Exhibition celebrates 125 years of Gaiety Theatre in Douglas

BBC News06-02-2025
A new exhibition celebrating the 125th anniversary of seaside theatre on the Isle of Man has been unveiled at the Manx Museum.Images mark key moments in the history of the Gaiety Theatre, highlighting its early days, restoration work and some well-known faces that performed on its stage. The display also features objects connected to the performance space such as a drum that belonged to comedian Ken Dodd.Technical Manager at VillaGaiety Séamus Shea said it was a "perfect opportunity to honour the legacy of this iconic venue and reflect on its ongoing story".
Situated on Harris Promenade in Douglas it was designed by renowned English architect Frank Matcham and celebrated its opening night on 16 July 1900.The first production it hosted was a performance of The Telephone Girl, starring musical comedy actress Ada Blanche. When demand to visit cinemas was high a projection suite was installed in 1932, which went on to became the theatre's principal form of entertainment during World War Two.The building, which had become dilapidated, was bought by the Manx government in 1971 and some restoration works began later that decade, with further extensive repair works taking place during the 1990s.
Manx National Heritage (MNH) said architect Frank Matcham had transformed "a non-descript music hall on Douglas Promenade" into "something truly special".The venue had survived "changes in taste and fashion, and narrowly avoided demolition on at least one occasion" but now "stands as the finest example of its kind in the British Isles", it organisation said.Praising the "magnificent building" MNH curator Matthew Richardson said the the hardest part of the project had been distilling the broad history of the building into exhibition."I have always loved the atmosphere of the Gaiety and have long thought how lucky we are on the Island to have such a magnificent building,"Mr Shea said the "captivating display" highlighted the theatre's "rich past, from its vibrant performances and renowned artists over the years to its transformation into a cinema and eventual restoration". Gaiety 125 can been seen in the Cabinet of Curiosity until 18 May and it will return to the space after a short break in the summer.

Learning English doesn't have to be a boring task - in fact, many musicians have made it easier for non-English speakers to pick up some 'lingo' Preply decided to find out who the musicians are that many fans are using as a means to learn English, based on their current research. Here are the artists that research found were the easiest to learn English from, and those artists who have made it more complex. Have you ever heard a song by a non-English speaking musician only to find their diction and vocabulary are better than many of the people you've met in your life? Perhaps that is because those artists in question chose to learn English not from a language school but from picking up dialogue from the pop culture world - be it television, film or on this occasion, music. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Shakira, for example, admitted that she was motivated to learn English so she could write songs for her first English-language album, and although she did work with a tutor, she listened to music, including Bob Dylan, to better understand the language. She's not alone either - Ricky Martin, Jackie Chan and Tove Lo have all recalled using English-speaking popular culture to help with the language barrier. But Preply, the online language learning app that connects tutors to learners worldwide, wanted to find out which artists are the easiest to learn from, and which artists are not. They analysed over 150 music artists and the lyrics of 25 of their popular songs to create their metric, with the results somewhat surprising. The science part (Methodology) Who from the English-speaking world of music has been helping those non-English speakers pick up the subtle nuances of the language, and who has made it completely complicated? | Canva/Getty Images To determine the Language Difficulty Quotient (LDQ)—a score designed to quantify the accessibility of an artist's lyrics for language learners- Preply employed a three-part methodology. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad First, they selected 158 artists from global popularity charts and gathered the lyrics from their 25 most popular songs. Next, for each artist, the research measured three core linguistic metrics: Vocabulary Accessibility: The percentage of words an artist uses from the 1,000 most common English words. A higher percentage indicates a more accessible language. Vocabulary Rarity: The average frequency rank of each unique word within a vast text corpus. A lower average rank suggests more common vocabulary. Vocabulary Difficulty: The average proficiency level (A1-C2) assigned to words by the Oxford English Dictionary. A lower average level signifies easier vocabulary. Finally, Preply calculated the LDQ by normalising these three metrics to a common scale, ensuring that a higher score consistently equated to "easier" language. These adjusted scores were then averaged and scaled to a final score from 1 to 100, with a higher LDQ indicating greater linguistic accessibility. Which musicians are the easiest to learn English from? It would appear that the more 'genteel' the work, the easier it is for non-English language speakers to pick up some of our vocabulary. British indie group Keane tops the list, with a language difficulty quotient of only 89.78, followed by 3 Doors Down (87.52) and Fleetwood Mac in third with a quotient of 87.16. Understandably, there are a lot of hip-hop artists whose vernacular at times is incredible, if you can only catch what they are saying. Topping the complex artists to learn from list is Eminem, with his rapid-fire verses including those found on 'Rap God' sending him to the top of the list with a quotient of 9.25, followed by Doechii (18.18) and Playboi Carti rounding out the top three with a quotient of 18.74. Tributes pour in for Edinburgh University alumnus and first female chief of MI5

