Fintech majors are counting on co-branded cards in returns play
Empower your mind, elevate your skills
Major Indian fintechs operating on the UPI network are expanding their credit portfolio to generate steady revenue from the business as the government continues to provide UPI payments free of cost.Google Pay, the second largest UPI payment application, is working on building a co-branded credit card product in partnership with Axis Bank , according to two people in the know. This comes after Google Pay launched gold loans with Muthoot Finance late last year and personal loans before that on the popular payment application. Google Pay offers personal loans between Rs 30,000 to Rs 10 lakh with tenures between six months to six years. For gold loans, Google just acts as a sourcing channel, where customers can reach out to Muthoot Finance and secure a doorstep appointment.Google Pay and Axis Bank did not respond to ET's queries.Recently PhonePe, the most popular UPI payment application, launched a co-branded credit card in partnership with HDFC Bank "This is mostly a distribution strategy from the likes of Google Pay. Fintechs which help source a credit card customer for banks can get around ₹1,000 to ₹1,200 as a sourcing commission," said a founder of a lending startup that works with multiple fintechs to source customers. These fintechs have a large base of customers who are engaging with the app on a regular basis, so the idea is to find out means of cross-selling products to this customer base, according to industry insiders."In terms of scale these UPI apps would be disbursing around Rs 50 crore per month, while they get good volumes from customers checking their credit scores, not many of them actually qualify for a loan through these apps," said a second founder who also runs a digital lending startup. In a single quarter, Paytm , which as a consumer-facing app runs one of the most successful lending operations, disburses around Rs 1,500 crore in personal loans.Fintechs get two major things out of these partnerships, one is they build stronger engagement with their customers and second, they generate a commission for sourcing a customer for these lenders. As per industry estimates, a personal loan product carries a commission of around 2% of the amount disbursed and for gold loan it would be less than 0.3%.For the US-based technology giant, Indian fintech play has been mostly restricted to running the payments app, which processes around 6.5 billion transactions monthly. But now, as revenue generation through core payments becomes tougher every day, Google is also opening up to offering more credit products and scaling them up.Amazon, another American tech giant active in the Indian fintech ecosystem, runs a successful co-branded credit card in partnership with ICICI Bank with more than five million users and is looking to secure a non-banking finance company licence by acquiring Axio (previously Capital Float).

NITI Aayog suggests services focused trade deal with US
New Delhi: NITI Aayog on Monday suggested that India should follow the model of the India-UK agreement to pursue a services-oriented trade deal with the US, with special focus on information technology, financial services, professional services, and education. The Aayog in its third edition of 'Trade Watch Quarterly' said there will be significant opportunities for India in the US markets both in terms of the number of products and volume of the US market. "Building on the model of the India-UK agreement, India should pursue a services-oriented trade deal with the US, placing strong emphasis on key sectors such as information technology, financial services, professional services, and education," it said. The government thinktank said the agreement should include robust provisions for digital trade, creating a framework for enhanced cross-border service delivery. The Aayog also emphasised that India must advocate for improved visa access for its professionals, particularly under H-1B and L-1 categories. "This should include provisions for intra-corporate transferees and independent service providers, which are crucial for maintaining India's competitive edge in the global services industry," it growing global demand for Digitally Delivered Services (DDS), the Aayog said India should seek firm market access commitments from the US in high-growth areas such as cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, telecom, and design services. "Leveraging India's strengths in these sectors can help increase bilateral trade and innovation-led growth," it said. Observing that regulatory barriers such as inconsistent data compliance and intellectual property concerns hinder Indian service exports, the Aayog said joint efforts between India and the US are needed to simplify licensing procedures and address cross-border data flow issues, enabling smoother market access for Indian firms. The government thinktank also said that to expand professional opportunities, India should push for broader Mutual Recognition Agreements (MRAs) that cover a wider range of professions, including engineers, architects, and healthcare workers. "These agreements would streamline certification processes and facilitate the mobility of Indian professionals to the US," it said.

Boon For Farmers: PM Dhan Dhanya Krishi Yojana gets Cabinet nod
New Delhi: The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, met on Wednesday and approved the Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhanya Krishi Yojana, as announced in the 2025-26 budget. The scheme primarily aims to enhance agricultural productivity, promote crop diversification, and encourage sustainable agricultural practices. Further objectives include increasing post-harvest storage capacity, improving irrigation facilities, and facilitating better credit availability. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, speaking after the weekly Cabinet meeting, stated that the programme will benefit 1.7 crore farmers. With a commencement date of 2025-26, an annual financial outlay of Rs 24,000 crore is earmarked for at least six years. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman had proposed on February 1 that the government, in partnership with states, would launch the 'Pradhan Mantri Dhan-Dhanya Krishi Yojana'. This scheme will be implemented in collaboration with 36 existing schemes across 11 departments, other state schemes, and the private sector. As many as 100 districts will be identified based on three key indicators: low productivity, low cropping intensity, and low credit disbursement. At least one district will be selected from each state. District, state, and national-level committees will be formed to monitor the scheme. The District Dhan Dhanya Committee, which will include farmer members, will finalise the scheme at the district level. In each Dhan Dhanya district, the scheme's progress will be monitored monthly via a dashboard tracking 177 key performance indicators (KPIs). NITI Aayog will also review and provide guidance on district plans. Furthermore, a designated central nodal officer for each district will regularly review the scheme's implementation. The scheme is expected to boost crop production, add value to the agriculture and allied sectors, generate local livelihoods, and thus achieve self-reliance. As indicators improve in these 100 districts, national indicators are also projected to rise.

Major relief to lorry owners as govt slashes Green Tax
Vijayawada: The Andhra Pradesh Lorry Owners Association and truck operators' persistent efforts have led to a significant reduction in the Green Tax on older vehicles. On Wednesday, the state government issued an ordinance amending the Andhra Pradesh Motor Vehicles Taxation Act of 1963, outlining revised annual tax rates and providing substantial relief to lorry owners and other vehicle users. The ordinance will benefit over three lakh lorry operators by significantly lowering the Green Tax. According to the new rules, vehicles aged between seven and 12 years from registration will incur an annual Green Tax of Rs 1,500. For vehicles older than 12 years, the tax is set at Rs 3,000 annually. Previously, vehicle owners paid 50 per cent of the quarterly tax for vehicles aged seven to 10 years, with the tax varying based on vehicle size, tyres, and other factors. For vehicles aged 10 to 12 years, owners paid one quarterly tax, while those over 12 years faced a hefty Rs 20,000 Green Tax. The high Green Tax had long burdened the transport sector, prompting truck operators to demand relief. Recently, the state Cabinet approved the tax reduction. Andhra Pradesh Lorry Owners Association general secretary Y V Eswara Rao along with other leaders, met Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to urge the issuance of GO. The ordinance has now been released, with the new tax rates set to take effect soon. Eswara Rao expressed gratitude to Chief Minister, the transport minister, public representatives, and senior officials for the gazette notification. He noted that the reduction fulfills a long-standing demand of the lorry owners, particularly since the NDA coalition government assumed office, and will benefit over three lakh truck operators across Andhra Pradesh.
