Atlanta releases Sonic ID for 2026 FIFA World Cup
Why it matters: It's been 30 years since Outkast's André 3000 told the music industry the South "got something to say," and the tune crafted by Grammy-winning songwriter and producer Dallas Austin proves the Atlanta sound still influences everything.
Driving the news: Atlanta released a nearly two-minute hype song — dubbed by FIFA as a Sonic ID — on Thursday that's available to stream on several platforms.
Each of the host cities was tasked with remixing FIFA's official theme for the 2026 World Cup to create its own unique sound.
How it sounds: FIFA's original song is heavy on European house and electronic dance rhythms, but Austin's remix overlays that with Atlanta's signature drum line and hip-hop sound.
It will be shared by the city on social media, by the Host Committee, during "key moments" leading up to next year's final match and on occasion by Atlanta United, said Emilie Leveille, senior communications and media relations specialist for AMB Sports and Entertainment.
What they're saying: Austin said he wanted the track to feature a drum line,
elements of hip-hop and pop music and "that spirit and the culture of Atlanta."
He said it took months for him to find the perfect beat and sound that represents Atlanta.
"I just wanted to make it something that was incredible and felt like us," he said during Thursday's press conference unveiling the track.
Mayor Andre Dickens said he loved the song "right off the bat."
"I heard all the elements the first time, and I was ... sold the minute I heard it," he said. "It was really something that celebrated Atlanta culture."
What's next: Atlanta will host eight matches, including group matches on June 15, 18, 21, 24 and 27, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.
The city will also host a knockout round on July 1, a Round of 16 match on July 7 and a July 15 semifinal.
The 2026 World Cup marks the first time in more than 20 years that the tournament will be played in more than one country.

England target series win over India and World Cup momentum
Off-spinner Charlie Dean is hoping a one-day international series victory over India would take England into the World Cup on a high. Dean and her team-mates head into Tuesday's third match at Chester-le-Street having avenged their four-wicket defeat at Southampton with an eight-wicket victory in a rain-affected clash at Lord's on Saturday to set up a decider in the north-east. A win would make amends for the 3-2 T20 series defeat by the Indians which preceded the 50-over encounters and provide a boost as Charlotte Edwards and her players work towards this Autumn's World Cup campaign in India and Sri Lanka. Dean said: 'It is massively important. We are taking every game as it comes, but ultimately we want to win the series. It will put us with great momentum into the World Cup. 'We've still got a lot of time and a lot of cricket before then, but hopefully it will only help us.' England chased down a revised total of 115 from 24 overs at headquarters to gain a foothold in the series, but they were also able to take positives from their defeat in the opening game when after being reduced to 97 for four, Sophia Dunkley's 83 and a half-century from Alice Davidson-Richards helped them post 258 for six. A concert in Italy by Russian conductor Gergiev is canceled after protests
ROME (AP) — A concert by Russian conductor Valery Gergiev has been canceled, organizers in Italy announced Monday, following protests against giving the stage to the conductor who has been largely barred from European venues for failing to condemn Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Gergiev had been invited to conduct during a summer festival at the Royal Palace of Caserta near Naples next Sunday. The regional governor, Vincenzo de Luca, had defended the invitation, saying that 'the logic of preclusion … does not help peace.'' The invitation had been widely criticized by human rights activists, Russian opposition figures and European parliamentarians. Milan's La Scala was the first theater in the West to cut off relations with Gergiev, who was engaged at the theater when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, after he failed to respond to Milan Mayor Giuseppe Sala's appeal to speak out against the war.