More info Stella Rimington, the first female chief of Britain's MI5 intelligence agency and later a successful thriller writer, has died at the age of 90. The first woman to head a U.K. intelligence agency, Rimington was the inspiration for Judi Dench's portrayal of MI6 chief M in seven James Bond films. Her family said in a statement that Rimington died on Sunday "surrounded by her beloved family and dogs and determinedly held on to the life she loved until her last breath." MI5's current director-general, Ken McCallum, said that "as the first avowed female head of any intelligence agency in the world, Dame Stella broke through long-standing barriers and was a visible example of the importance of diversity in leadership." Born in London in 1935, Rimington studied English at Edinburgh University and later worked as an archivist. She was living in India with her diplomat husband in the mid-1960s when she was recruited by MI5, Britain's domestic security service, as a part-time clerk and typist in its New Delhi office. She joined the agency full-time after moving back to London in 1969 and rose through the ranks, overcoming rules that kept the most prestigious roles, such as recruiting and running agents, for men only. She worked in each of MI5's operational branches - counterespionage, counterterrorism and counter-subversion - at a time when MI5's work included sniffing out Soviet spies, infiltrating Northern Ireland militant groups and, controversially, spying on leftists, trade union leaders and other alleged subversives. Rimington was appointed MI5 director-general in 1992, the first head of the organization to be named in public, and her tenure saw the secretive organization become slightly more open. Dench's first appearance as M, a role formerly played by men, was in "GoldenEye" in 1995. The film's producers said the casting was inspired by Rimington's appointment. After stepping down in 1996, Rimington was made a dame, the female equivalent of a knight, by Queen Elizabeth II. Rimington later published a memoir, "Open Secret" - to the displeasure of the government - and a series of spy thrillers featuring fictional MI5 officer Liz Carlyle. "The Devil's Bargain," published in 2022, introduced a new heroine, CIA officer Manon Tyler. .Join Edinburgh Live's Whatsapp Community here and get the latest news sent straight to your messages. Other women followed her top intelligence jobs. Eliza Manningham-Buller led MI5 between 2002 and 2007. Anne Keast-Butler became head of electronic and cyber-intelligence agency GCHQ in Metreweli was named in June as the first female head of the overseas intelligence agency, MI6. Rimington and her husband, John Rimington, separated in the 1980s, but moved back in together during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020. "It's a good recipe for marriage, I'd say," she said. "Split up, live separately, and return to it later." She is survived by her husband, two daughters and five grandchildren.

When is Wednesday season 2 released on Netflix?

Wednesday season two will be released in two parts on Netflix The countdown is nearly at an end for the much-anticipated second season of Wednesday on Netflix. The series is set to grace screens across the globe imminently, promising fans another dose of its delightfully dark storytelling, reports the Mirror US. ‌ Jenna Ortega is back as Wednesday Addams, navigating the eerie corridors of Nevermore Academy with a fresh mystery to unravel in season two. Not only will viewers get more of the stoic and sharp-witted teenager and her pals, but they'll also see more of her eccentric family this time around, along with an A-list cast. ‌ Wednesday made its debut in 2022, offering a fresh take on the classic Addams Family saga. The first season was an instant hit, quickly becoming Netflix's second most-watched English-language series within just three weeks of release. ‌ The show garnered two Golden Globe Award nods and scooped up four Primetime Emmy Awards. Following its success, Wednesday was renewed for a second season in 2023, and more recently, in July 2025, Netflix confirmed a third season of Wednesday before the second had even aired. ‌ Reflecting on the show's impact, leading lady Ortega remarked: "It's still quite difficult to comprehend. I see the effects and changes that it's had on my life and my castmates' lives, but it's something that you're very detached from." She added: "If you see a number, it looks kind of crazy, but it's not like I've seen it in a room or anything like that." Ortega also shared her personal measure of success, saying: "I just try not to pay too much attention to that stuff because success for me is more about feeling accomplished and being able to put something out into the world and feel proud. ‌ "It's wonderful that it's been received so well, because there's a lot of pressure." She added: "When we started the show, I was 18 and had never worked with a director as big as Tim. I had led a show before, but not with a character that was so well known and loved prior to me joining. "It's a relief, but I would be lying if I didn't say that I still don't feel super anxious or feel like I have something I need to live up to every day on set. Maybe that's a good thing, but it hasn't gotten easier." ‌ Here's what you need to know about the release schedule for the show on Netflix. ‌ What time does Wednesday season 2 come out on Netflix UK?
