2 major wildfires force mass evacuations in Türkiye

ISTANBUL, July 26 (Xinhua) -- Two major wildfires in northwestern and northern Türkiye triggered mass evacuations on Saturday, with strong winds pushing flames toward residential areas and trapping vehicles on engulfed roads, local authorities said.
In Bursa province, an uncontrolled blaze between Kestel and Gursu districts spread rapidly toward villages, forcing evacuations. Online videos showed residents fleeing on foot as fire engulfed a main roadway, briefly stranding vehicles including civilian aid cars.
Meanwhile, a blaze that began on Thursday in Karabuk province remained uncontained, prompting precautionary evacuation of nearly 20 villages. Authorities closed the Ankara-Karabuk highway as residents attempted to relocate livestock from danger zones.
Turkish Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Ibrahim Yumakli confirmed on Saturday 76 active fires nationwide -- 28 forested and 48 rural, citing extreme heat and "very high risk" conditions.
He said firefighting teams will continue night operations.
Temperatures reached 38 degrees Celsius in Bursa and 37 degrees Celsius in Karabuk on Saturday, with forecasts predicting even higher temperatures over the next two days.

8 dead, 3 missing in north Vietnam's flash floods

HANOI: Eight people have died and three others remain missing following flash floods and landslides in recent days in Vietnam's northern province of Dien Bien, reported Xinhua quoting a Vietnam News Agency report Saturday. As of 6 am Saturday, around 60 houses had been swept away or damaged by floodwaters, according to the Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority. Thirty villages remain isolated due to disrupted traffic. Nearly 700 personnel, including police, military forces, local militia and members of various mass organisations, have been deployed to search for the missing. During a field visit to Xa Dung commune on Saturday morning, Vietnamese Deputy Prime Minister Tran Hong Ha urged local authorities to act swiftly to ensure that no resident is left hungry, cut off for extended periods, or without access to information. He emphasised that the safety of both rescue workers and flood-affected residents must be guaranteed under all circumstances. - Bernama-Xinhua

Estonian rescuers deployed to help Spain combat wildfires

TALLINN, Aug. 1 (Xinhua) -- The first Estonian rescue team was deployed to Spain to combat wildfires on Friday, with a second team scheduled to depart on Aug. 17. Each team consists of 20 rescuers. This year, Spain has already experienced over 3,300 wildfires, which have affected more than 20,000 hectares of forests and natural areas. One of the largest fires occurred in mid-July in the province of Tarragona (Catalonia), where flames scorched over 3,200 hectares and impacted the habitat of around 18,000 people. Three people lost their lives in the blaze, including one firefighter. Estonian rescuers also assisted with wildfire suppression efforts in Spain in August of last year. The first team will operate in the Castilla-La Mancha region from Aug. 1 to 16, and the second will work in Galicia from Aug. 17 to 30. Half of the team members participated in last year's mission, while the other half are new and lack prior experience in such operations. In recent years, summer wildfires have become a serious issue in Southern Europe, and teams from other nations were brought in to assist, with coordination through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism.
