Thousands flood Bay Roberts for largest street hockey tournament in N.L.

Yahoo23-06-2025
Thousands of people rolled into Bay Roberts over the weekend for the largest street hockey tournament in Newfoundland and Labrador.
It marked the seventh annual running of the Light the Lamp tournament, with nearly 270 teams from all over the province hitting the street to play hundreds of games over two days.
Eddie Russell, the town's recreation director, said the first day saw 400 games alone. He estimates that at least 8,000 people passed through the tournament grounds.
"It's a pretty massive event for sure," said Russell.
The event grounds had 20 courts, with 18 kids playing at a time and two referees each.
"It's organized chaos," said Russell. "There's so many moving pieces and it all comes together."
While most of the players come for the competition, Russell said it's also a time for people to come together.
"Everybody likes to win, but you make new friends, you spend time with your teammates, parents, all that stuff," he said.
The championship games were gearing up when Russell spoke to CBC on Sunday. He said he was relieved that everything had gone so smoothly.
"[I'm] proud to be a part of this event, part of the team and the committee, the staff, the town itself, that we could pull off such a major event," he said.
Jack Norman, Ava Parsons and Mason Akerman rounded out a hometown team called the Bay Roberts Mini Stix.
They said the weekend was all about the competition — but also about taking in some of the off-court activities.
"[I was] trying to go hard and focusing in," Norman said.
"We just played a lot of games and I had a lot of slushies," said Akerman.
The squad remained focused and motivated heading into the championship games and were appreciative that the event drew so many people to their town.
"It's really nice that they're coming to Bay Roberts to experience Light the Lamp," said Norman.
Mayor Geoff Seymour, said the event was a great boost for his community, describing it as a "first class event."
"It's an opportunity for 2,000 to 3,000 kids to get out there and enjoy two days of outdoor activity, fresh air, and exercise. That's perhaps the most important thing," he said.
Not only was the tournament a hit among kids, it also brought with it an economic boost.
"All these people coming into town for two days, hotels are filled, Airbnbs are filled, restaurants, takeouts, convenience stores, shopping — there is an economic spinoff that comes from it," said Seymour.
Next to the Newfoundland and Labrador Summer Games, which took place in Bay Roberts last year, Seymour said the annual street hockey tournament is the busiest event of the year.
"It's an amazing event. We've been doing this for seven years and I think it just gets better," he said.

Canucks prospect Braeden Cootes making his case at Canadian world junior camp

Vancouver Canucks 2025 first-round draft pick Braeden Cootes is among the 20 forwards and 36 players overall slated to represent Hockey Canada in the World Junior Showcase, which runs today through Saturday in Minneapolis. Cootes, 18, is a right-shot centre with the WHL's Seattle Thunderbirds, and Vancouver picked him at No. 15 a month ago in Los Angeles. Cootes signed his three-year, entry-level deal with the Canucks July 9, and he's expected to return this season to the Thunderbirds. He had 26 goals and 63 points in 60 regular season games with a young, rebuilding Seattle team last season. He was Seattle's captain as well. There were 44 players invited to the camp this week, but eight forwards are listed as 'unable to attend' by Hockey Canada. The includes Kelowna Rockets centre Tij Iginla and Brandon Wheat Kings centre Roger McQueen, who both missed much of last season with injuries. Canada's invited list features seven players from last year's world junior squad who were eligible to return. Cootes is among 22 players invited who previously won gold at the Under-18 worlds. There are eight 18-year-old forwards invited, including Cootes. The remaining 20 are 19 years old. Longtime London Knights coach Dale Hunter is bench boss for this Canadian representative. The tournament is in Minneapolis and St. Paul and gets going Boxing Day. Cootes has been lauded for his leadership and character. Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin said on draft day: 'They have a lot of great history of NHL players coming out of that program and Braeden being a captain, a leader of that team, that excited my staff.' Canucks defence prospect Sawyer Mynio, who was a Cootes teammate with Seattle before being traded to the Calgary Hitmen last year, played for Canada at last year's world juniors in Ottawa. Canada lost 4-3 to Czechia in the quarterfinals. Mynio and Cootes shared the 'C' before Mynio went to Calgary. The players this week will spit into two teams for practices and an intrasquad game on Tuesday before facing Finland on Wednesday, Sweden on Friday and the U.S. on Saturday. Woad, 21, claims Scottish Open victory on pro debut

