Local body elections: scrutiny of EVMs begins in Ernakulam

The Hindu25-07-2025
Preparatory works ahead of the forthcoming local body elections have started in Ernakulam district as the first round of scrutiny of the electronic voting machines (EVMs) began on Friday (July 25, 2025).
District Collector N.S.K. Umesh monitored the scrutiny process held at the Usha Tourist Home here. The representatives of recognised political parties can watch the one-month-long work. The officials will verify the functioning of the control and ballot units as part of the directive issued by the State Election Commission to ensure the conduct of the local body elections in a proper and transparent manner.
The scrutiny is being held by the Department of Revenue in association with the Department of Local Self-Government. Around 11,760 ballot units and 4,700 control units will be checked as part of the process. The units were stored in safe and secure store rooms. A dummy voting process will be held to ensure that the ballot and control units are working without any hiccups. After the completion of the scrutiny, the electronic voting machines will be sealed and kept back in the store rooms.
The State Election Commission has directed that the first phase of scrutiny of the voting machines has to be completed before August 25. Around 120 officials from the Revenue and Local Self-Government departments were involved in the work. Nearly 60 officials will be involved in the scrutiny at a time. The services of the officials of Electronic Corporation of India, which manufactured the electronic voting machines, will be available at the scrutiny hall to rectify technical snags.

BJP, Congress claim majority in Uttarakhand panchayat polls

Dehradun, Aug 1 (UNI) As counting for the three-tier panchayat polls in Uttarakhand ended, both the ruling BJP and main opposition Congress claimed victories today. Congress and BJP stated that they will have majority in the 89 Block and 12 District Panchayat bodies for which elections were held. Reacting on the results declared by the State Election Commission, BJP said that majority of the candidates supported by it have won in 7,499 village panchayats, 89 Kshetra Panchayats and 12 district panchayats for which elections were held in two phases in July. "Large number of BJP supported candidates have won in the recently concluded polls for village panchayat heads, Kshetra Panchayat members and District Panchayat members in the state. I thank people of Uttarakhand for coming out in large numbers and cast their franchise with 70 percent polling in the monsoon," said Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami. "Now the elected representatives must work hard to realise the goal of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to make India a developed nation," he added. "BJP-backed candidates have registered huge wins in elections for Gram Pradhan and District Panchayat members. It's confirmed that BJP will form its boards in all 89 blocks and elect its presidents in all 12 district Panchayats. This victory is proof of the BJP's organisational strength and people's trust in it. Congress should now introspect instead of making allegations," said state BJP president Mahendra Bhatt. BJP's state media in-charge Manveer Chauhan stated that the victory of party workers as district panchayat members, kshetra panchayat members, village pradhans and village panchayat ward members is evidence of the enthusiasm among the electorate to support the BJP. Size of BJP supported candidates' victories will ensure that party wins all 12 districts panchayat presidentship and majority of the 89 kshetra panchahayat headships in coming days, he said. On the other hand Congress party too was not behind in claiming victories of the candidates supported by it in all three tiers of panchayat bodies. State Congress president Karan Mahra said "Results are proof of the massive public support for the Congress supported candidates in panchayat polls. Panchayat poll electorates have given clear majority to the Congress party in all three categories of panchayat bodies. People have voted against the BJP and the malpractices of the State Election Commission. BJP candidates lost even at places considered to be strongholds of its senior leaders and the party is distributing sweets." "While we are still assessing the village panchayats won by our candidates. Congress supported nominees have won 138 of 198 district panchayat constituencies contested by them. Besides this more than half of the kshetra panchayat bodies have also been won by the Congress supported and independent candidates. Claims made by the BJP are false. Ruling party has been dealt a massive blow in panchayat polls," said the Congress senior leader and state vice president Suryakant Dhasmana. Panchayat polls in Uttarakhand were held for 7,499 village panchayat pradhans, 2,974 members of 89 Kshetra Panchayats(BDCs) and 358 constituencies of 12 districts panchayats except Haridwar in two phases on July 24 and July 28. Counting was held on July 31, but State Election Commission couldn't provide partywise details of the poll outcome as voting was not held on party symbols. However, presidential elections in Kshetra and District Panchayats will be held on party symbols in coming days. Electorate will be constituted of newly elected members of these panchayat bodies. Trump calls Indian, Russian economies 'dead economies'. Announces trade deal with Pak

