Professors from the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-K) will conduct classes over two days for members of the Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly in order to introduce them to the fundamentals of artificial intelligence (AI) and its potential use in governance. The workshop will feature hands-on demonstrations, as well as examples of software solutions developed at IIT-Kanpur, to showcase indigenous efforts in AI. Now, the details of the training schedule have emerged. The sessions will be held on the assembly premises and they will involve four faculty members from IIT-K's department of computer science and engineering. The programme aims to familiarise legislators with AI tools, their practical applications, and the ethical and technical nuances involved in their use. Prof Nitin Saxena, who is leading the initiative, said the workshop will cover a range of tools, including ChatGPT, and show how public representatives can deploy them in their day-to-day responsibilities such as drafting official notes, organising surveys, conducting constituency research and enhancing public communication. 'One of the key aspects of the training is to inform legislators that not everything generated by AI tools is accurate,' Prof Saxena said. 'Equally important is knowing how to spot such errors and exercise human judgment when using platforms like ChatGPT.' Through Saxena and his team, legislators will also be introduced to a curated list of AI tools that can support governance, improve transparency, and make decision-making more data-driven — a skill set increasingly relevant in public administration. The workshop will feature hands-on demonstrations, as well as examples of software solutions developed at IIT-Kanpur, to showcase indigenous efforts in AI. Following the initial session, MLAs interested in delving deeper into the subject will be invited to the institute for further training. Prof Saxena added that the material being shared is already available in the public domain. 'The idea is to make this knowledge accessible and actionable in legislative contexts. We will also touch upon the economics of AI and its emerging role across governance.' The state government's initiative has drawn appreciation for attempting to bridge the technological literacy gap in politics at a time when AI is reshaping policy-making across the world. Centre suggests 'country of origin' filter on e-commerce sites New Delhi/Mumbai: Consumer affairs department on Friday suggested e-commerce companies explore including a new filter feature of "country of origin" on their websites and mobile apps for products, which will help consumers make quick choices. E-commerce platforms would have to create a new filter having a drop down menu of countries, allowing consumers to make their choice as per their preference. At present, companies display the country of origin of items under the product description option and to check this, buyers need to go through the entire information of each product, which is more time taking. "Many of the e-commerce platforms have filters on their sites and apps such as price range, brand, type of product and different sizes. So, adding another filter on country of origin is very much feasible and that will help consumers to find items of their choice based on their country of origin quickly. This will bring customer satisfaction," said an official. We will hold more deliberations with the stakeholders," said an official. Sources said earlier the e-commerce firms smoothly complied with the Legal Metrology Rules for labeling packaged commodities. Industry sources said the meeting was more of an exploratory one where the idea was to understand the feasibility of getting the added filter within apps and platforms. They added that officials wanted to understand the constraints of companies if they were to create such a feature. "For marketplaces like Amazon, Flipkart and Myntra, it would be more of a tech related issue, which can be solved. But for companies which hold inventory, there may be an added compliance burden," one of them said. Another e-commerce executive, however, said that given the limited space on mobile phones, adding another filter could be a constraint. "It could be quite draining for the industry. And the expectation of the ministry is to get it done before the festive season if it gets implemented," he said. Satish Meena, adviser at market research firm Datum Intelligence, said if this is implemented, customers will be able to filter out products based on their country of origin which means that some brands on these platforms could lose visibility. "Until now, not many consumers paid so much attention to a product's country of origin. But overall, it shouldn't be a very big challenge for platforms," he added. For quick commerce platforms, food and grocery accounts for a major part of their coverage as of now and most of them are sourced from India anyway. A very small part of their inventory comes from out of India currently, added Meena.

Meta taps former OpenAI researcher Shengjia Zhao as Chief Scientist of its new Superintelligence AI Lab, signaling a bold move in the AGI race. Meta Platforms has appointed Shengjia Zhao, a former OpenAI researcher and co-author of the original ChatGPT paper, as the Chief Scientist of its new Superintelligence AI group, the company confirmed Friday (July 25). Zhao, who joined Meta in June, was a key contributor to OpenAI's early breakthroughs, including the development of ChatGPT and the company's first reasoning model, known as o1. The model helped set off a new wave of 'chain-of-thought' AI systems adopted by companies such as Google and DeepSeek. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced Zhao's formal appointment in a post on Threads, calling him 'our lead scientist from day one.' Zuckerberg added: 'Now that our recruiting is going well and our team is coming together, we have decided to formalize his leadership role.' Zhao will report to Alexandr Wang, the former CEO of Scale AI, who joined Meta in June as Chief AI Officer. Wang is leading Meta's efforts in building artificial general intelligence (AGI), AI that can think and reason at or beyond human capability. The move comes amid Meta's aggressive recruitment campaign in the AI sector. Over the past two months, the company has hired more than a dozen researchers from OpenAI, Apple, Google, and Anthropic. The lab is separate from Meta's long-standing AI research group FAIR, which will continue to be led by Yann LeCun, who now reports to Wang. Meta's recent hires have drawn attention for the size of the compensation packages involved. Some reports suggested offers exceeding $100 million, although the company has denied rumors of higher figures, including claims of $300 million current open-source model, LLaMA 4, has not yet matched the capabilities of OpenAI's GPT-4 or Google's Gemini models. The company is expected to release a more advanced model, internally codenamed 'Behemoth,' later this expressed optimism about the lab's future, saying, 'Together we are building an elite, talent-dense team that has the resources and long-term focus to push the frontiers of superintelligence research.'