Women's Scottish Open final-round leaderboard -21 Woad (Eng); -18 H-J Kim (Kor); -14 S-Y Kim (Kor), Lopez (Spa); -13 Korda (USA); -11 Madsen (Den); -10 Reto (SA). Selected others: -8 Hewson (Eng); -6 Maguire (Ire); -5 Hull (Eng); -4 Hall (Eng); -1 Harry (Wal); E Fuller (Eng); +7 Williams (Wal), Dryburgh (Sco). Full leaderboard England's Lottie Woad delivered a statement victory on her professional debut at the Women's Scottish Open as a final-round 68 secured her second tour win. The 21-year-old went into the final round with a two-shot lead over South Korea's Sei Young Kim and held her nerve to keep the chasing pack at bay. Five birdies and one bogey - just her third in 72 holes around Dundonald Links - took Woad to 21 under for the tournament, three clear of nearest challenger Hyo Joo Kim. Seven-time LPGA winner Kim matched her at 20 under midway through the back nine, but successive bogeys at 15 and 16 allowed Woad to move clear at the top. Woad 'feeling good' as she keeps Scottish Open lead The former world number one amateur held a two-shot lead going down the par-five 18th and, after knocking a wedge to tap-in range, she finished in style with a birdie. "It's a pretty good outcome," Woad said in understated fashion. "I definitely wasn't expecting to win but knew I was playing well and just hoping to contend. "There's not many scoreboards out there, but I knew it was probably quite tight at one stage. "It's great. Links golf is really fun and it went fine. My dad was here all week and my mum got the train up last night, so I was hoping I wouldn't mess it up." Woad, who won the Irish Open as an amateur, turned professional last week after missing out on £400,000 prize money when finishing just a shot outside the play-off won by Grace Kim at the Evian Championship - the women's fourth major of the year. She now takes home £220,000 in prize money for winning on Scotland's west coast and heads to Royal Porthcawl for next week's Women's Open among the favourites. "Even if I hadn't won this week, I would still be trying to win the Open next week," added Woad. "It's still a learning curve getting used to the attention."

Islanders Schaefer, Aitcheson Invited To World Junior Summer Showcase

By: Kai Russel On Sunday, Hockey Canada announced that they invited 44 players to the 2025 World Junior Summer Showcase. Among those 44 were recent New York Islanders draftees Matthew Schaefer and Kashawn Aitcheson. 44 players invited to World Junior Summer Showcase Forty-four players will begin the road to the 2026 World Juniors at the Summer Showcase in Minneapolis. Schaefer, drafted first overall by the Islanders in June, scored seven goals with 15 assists for 22 points in 17 games with the Erie Otters of the OHL last season. The 17-year-old defenseman is already familiar with international competition, as he represented Canada's 2025 National Junior Team and won gold at the IIHF U18 Men's World Championship. Schaefer will be the second-youngest Canadian at the Summer Showcase, aside from projected 2026 first-overall pick Gavin McKenna. Taken by the Islanders at 17th overall in 2025, Aitcheson will join Schaefer and the Canadian d-corps at the Summer Showcase. The left-shot defenseman scored 26 goals with 33 assists for 59 points in 64 games with the Barrie Colts of the OHL last season. Like Schaefer, Aitcheson has experience representing Team Canada as a fellow gold medalist at the IIHF U18 Men's World Championship. Schaefer and Aitcheson's presence at the Summer Showcase is a welcome progression for the Islanders' prospect pool, which has seen a rising stock since the 2025 NHL Draft.
