Will demerit system change driver behaviour?
It's a points-based system used to track and penalise traffic violations.
Rack up enough points for traffic offenses, and you could have your licence suspended or even disqualified.
On the South African Morning soapbox, we are asking if you think this system will prompt drivers to improve their road behaviour.

UFC champ Dricus Du Plessis reveals best opponent he's faced: 'One hell of a fight'
UFC middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis has fought some tough competition throughout his tenure with the promotion, but one opponent especially stands out to him. Du Plessis (23-2 MMA, 9-0 UFC) endured two hard-fought battles with Sean Strickland, but it was his recent title defense against Israel Adesanya at UFC 305 that hit different. Du Plessis submitted Adesanya in Round 4 after a back-and-forth battle. "My toughest opponent to date, well that's a very open-ended question because there were fights that were the hardest for me," Du Plessis said in an interview with Betway South Africa. "I have to say probably Adesanya was the best guy I faced in his specific area, probably the fight I was most nervous for just in terms of how good he is. "He can catch you with anything, anytime. All the time I spent looking up to him and studying him because he was the benchmark. Knowing what he's capable of, I think he's the best guy I've faced and obviously if you watch that fight, it was one hell of a fight. It was a tough night at the office for both of us." Du Plessis will look to notch his third title defense when he takes on Khamzat Chimaev (14-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) in the UFC 319 headliner on Aug. 16 at United Center in Chicago (ESPN+ pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+). The South African champ has finished all but two opponents in his career. "When you go on pure toughness, you have to go with either Brad Tavares or Sean Strickland," Du Plessis continued. "Just the amount of damage they were able to take and just keep going."

Italy fines Shein for misleading green claims
Italy's competition watchdog said Monday it has fined the company responsible for Shein's websites in Europe one million euros ($1.15 million) for false and confusing claims about the e-commerce giant's efforts to be environmentally "green". The AGCM watchdog accuses the China-founded fast-fashion colossal of having "adopted a misleading communication strategy regarding the characteristics and environmental impact of its clothing products". The fine was imposed on Infinite Styles Services Co Ltd, the company responsible for managing Shein's product trading websites in Europe, the watchdog said in a statement. The AGCM accused it of "misleading and/or deceptive environmental messages and claims — in the promotion and sale of Shein-branded clothing products". These were "in some instances, vague, generic, and/or overly emphatic, and in others, misleading or omissive". In particular, claims about the recyclability of products "were found to be either false or at least confusing", it said. Consumers could easily be led to believe Shein products were made exclusively from sustainable materials and fully recyclable, "a statement which, given the fibres used and current recycling systems, does not reflect reality". The AGCM also took issue with the retailer's claims it would reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent by 2030 and reach zero emissions by 2050. These "vague" pledges by a company which has seen phenomenal growth in recent years were "contradicted by an actual increase in Shein's greenhouse gas emissions in 2023 and 2024", it said. Environmentalists have long warned of the damage wreaked by the fast-fashion sector's wasteful trend of mass producing low-cost clothes that are quickly thrown away. Fast fashion uses up massive amounts of water, produces hazardous chemicals and clogs up landfills in poor countries with textile waste, while also generating greenhouse gases in production, transport and disposal. Shein did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Shein, founded in China, and its rival Temu have aggressively expanded worldwide as online shopping has surged after the COVID pandemic. They have been accused of exploiting tax loopholes by exporting China-made products in small quantities to avoid higher duties. Shein will open its pop-up store from August 2-11 as an "exhibition space" for customers to try on trendy fashion and lifestyle products and order them online at a discount, the company said in its South African Instagram post. Local influencers were tapped for a pre-opening marketing campaign.

Snow falls over parts of the country as a cold front moves in
Parts of the Eastern Cape will experience light snow on Wednesday, 6 August, as a cold front pushes across the interior of South Africa. Snowfall is expected in the province's northwestern and mountainous regions. Forecaster Odirile Modipa confirmed the snowfall, saying, 'Light snow has been observed over the northern parts of the Eastern Cape and is expected to continue into tomorrow.' The cold front also triggered scattered showers and thunderstorms across the Free State, Northern Cape, and Western Cape. Severe weather alerts have been issued, including a yellow level 1 warning for damaging waves along the southern coastline. 'Severe thunderstorms are likely in the central interior, including parts of the Northern Cape and Free State,' said Modipa. She added that these could bring strong winds and hail. Sutherland, known for its cold weather, recorded an overnight minimum of -2°C. Maximum temperatures in the region remain below 10°C, with Cape Town reaching only 15°C and East London at 16°C.
