Bubble watch: These golfers are hovering around the line to make season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship
The penultimate event on the PGA Tour Champions 2024 schedule is this week at the Simmons Bank Championship in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Following last week, which started with 72 golfers, there are now 54 still standing at Pleasant Valley Country Club for a 54-hole tournament that starts Friday.
The top of the points race has been holding steady, with Ernie Els checking in at No. 1, followed by Steven Alker, Stephen Ames, Richard Green and K.J. Choi. Els and Ames lead in the wins category in 2024 with three each while Paul Broadhurst (No. 8) and Padraig Harrington (No. 11) are tied at two wins apiece.
On Sunday, the field will be whittled down one last time, to just the top 36 golfers, who will then get a week off before heading to Phoenix Country Club for the season finale.
While hoisting the trophy this week is the goal for everyone, a slew of new golfers are competing in the tournament within the tournament to make the field for Phoenix.
Two golfers, Tim O'Neal (55th to 13th) and David Bransdon (56th to 35th) not only jumped into this week's field by virtue of how they played last week, but they both shot into the top 36.
But it's crunch time for many others.

Padraig Harrington outlasts Stewart Cink and Miguel Angel Jimenez to win U.S. Senior Open
A three-way tie for the 54-hole lead became a three-horse race Sunday at the 2025 U.S. Senior Open. It just wasn't the same three golfers. In the end, it was Padraig Harrington winning the event for a second time in front large galleries at the Broadmoor's East Course in Colorado Springs. Harrington, Stewart Cink and Mark Hensby were all at 8 under after three rounds at the fourth of five majors on the PGA Tour Champions. Late in the back nine Sunday, Cink and Harrington were joined in the pursuit by Miguel Angel Jimenez, where they moved up final round tee times by two hours because of inclement weather expected Sunday afternoon. Advertisement Harrington made birdies on three of his first five holes. He later answered bogeys on 7 and 10 with birdies on 9 and 11. Meanwhile, Cink poured in four straight birdies on Nos. 2, 3, 4 and 5 to get to 11 under but a bogey on the 11th dropped him to 10 under, a shot back of Harrington, as the duo traded the lead five times on the front nine. Jimenez made things interesting after he went 6 under through his first 14 holes to get 9 under. Jimenez already has one major win, the Kaulig Companies Championship, this season, and made another birdie on No. 16 to get to double digits under par. While Jimenez was the first to post a score, signing for a final-round 64 to get to 9 under, he did take a bogey on the last hole with Cink was at 10 under and Harrington at 11 under at that time. Moments later, Cink missed a chance to tie for the lead, pushing a six-footer to the right, so he stayed at 10 under with a hole to go. Padraig Harrington hits a tee shot on the sixth hole during the final round of the 2025 U.S. Senior Open at Broadmoor Golf Club. On 18, Harrington, with a one-shot lead, stuffed his approach to give him a birdie look. Cink then hit wedge into the green and after initially looking to be just outside Harrington's ball, it spun away from the hole. Advertisement Cink would putt first, from about 30 feet away and he left it a foot outside. After Hensby putted, Harrington needed just two putts from eight feet for the win and he did just that, finally tapping in for his second U.S. Senior Open. Harrington takes US Senior Open after Hensby falters
Padraig Harrington has come out on top of a major championship that felt more like match play, closing his final with seven straight pars at the US Senior Open to top Stewart Cink by one shot. But there was disappointment for Australia's Mark Hensby, who had started the day as co-leader with Harrington and Cink. He had hoped to mark his 54th birthday in style but could not conjure any of the magic that led to 19 birdies over the first three days and a share of the lead. HARRINGTON WINS THE BATTLE AT THE BROADMOOR ⛰️Padraig Harrington is a two-time U.S. Senior Open champion. — USGA (@USGA) June 29, 2025 Aiming to become just the second Aussie to win the event after Graham Marsh in 1997 and the first to win a senior major championship since Stewart Ginn at the 2002 Senior Players Championship, he only made two birdies on Sunday. He shot a three-over 73 to tie for fourth at five under with Thomas Bjorn. Playing alongside Cink for the fourth straight day, Harrington shot a three-under 67 to finish on an 11-under 269 on the tricky, heavily sloping Broadmoor course. The Irishman sealed the match by hitting his approach to eight feet on No.18, putting pressure on Cink, who trailed by one but sat 30 yards in front of him on the fairway. Cink's approach landed on the precipice of a ledge, but spun backward and did not come to rest until it was 35 feet away to set up a two-putt. That made it advantage Harrington, who also two-putted to win his second US Open title in four years, adding that to a trophy case that also includes the 2007 and '08 British Opens and the 2008 PGA. The only player who threatened to get in the mix in this two-man show was Miguel Angel Jimenez. After opening with bogey, Jimenez made eight birdies to pull within a shot of the lead. But he yanked his tee shot well left on No.18, had to punch out and made bogey. He still shot the best round of the tournament, a six-under 64, and finished in third, two shots back. Of the other Aussies, Cameron Percy finished joint ninth, Scott Hend was equal 16th, Greg Chalmers shared 18th while Steve Allan and Rod Pampling tied for 22nd. Stuart Appleby finished joint 32nd, with Richard Green 45th.
