Microsoft offers a glimpse at the future of Xbox gaming alongside AMD and Windows
Microsoft has confirmed that a next-generation Xbox console is currently in development in partnership with chipmaker AMD. The announcement was made by Xbox president Sarah Bond in a short video posted to YouTube (and also on the Xbox account on X).
In the video, Bon promised that Microsoft would deliver "an Xbox experience not locked to a single store or tied to one device."
The short teaser provides a glimpse of the future of Xbox gaming beyond just consoles. As the company has promised in recent months, the goal is that "anything" can be an Xbox.
To start, Bond stated that Microsoft and AMD are collaborating in a "strategic multi-year partnership" that involves the two companies developing a silicon for use "across a portfolio of devices — including our next-generation Xbox consoles in your living room and in your hands." The companies will also work on improving Xbox Cloud Gaming.
Of course, the thrust of Xbox going forward is that the Xbox platform itself won't be tied to consoles like the Xbox Series X or the Xbox Series S.
"This is all about building you a gaming platform that's always with you, so you can play the games you want across devices anywhere you want," Bond says in the video. "Delivering you an Xbox experience not locked to a single store or tied to one device."
She added that the Xbox team will be working closely with the Windows team to make sure that "Windows is the number one platform for gaming."

This all comes a little more than week after the announcement of two Asus ROG Xbox Ally handheld devices that are supposed to launch later this year. Those handhelds are going to feature a custom full-screen Xbox experience including a streamlined version of Windows 11.
The new Xbox experience will run on top of Windows but will also allow you to access other gaming stores like Steam or Epic. What we gather from Bond's announcement is that future consoles will have similar access to non-Xbox store fronts.
It seems that Microsoft finally realized that Windows just wasn't working for the best handheld gaming consoles. of course though, the software giant still wants Windows to power these devices including those made by Microsoft and third-party manufacturers.
For those worried about their game library, it sounds like Xbox will continue to offer backwards compatibility. The next consoles will be 'maintaining compatibility with your existing library of Xbox games," Bond says. The Xbox Asus handhelds likely won't run any Xbox games that don't already have PC ports, but the next generation of consoles should run older games.

After a few years of massive gains, AI stocks kicked off the year getting slammed as a bubble. Talk of bloated valuations and too much hype had investors wondering if the party was over. 💵💰💰💵 Then in April, President Donald Trump's surprise tariffs crashed the market, pulling down the S&P 500 by nearly 19%. AI bellwether stocks like Nvidia () and Microsoft () tanked, and many felt the AI rally was dead and buried. Yet here we are with the S&P 500 at an all-time high, lifted by a roaring AI comeback driven by chip leaders and cloud giants. Now one of Wall Street's sharpest has AI back at the helm, pointing to two giants ready to win big. In the AI race, Nvidia and Microsoft play different but critical roles in advancing the industry. Nvidia's ubiquitous AI-ready GPUs are the go-to hardware for training and inference. Together, Nvidia's cutting-edge chips and Microsoft's cloud and tools power the entire AI stack, pushing them ahead of their peers. Wedbush thinks Nvidia and Microsoft could touch $4 trillion in market cap this year and ride the AI wave to $5 trillion by next year. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang believes robotics will be the next multi-trillion-dollar catalyst after AI. In crunching the numbers, Microsoft's market cap has slipped 10.8% over the past year, losing about $400 billion. Conversely, Nvidia soared nearly 25%, adding $950 billion from its AI GPU boom. Stretch that to three years, and the gap gets even wider. Microsoft's up a robust 21%, but Nvidia's exploded 472% as it pivoted from gaming chips to the AI driver's seat. Runway now has its sights on the video game industry with its new generative AI platform
The AI startup Runway, which recently partnered with AMC Networks, is now trying to break into the gaming industry. The company has plans to launch its latest platform, called Game Worlds, next week, according to The Verge . The new tool lets Runway users create something akin to an interactive text-based game that can generate text and images from AI. Even though Game Worlds can only produce basic designs for now, the company's CEO, Cristóbal Valenzuela, is hoping this will be the first step towards more AI use in the gaming industry. Valenzuela told The Verge that "generated video games are coming later this year," adding that Runway is looking to partner with video game companies, which will be able to use the company's AI tools, while it gets access to video game datasets to train its AI on. However, the use of AI in video games has already drawn a lot of criticism from industry professionals, even leading to the SAG-AFTRA union striking against video game companies using its members' likenesses and voices to train AI. Runway has faced its own controversy for reportedly training its AI on YouTube videos and pirated movies despite being against the video platform's terms. Still, Runway is looking to replicate the similar success it's had with major TV and film studios. In the AMC deal, the AI company would help create promotional materials and help "accelerate pre-visualization during development." Before AMC, Runway secured a partnership with Lionsgate to provide its AI for the studio's "pre-production and post-production process." As for the gaming world, Runway wouldn't be the first to introduce generative AI since the industry has seen other examples already, like Ubisoft using a tool called Ghostwriter to create video game dialogue.
