New grandmother dies after traffic collision, inquest hears

Rhyl Journal5 days ago
Mary Owen-Jones of Dinerth Road, Rhos-on-Sea, had just become a grandmother when the incident took place near the main entrance of Ysbyty Glan Clwyd on January 1, 2023.
An inquest was held into the 51-year-old's death at County Hall in Ruthin on Friday, July 4.
At approximately 8.40pm, a car collided with her and she was taken to the emergency department in wheelchair.
Initially conscious but confused, Mrs Owen-Jones reported severe pain in her left ankle and leg at the time, but no obvious pain elsewhere.
Medics proceeded to take her to resus where she suffered a seizure. A CT scan revealed a fractured skull and internal brain injury.
A witness statement from the neurologist on shift described it as an 'unsurvivable injury.'
Mrs Owen-Jones was transferred to Royal Stoke University Hospital where she sadly died two days later (January 3).
The inquest heard the driver of the vehicle had finished a long shift at the hospital and had been doing 15mph in an advisory 10mph zone.
A statement from NWP Sergeant Liam Morris states the driver recalls checking the junction twice, but did not see the pedestrian until she was immediately in front of the car.
Mr Stephen Hall had just finished a 12-hour-shift when he witnessed the accident.
He recalls the vehicle windscreen being misted due to cold temperatures, however, a forensic report could not support this.
Mr Ian Thomas, North Wales Police Forensic Officer, also states that the pedestrian wearing dark clothing against a dark background would also contribute to poor visibility.
A CCTV and dashcam analysis of the incident found no substantial evidence that could aid the investigation, again due to poor visibility of the area.
A motor garage further confirmed there had been no defaults with the vehicle at the time of the collision.
Senior coroner John Gittins said the events of New Year's Day 2023 were a real tragedy for a family who had just welcomed a new baby into the world.
Mr Gittins concludes the death as being caused by a road traffic collision, with medics confirming Mrs Owen-Jones had suffered a severe traumatic brain injury.
To the family, he said: "My heartfelt condolences to you all.
"This has emphasised the fragility of life."

Murder victim's final 4 words on call before being brutally killed on dog walk

Mum-of-six Anita Rose was beaten black and blue by 56-year-old Roy Barclay, who had been on the run from police for a similar brutal attack on an OAP A woman who was tragically murdered in a brutal attack on an early morning dog walk had been on the phone joking with her partner just moments earlier. Mum-of-six Anita Rose was beaten black and blue by 56-year-old Roy Barclay, who had been on the run from police for a similar brutal attack on an OAP. Ms Rose's long term partner Richard Jones told a murder trial the last thing she said to him was 'drive safe, I love you'. He later tried to video call her, and although the phone was answered he was met with a blank screen and no sound. Mr Jones, a lorry driver, told murder trial at Ipswich Crown Court he would keep in touch with Ms Rose while he was working away, and that they spoke on the morning of July 24 last year – the day she was found injured. Ms Rose, 57, was found injured by a cyclist in Brantham, Suffolk, and died four days later of traumatic head injuries. Mr Jones said he and Ms Rose shared an English springer dog called Bruce, but she would tell him it was his dog when she walked it. Prosecutor Christopher Paxton said that in a call at 5.24am on July 24, Ms Rose told Mr Jones: 'I'm walking your bloody dog already.' Mr Jones said he had been working away at Goole in the East Riding of Yorkshire when he called her that morning. Mr Paxton said: 'We know the call lasted just over three minutes. What can you remember talking about?' Mr Jones said: 'She asked if I was up ready for work, I said I was but I was running late. I said I will phone you when I get there. 'She said 'drive safe, I love you'. 'That's the last conversation I had with her.' Mr Paxton asked how Ms Rose had sounded, and Mr Jones replied: 'Fine.' The court heard Mr Jones made a WhatsApp video call to Ms Rose at 6.15am as he was off-loading his lorry at a Tesco site. Mr Jones said: 'It got answered but there was a black screen.' He said there was 'no sound', and asked by Mr Paxton if he could hear anything he said: 'No, nothing.' Mr Paxton said: 'We know the video call was open for a minute – did you say anything?' Mr Jones replied: 'All I said was 'Anita, Anita'.' He said he did not hear anything back. Judge Martyn Levett asked Mr Jones: 'Had that ever happened to you before on a call like that?' He replied: 'No, never.' Mr Jones said he ended the call, and that a number of further calls that he made to Ms Rose went unanswered. 'I thought it was strange for her not to answer her phone,' he said. 'The night before she puts her phone on charge.' Mr Jones said he had known Ms Rose since he was a teenager, and he is now 'coming up to 60' he added that they had been in a relationship since 2011. Mr Jones described Ms Rose as 'very houseproud' and said she felt 'very safe' in Brantham. Roy Barclay had been on the run trying to avoid the police as he was trying to avoid being recalled back to prison for fracturing nearly all of the bones of an 82-year-old man's face back in 2015, when he attacked Ms Rose, 57. Today, a jury found him guilty of murder and he now faces life behind bars, but will be sentenced at a later date when a minimum term will be set.

