Trump to announce tariffs on automobiles amid rattled markets and a global trade war
Leavitt did not provide details about the auto tariffs. Trump suggested a potential 25% tariff on imported vehicles in February. He has not said whether there could be carve-outs for automobiles covered in the U.S.-Canada-Mexico Agreement, the regional trade deal that Trump negotiated during his first term.
'I will leave that to him to make that announcement later,' Leavitt said of the 4 p.m. EDT press event.
Trump's announcement comes ahead of his long-promised reciprocal tariffs, set to go into effect April 2, whereby the U.S. will respond to any nation's tariffs on U.S. exports with tariffs of the same rate on imports from that country. Trump has called April 2 "liberation day in America."
On Monday, Trump also announced plans to impose a 25% tariff on imports from any country that purchases oil or gasoline from Venezuela, targeting the South American nation for what he called "purposefully and deceitfully" sending criminals into the United States.
The U.S. imported $474 billion worth of automotive products in 2024, including passenger cars worth $220 billion. Mexico, Japan, South Korea, Canada and Germany, all close U.S. allies, were the biggest suppliers.
Industry experts and former U.S. officials expect the administration to rely on an investigation Trump used during his first term as justification for the new levies.
Shares of U.S.-listed automakers fell on news of the press conference. Trump's aggressive use of tariffs in his second term has stoked anxieties on Wall Street and fears among consumers about the potential for increases in prices. Tariffs, which are taxes on imports, are typically passed down from companies to consumers, economists warn.
In a Wednesday morning sales forecast call, Cox Automotive chief economist Jonathan Smoke said massive increases in tariffs would be 'highly disruptive' to North American vehicle production, potentially leading to tighter supply, higher prices and a 'much weaker economy.'
Without carve-outs for automobiles and parts, Smoke said the auto market could be facing the highest effective tariff rate since World War II. Costs to make a vehicle assembled in Canada or Mexico could go up $6,000 or more, he said, while higher costs for parts could increase production costs for U.S.-made vehicles by roughly $3,000.
Smoke said new and used prices would likely increase. Tariffs could also mean fewer affordable options for drivers. With roughly half of the affordable vehicles sold in the U.S. dependent on Mexico or Canada, Smoke said rising costs could eliminate some of those nameplates.
'Storm clouds are forming on the horizon,' Smoke said, adding that disruptions could start as soon as mid-April.

Canada, New Zealand settle trade dispute regarding supply management of dairy sector
OTTAWA — Canada and New Zealand have settled a dispute over Ottawa's dairy-sector protections that regulate the cost and supply of products such as milk and cheese. The Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership includes certain quotas for countries to export dairy at preferred tariff rates into other member countries. New Zealand convinced a trade panel in September 2023 that Canada was unfairly limiting its quotas to protect domestic dairy processors. The panel ruled at the time that Ottawa had some discretion over how it allocates its dairy quotas, but that some of its rules violate the trade deal. On Thursday, both countries said they reached an agreement for technical changes, which the Liberals say only apply to quotas under the existing deal that won't mean more market access. Dairy Farmers of Canada said it was "aware" of the agreement, and said it has the understanding that this results in "certain, minor policy changes" that uphold the supply-management regime. New Zealand previously said that Canadian policies were costing its exporters the equivalent of $100 million Canadian over three years. ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert' viewers question why CBS canceled popular late-night show as Trump celebrates the decision
'I absolutely love that Colbert got fired,' President Trump said Friday morning. Fans, political figures and fellow late-night hosts seemed stunned Thursday night when comedian Stephen Colbert announced that CBS would be ending The Late Show in May 2026, with many questioning what pushed the network and its parent company, Paramount Global, to make the decision. CBS said in a statement that canceling the show was 'purely a financial decision' and 'is not related in any way to the show's performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.' But viewers wondered whether the decision had anything to do with Paramount and its recent settlement with President Trump over his lawsuit against 60 Minutes. On Friday morning, Trump celebrated the decision in a Truth Social post. 'I absolutely love that Colbert' got fired,' he wrote. 'His talent was even less than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. He has even less talent than Colbert!' Earlier this week, Colbert slammed Paramount's decision to pay Trump $16 million after he filed a defamation lawsuit claiming CBS's 60 Minutes interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris was edited in a way that created 'substantial news distortion calculated to confuse, deceive, and mislead the public.' As part of the settlement, Paramount said it would release the full transcripts of all future 60 Minutes interviews with presidential candidates. In Monday's opening monologue, Colbert said he was 'offended' by Paramount's settlement, and called the payment a 'big fat bribe.' 'I don't know if anything — anything — will repair my trust in this company,' Colbert said. 'But, just taking a stab at it, I'd say $16 million would help.' Days later, Colbert broke the news that The Late Show was canceled and would end in May 2026. The Beer Store adds 10 more locations to a growing list of closures
Ontario-based beer retailer The Beer Store is adding to a growing list of closures with 10 more locations slated for September as alcohol sales in grocery and convenience stores become more prevalent. The locations to close on Sept. 14 – scattered across the province – add to the 34 locations already closed or scheduled to close later this summer. 'The retail market for beer is changing in Ontario and for The Beer Store that means making the difficult decision to close some retail locations, Ozzie Ahmed, vice-president of retail at The Beer Store, said in a news release. 'This is not an easy decision and not one we make lightly.' 'The Beer Store recognizes the contributions our employees make to the business and in the communities where we operate. All efforts will be made to support employees through this process in alignment with commitments and agreements.' The Beer Store, legally operating as Brewers Retail Inc., is the largest beer retailer in Ontario, with 6,500 full- and part-time workers. Unlike the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO), it is privately-owned for the most part by three major brewing companies: Molson Coors Beverage Co., Labatt Brewing Co. Ltd. (owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV) and Sleeman Breweries Ltd. (owned by Sapporo Breweries Ltd.) For decades, The Beer Store held a near-monopoly on beer sales in Ontario, but that has slowly changed. Ontario began allowing beer sales in some grocery stores in 2015, then last year Ontario Premier Doug Ford further expanded the plan to all grocery stores and convenience stores. With the expanded alcohol sales, Ford offered up to $225 million in public funding for the retailer to keep 300 stores open until the end of 2025, and keep workers employed. The company had 407 stores in 2024, according to its 2024 operations report. The Beer Store is planning to run its recycling program until at least 2031.