New Delhi, July 31 (UNI) Day after announcing 25 percent tariff with ''penalty'' against India for buying military equipment and energy from Russia, US President Donald Trump today said a trade deal with Pakistan had been concluded and both countries (India and Russia) could take their ''dead economies'' down together. He said the US had just concluded a trade deal with Pakistan where Pakistan and US could work together on developing their massive oil reserves and may be they (Pakistan) will sell their oil to India. ''We have just concluded a deal with the country of Pakistan whereby Pakistan and the United States will work together on developing their massive oil reserves. We are in the process of choosing the oil company that will lead this partnership. Who knows may be they'll be selling oil to India some day.'' He said he does not care what India does with Russia. ''They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care,'' he said in a series of tweets on his social media platform. President Trump had yesterday announced on Truth Social that 25 per cent tariff would be imposed on India along with ''penalty'' from August one for buying military equipment and energy from Russia. ''All things are not good! India will therefore be paying a tariff of 25 percent plus a penalty starting August one,'' he said. Describing India as ''our friend,'' he said US had done relatively little business with India because their (India's) tariffs are too high. Commenting on Trump's tariffs an official spokesman here said the Government attaches utmost importance to protecting and promoting the welfare of our farmers, entrepreneurs and MSMEs and will take all necessary steps to secure our national interest. ''The Government will take all steps necessary to secure our national interest, as has been the case with other trade agreements including the latest Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement with the UK,'' the spokesman said. He said the Government had taken note of the statement by the US President on bilateral trade. The Government is studying its implications. The spokesman said India and the US have been engaged in negotiations on concluding a fair, balanced and mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement over the last few months and India remains committed to that objective. Trump said he is ''very busy'' in the White House working on Trade Deals and he had spoken to the leaders of many countries all of whom wanted make the United States ''Extremely Happy.'' In another tweet he said the US has a ''massive trade deficit with India.'' The US had done very little business with India, their tariffs are too high among the highest in the world. ''Russia and the US do almost no business together. Let's keep it that way,'' he said. UNI RB 1521

Opposition MPs write to Om Birla, seek special discussion on Bihar's SIR

Leaders of several Opposition parties, including Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, on Friday wrote to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, urging him to schedule a special discussion on the ongoing voter list revision in Bihar without any further delay. In their letter to Birla, the Opposition MPs expressed deep concern over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar, especially a few months before the state assembly elections. The signatories to the letter included Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Gandhi, Congress' Deputy Leader in the House Gaurav Gogoi, DMK's TR Baalu, NCP (SP)'s Supriya Sule, RSP's N K Premachandran, SP's Lalji Verma, TMC's Kakoli Ghose Dastidar, Shiv Sena (UBT)'s Arvind Savant and RJD's Abhay Kumar. "We, the undersigned Members of Parliament representing various Opposition parties, wish to express our deep concern over the ongoing voter list revision in Bihar, especially a few months before the state assembly elections," the opposition MPs said in their letter. "This is unprecedented. The Election Commission of India has indicated that similar exercises will soon be undertaken across the country. Given the widespread apprehension about the transparency, timing, and intent of this process, the matter requires the urgent attention of the House," they said. The Opposition has consistently raised this issue since the start of the current session, the MPs said. "It was reiterated in several interactions with the Government, including the All-Party Meeting held on Sunday, July 20. While the Government has stated its willingness to discuss all issues, including this one, no date has yet been fixed for such a discussion," the letter said. The revision of electoral rolls has direct implications on the right to vote and the conduct of free and fair elections, the opposition MPs said. "A special discussion in the Lok Sabha will allow Members to seek clarity and ensure transparency and accountability. We, therefore, urge you to schedule a special discussion on the ongoing voter roll revision without any further delay," they said in their letter to Birla. The opposition has been protesting in both Houses of Parliament against the SIR, alleging the EC's exercise was aimed at "disenfranchising voters" in Bihar ahead of the Assembly elections. They have been demanding a discussion on the issue in both Houses.
