
Deloitte study reveals Middle East youth are rewriting the rules of success, seeking money, meaning, and well-being
Only 6% of Gen Zs say their primary career goal is to reach a senior leadership position.
Middle East – As one of the world's youngest regions in terms of its demographics, the Middle East is at the forefront of a generational shift in workforce values. Young people in the region are prioritizing financial stability, personal purpose, and mental well-being over traditional markers of success such as climbing the corporate ladder, according to the 14th edition of Deloitte Global's Gen Z and Millennial Survey.
The survey findings are particularly relevant for the Middle East, where over 60% of the population is under the age of 30: in Saudi Arabia alone, two-thirds of nationals fall within this age group, while nearly half of the UAE's population is between 15 and 35.[1]

Deloitte's global study is based on responses from over 23,000 Gen Z and millennial participants across 44 countries. Three-quarters of respondents in these generations believe GenAI will transform their work in the coming year. Gen Zs and millennials are using GenAI more frequently, prioritizing training to boost their skills, and seeing improvements in their work quality. More than half already use GenAI in their day-to-day work, with 29% of Gen Zs and 30% of millennials using it all or most of the time.
However, more than 60% of youth worry GenAI will eliminate jobs and are motivated to seek jobs that they perceive as safe from GenAI-driven disruption. Working alongside GenAI, more than eight in 10 Gen Zs and millennials say developing soft skills, like empathy and leadership, is even more important for career advancement than honing technical skills. Yet only 6% of Gen Zs say reaching senior leadership is their top career goal. Instead, they are gravitating toward roles that allow for learning, growth, and balanced living.
Notably, these generations are questioning the value of higher education. Around one-quarter expressed concerns about the relevance of the curriculum to the job market, and the practical experience it offers.
The pursuit of money, meaning, and well-being
When asked about the factors that impact their career decisions, Gen Zs and millennials gave responses that fell into three categories: money, meaning, and well-being. The Deloitte survey underscores that these areas are tightly interconnected as respondents seek to find the right balance.
Financial insecurity is on the rise: nearly half of Gen Zs (48%) and millennials (46%) do not feel financially secure, up from 30% of Gen Zs and 32% of millennials in last year's survey. The survey data also reinforces that without financial security, Gen Zs and millennials are less likely to have a positive sense of mental well-being and less likely to feel their work is meaningful.
Moreover, purpose influences job satisfaction. Roughly nine in 10 Gen Zs (89%) and millennials (92%) consider a sense of purpose to be important to their job satisfaction and well-being. Among those who report positive mental well-being, 67% of Gen Zs and 72% of millennials feel their job allows them to make a meaningful contribution to society compared to 44% of Gen Zs and 46% of millennials who report poor mental well-being.

Deloitte's 2025 Gen Z and Millennial Survey reflects the responses of 14,751 Gen Zs (born between 1995 January and 2006 December*) and 8,731 millennials (born between 1983 January and 1994 December). Jordan: Prime minister says economic growth, job creation remain top priorities for gov't
AMMAN — Prime Minister Jafar Hassan said Monday that economic development remains the government's top priority, with a clear focus on achieving sustainable growth and creating job opportunities across. Speaking during a meeting with the Taqaddum parliamentary bloc, attended by Acting Speaker of the Lower House Mustafa Khasawneh, Hassan said that the recent economic indicators for the first quarter of the year are 'encouraging,' pointing to improvements in growth, trade, and investment figures. 'We hope this momentum continues and that these indicators strengthen further,' Hassan said, adding that the numbers reflect progress despite a decline in the mining sector due to global market conditions. 'Had it not been for this downturn, the current indicators would have reached record levels unseen in recent years.' The prime minister also outlined 'government interventions' aimed at supporting sectors impacted by regional tensions, most notably tourism. He cited positive signs of recovery expected with the start of the next tourism season in September, the Jordan news agency, Petra, reported. He also emphasised that economy is the government's number one file, with a focus on achieving sustainable economic growth to help create job opportunities, adding that the Economic Modernisation Vision is fundamentally based on this principle, especially by supporting the private sector, expanding its role, and attracting investments, mainly into industrial cities and development zones across the country. He also highlighted major strategic infrastructure projects currently under implementation in transport, water, energy, and other sectors, citing their significance in achieving economic goals and attracting foreign investment, according to Petra. Hassan said employee efficiency remains the primary performance metric, emphasising ongoing efforts to accelerate digital transformation, upgrade institutional culture, and implement training programmes, all designed to improve public service delivery. The prime minister reaffirmed the government's commitment to political modernisation, particularly through reforms to the Local Administration Law. 'We have initiated dialogue and will expand its scope,' he said, emphasizing that better municipal governance is essential to addressing challenges such as debt and weak services, Petra reported. 'Our goal is to maintain the path of democracy and reform while striking a balance between performance improvement and stronger governance,' he added. Khasawneh praised government outreach efforts, including visits to governorates, which he said reflect the Royal vision of modernisation across economic, political, and administrative tracks. 'These efforts noted, are especially important amid ongoing economic challenges.'

