – No. 9: DT Kobie Turner

Knowing Aaron Donald may be nearing the end of his career, the Los Angeles Rams prepared in advance by drafting Kobie Turner in 2023. That gave him one year to learn from the future Hall of Famer, eventually taking the reins as the team's top defensive tackle last season. Turner has been a home run and game-changer on the interior for the Rams, similar to the way Donald was early in his career. And Turner is entering just his third season, which means he probably hasn't even scratched the surface of his true potential. While no one can replace Donald, Turner is a big reason the defensive line was so good in 2024. How he got here Turner was a third-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, going No. 89 overall out of Wake Forest. He transferred from Richmond to Wake Forest in college, which helped propel him up as a top-100 pick in the draft two years ago. 2024 stats 17 games (16 starts): 62 tackles, 8 sacks, 10 TFL, 13 QB hits, 4 batted passes, 1 forced fumble, 62 total pressures Projected role After playing some nose tackle and 3-technique as a rookie in 2023, Turner became more of a traditional 3-tech last season, playing 626 of his 919 snaps in the B-gap, according to Pro Football Focus. That trend should continue this year, particularly with Poona Ford coming aboard as the nose tackle in the middle. Turner is at his best rushing against opposing guards, using his impressive quickness and agility to work around blocks and pressure the quarterback. Why he's important Jared Verse led the NFL with 89 total pressures in the regular season and playoffs combined, but Turner wasn't that far behind considering he's an interior defender. His 62 pressures were the fourth-most among all defensive tackles in the league last season, trailing only Chris Jones, Zach Allen and Jalen Carter. A player with that level of production and talent is hard to replace, which is what makes Turner such an important player for the Rams – and one they'd be wise to extend sooner rather than later. He completely changes the look of the defensive line as a pass rusher, but he's also a great run defender who had 47 stops last season, tied for the most of any defensive tackle. It's not hard to make the case for Turner's importance to this team. Follow Rams Wire on X, Facebook and Threads for more coverage!
