Court grants bail to Rahul Gandhi in defamation case over remarks on Savarkar

"Rahul Gandhi was allowed to appear before the additional chief judicial magistrate R C Narwadia through video conferencing on Thursday. The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha pleaded 'not guilty'," said his lawyer Jayant Jaybhave. They then moved a bail application. "The court allowed bail for Gandhi on a bond of Rs 15,000," added Jaybhave.
Jaybhave added that a revision plea was filed in the sessions court of judge P M Badar regarding the quashing of the defamation case.
"We have filed a revision plea on some merits that we have presented to the court. The court will study, and is likely to give its judgment soon," said the lawyer.
Nashik-resident Devendra Bhutada, through his lawyer Manoj Pingle, filed the criminal defamation case under sections 500 (defamation) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace) of the Indian Penal Code. The complainant is the director of an NGO and he alleged that Gandhi, at a press conference in Hingoli and in a speech during his yatra in Nov 2022, made statements that harmed Savarkar's reputation.

Markam had allegedly arranged incriminating materials, such as wires, switches, and firecrackers, for the Naxals before carrying out the IED blast, it added. NIA, which took over the probe in February 2024, said that it found the attack to have been planned by CPI (Maoist) Central Committee members Ganesh Uikey and Manoj, and Special Zonal Committee Member Satyam Gawade. It was allegedly carried out by cadres of the outfit's Gobra Dalam with the support of over ground workers (OGWs) from Badegobra-Chhotegobra village, the NIA said.