Two grey pebble-dashed terraced houses 'used as brothels' in Welsh city

Two grey pebble-dashed terraced houses 'used as brothels' in Welsh city A man accused of having a 'hands-on' role running two brothels in Swansea has gone on trial The defendant is alleged to have run brothels at 48 Norfolk Street (left) and 2 Francis Street in Swansea A man has gone on trial accused of having a "hands-on" role running brothels in houses in a Welsh city. Crisit-denis Miclescu is said to have facilitated the use of two terraced properties in Swansea for the purposes of prostitution. Miclescu did not attend the opening of his trial at Swansea Crown Court, and following legal submission from prosecution and defence barristers the case began in his absence. The 24-year-old year old has previously denied the allegations. ‌ Craig Jones, opening the case for the prosecuting, told the jury that the case involved two properties in Swansea, namely 48 Norfolk Street in the Mount Pleasant area of the city and 2 Francis Street near Victoria Park and St Helen's, both of which were rented by the defendant at the relevant time. ‌ He said police first attended the Norfolk Street property on October 28, 2022, and found three Romanian females sat in the living room. Phones were seized and the prosecutor said an examination of the devices showed messages which "clearly advertised the provision of sexual services on a paid for basis". For the latest court reports sign up to our crime newsletter The prosecutor said police attended at the Francis Street house on March 21, 2023, and found five women at the address along with the defendant. No search was carried out on that occasion. He said officers attended the property again on April 4 and again found five females - four of whom had not been present at the previous visit - and the defendant. The court heard Miclescu tried to flee over the back garden fence but was detained. Again phones were seized. Article continues below The barrister told the jury they would hear evidence of a financial investigation into the defendant's six bank accounts which showed that between November 2021 and April 2023 some £150,000 was credited to his accounts while the investigator who went though the transactions could find no signs of any salary or wage-type payments. He also said the investigator also found payments totalling £9,940 from the accounts to a website which hosted, among other things, adverts for adult services. Mr Jones told the jurors that they would also hear evidence of the purchase of bulk quantities of condoms from the defendant's Amazon account, and hear details of messages recovered from the seized phones where sexual services were discussed and during which the postcodes of the two properties were sent out to contacts "many hundreds of times". ‌ The barrister said following his arrest Miclescu gave officers prepared statements in which he denied any knowledge of the properties being involved in prostitution and denied exerting any control over what was going on. Mr Jones said it was the prosecution case that the defendant was "controlling, assisting and facilitating the operation of these two addresses as brothels" and had a "hands on" role in the operation. The first evidence put before the jury was from South Wales Police constable Neil Lofthouse who is the officer in the case. Article continues below The officer took the jury through a number of text conversations recovered from phones seized from the two properties during which sex acts and prices were discussed. The court heard many of the conversations ended with a post code for one of the properties - sometimes accompanied by directions and the colour of the front door - being sent to the contacts. Crisit-denis Miclescu, of Jones Terrace, Mount Pleasant, Swansea, denies two counts of keeping a brothel, and the trial continues.
