Two Lake Forest High School 2025 graduates named National Merit Scholars
Elizabeth W. Silvay and Albert Jie received the prestigious honor in the spring when they were completing their senior year.
Silvay was one of 2,500 nationwide students receiving a National Merit Scholarship, selected from a group of 15,000 finalists. The program honors students for their academic record and potential for success in college studies.
The honorees receive $2,500 scholarships, according to LFHS.
Silvay was a member of the LFHS Math Team, French Club and pursued and tennis, track and field and was selected for the 2025 Illinois Ski Team at the Western High School Championship.
Her next academic step is Dartmouth College intending to focus her studies on chemical engineering, according to a LFHS statement.
Separately, Jie was one of about 830 high school obtaining a corporate-sponsored award via the 70th Annual National Merit Scholarship Program. These scholarships go to students meeting specific academic and personal criteria set by the sponsor.
Jie received a corporate-sponsored National Merit Pfizer Inc. Scholarship.
At LFHS, Jie was a member of the Swim Team and Math Team. He now plans to attend Northwestern University and major in economics, according to the school.
LFHS held its graduation ceremony for the Class of 2025 on June 7.

Another section of Lake Forest's Deerpath Road being closed to traffic for renovation in August
The massive ongoing renovation in downtown Lake Forest will enter a new phase on August 7, when the entire intersection of Deerpath and Western is set to be closed to vehicles for more than two weeks. As part of the Deerpath rehabilitation, crews are expected to completely block off vehicular access at the busy intersection, allowing for installation of new storm sewers and upgraded crosswalks in an overall effort to improve safety and enhance drainage, according to the city. 'In order to build those crosswalks and minimize the length of the disruption, it was basically decided to do all of the crosswalks at once. By the time you remove all of the crosswalks and pour back concrete, it is about two weeks,' City Engineer Byron Kutz said at a July City Council meeting. With the intersection closed, detours will be set up directing drivers to the adjacent streets of Illinois, Green Bay, and Westminster Roads. The city states pedestrian traffic will remain open and parking will remain available on Western, both north and south of the intersection. The intersection closure is scheduled from August 7 through August 24, after the Lake Forest Day festivities of August 5 and 6 and ahead of the start of the 2025-26 school year for the two local public school districts. (The first day of classes for both District 67 and Lake Forest High School is August 27.) City officials believe many residents may be out of town at the time. 'Potentially, the city is a little quieter,' Kutz said. The closure represents the latest chapter of the continuing rehabilitation of Deerpath, which began shortly after the first of the year. The city believes the changes will enhance the area's streetscape and appearance upon completion. However, the lengthy project has frustrated many downtown business owners as the construction has severely limited customer access to their stores. The Deerpath and Western closure is likely to be a challenge for Rosati's Pizza at the southwest corner of the intersection. However, owner Rich Hanson preferred to look at the streetscape enhancements as a whole. 'Sometimes you have to rip the bandage off,' he said. 'It might be a painful for a while but we are excited to see the entire renovation. It will be gorgeous.' City spokeswoman Dana Olson said both the Deerpath and the corresponding overhaul of a section of Bank Lane, are both scheduled to be completed by the end of October.

New scholarship opportunity offers affordable option for Mississippi college students to earn degree
University of Southern Mississippi and Pearl River Community College announced Wednesday a new coastal pathways scholarship that will give graduates of the two-year school a way to complete their bachelor's degree at USM. The collaboration announced at USM's Gulf Park campus in Long Beach is part of a regional initiative to boost education access and add job opportunities to the Mississippi Gulf Coast region. In May, USM held a similar event with Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. The partnership with the community colleges is also part of a larger effort to boost USM's enrollment, which continues to decline with only 564 students enrolled in the Gulf Park campus last fall, according to data from the school's Office of Institutional Research. 'This scholarship pathway represents more than just financial support — it's about creating opportunities for student success,' Joe Paul, president of USM, said in a press statement. 'By partnering with Pearl River Community College, we're building a direct and affordable route for students to continue their education and make meaningful contributions to our coastal communities.' The scholarship offers $5,000 annually to qualified PRCC transfer students, according to the press release. To qualify for the coastal scholarship students must meet the following criteria: Students must also enroll in at least 15 credit hours per semester, including a minimum of nine credit hours of face-to-face instruction on the Gulf Park campus, and maintain a 2.5 GPA to remain eligible. 'These pathways not only open doors for individual students but also have a significant economic impact on our coastal communities,' Adam Breerwood, president of PRCC, said in a statement.