Jordan: Arab countries receive 44% of Zarqa's exports in H1 2025
AMMAN — President of the Zarqa Chamber of Industry (ZCI) Fares Hammoudeh said on Tuesday that the Arab countries topped the list of importers of industrial products in Zarqa during the first half of this year with a share of 44 per cent of the total exports. The Arab countries' imports of ZCI reached $294 million in the January-June period of 2025, compared with $254.6 million during the same period of 2024, with a growth rate of 15 per cent, the Jordan News Agency, Petra, reported. This progress reflects "qualitative" leaps in the volume of trade exchange with a number of Arab countries, led by Saudi Arabia, Iraq and Algeria, ZCI said in a statement, noting that Saudi Arabia and Iraq accounted for 77 per cent of exports for Arab markets. Iraq's share of exports reached $113.1 million, ranking first in the Arab world, with a growth rate of 32 per cent compared with $85.4 million the previous year, while exports to Saudi Arabia recorded an increase of 35 per cent to $82.3 million, compared with $61 million in the same period of 2024. Exports to Algeria witnessed an "exceptional" growth of 266 per cent, reaching $32.9 million compared with only $9 million in the first half of last year, while the percentage of exports to Syria jumped by 57 per cent to $8.5 million, compared with $5.4 million in the same period. Hammoudeh pointed out that the total value of Zarqa's exports for the first half of this year reached $666.2 million, achieving a slight increase of 1 per cent compared with $661 million during the same period of 2024. At the international level, North America ranked second after the Arab countries, accounting for 40.8 per cent of the total exports with a value of $272.1 million. The value of exports to non-Arab Asian countries amounted to about $42.6 million, marking an increase of 3 per cent from last year, while the EU countries recorded a decline in imports from Zarqa by 33 per cent to only $20 million, compared with $29.7 million in the same period of 2024. With regard to sectorial performance, Hammoudeh said that the leather and knitting industries sector maintained its lead, with a value of $291.3 million, a decrease of 15 per cent compared with last year. The food, catering, agricultural and livestock industries sector ranked second with $125.4 million, with a growth rate of 2 per cent, followed by the construction industries sector with $70.5 million, recording a jump of 51 per cent. The engineering, electrical and information technology industries came fourth with exports of $65.3 million, achieving 'strong' growth of 52 per cent, followed by the chemical and cosmetics industries sector with a value of $37 million, up by 11 per cent from last year. With regard to the performance of the rest of the industrial sectors, the exports of the packaging, paper, cardboard and office supplies sector amounted to $28.3 million. The therapeutic industries and medical supplies sector amounted to $27.4 million, the plastic and rubber industries sector amounted to $18.9 million, while the exports of the wood and furniture industries sector amounted to $1.6 million.

Oil prices rise as Iran suspends cooperation with UN nuclear watchdog
Oil futures edged up on Wednesday as Iran suspended cooperation with the U.N. nuclear watchdog and markets weighed expectations of more supply from major producers next month while the U.S. dollar softened further. Brent crude added 56 cents, or 0.8%, to $67.67 a barrel at 0934 GMT, while U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude rose 53 cents, or 0.8%, at $65.98 a barrel. Brent has traded between a high of $69.05 a barrel and low of $66.34 since June 25, as concerns of supply disruptions in the Middle East producing region have ebbed following the ceasefire between Iran and Israel. Iran put into effect a law on Wednesday that stipulates that any future inspection of its nuclear sites by the International Atomic Energy Agency needs approval by Tehran's Supreme National Security Council. The country has accusing the institution of siding with Western countries and providing a justification for Israel's air strikes "The market is pricing in some geopolitical risk premium from Iran's move on the IAEA," said Giovanni Staunovo, commodity analyst at UBS. "But this is about sentiment, there are no disruptions to oil." Planned supply increases by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and its allies including Russia, know as OPEC+, appear already priced in by investors and are unlikely to catch markets off-guard again imminently, said Phillip Nova senior market analyst Priyanka Sachdeva. Four OPEC+ sources told Reuters last week the group plans to raise output by 411,000 barrels per day next month when it meets on July 6, a similar amount to hikes agreed for May, June and July. "We are all talking about additional supply coming to the market, but the supply has not really hit the market," Staunovo said. "Probably because it's being consumed domestically." Saudi Arabia lifted shipments in June by 450,000 bpd from May, according to data from Kpler, its highest in more than a year. However, overall OPEC+ exports are relatively flat to slightly down since March, Staunovo said. He expects this to persist over the summer as hot weather drives higher energy demand. The greenback continued to weaken, falling to a 3-1/2-year low against major peers earlier on Wednesday. A weaker dollar tends to support oil prices, as it could boost demand for buyers paying in other currencies. U.S. non-farm payrolls data due on Thursday will shape expectations around the depth and timing of interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve in the second half of this year, said Tony Sycamore, analyst at IG. Lower interest rates could spur economic activity which would in turn boost oil demand. Official U.S. oil stockpile data from the Energy Information Administration is due Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. ET. American Petroleum Institute data late on Tuesday showed U.S. crude oil inventories rose by 680,000 barrels in the past week at a time when stockpiles typically draw amid the summer demand season, sources said.
