Top talent shines at Pembrokeshire Boccia Tournament

SOME of Pembrokeshire's most talented young athletes took part in the annual Secondary School Boccia Tournament last month, showcasing impressive skills in the inclusive Paralympic sport.
Boccia, a precision ball game similar to bowls, is designed for athletes with physical disabilities and requires competitors to aim their ball as close as possible to a target 'jack' ball.
The tournament, sponsored by Valero, was held in the sports hall at Haverfordwest High VC School on Tuesday, April 29.
A total of 20 teams from schools across the county took part, including Haverfordwest High, Ysgol Bro Gwaun, Milford Haven School, Ysgol Bro Preseli, Ysgol Harri Tudur, and Portfield School.
Matches were overseen by volunteers from Saundersfoot Rotary's Tenderfoot Disability Sports group, Welsh international Boccia player Sian Jones, and Young Ambassadors from Haverfordwest High.
After a day of closely contested matches and high-quality play, it was Ysgol Harri Tudur Team 1 who emerged victorious.
Dan Bellis of Sport Pembrokeshire said: 'It was fantastic to see so many teams and pupils taking part in such an inclusive activity. A great time was had by all.
'Big thanks to Valero for sponsoring the event, and to all the volunteers and Young Ambassadors for umpiring and scoring the games. A big well done to everyone who took part and made the tournament such a success.'

Jonny Clayton reveals emotive message from his wife that reignited his darting drive

Welsh star has been wonderful at Winter Gardens and just two games from grabbing World Matchplay glory Jonny Clayton has revealed the emotive family message which has reignited his darting drive. ‌ The Welsh star is into the semi-finals of the Betfred World Matchplay with the hunger back and the desire to rejoin the elite. ‌ Clayton suffered a career lull after the passing of his father John a couple of years and had a period when he simply had no interest in the game as it him him hard. ‌ But the 50-year-old is showing his flair again and could cap the stunning revival with a magical success in the Winter Gardens. Clayton said: 'I don't think I've hit top gear. I think I have produced better darts than I have done this week, but I'm back on the practise board, that's something I haven't done for probably a year and a half. We all know two years ago with the family with dad passing, darts was nowhere near. 'I just didn't want to play. But I've got a smile back on my face, I'm trying hard again, I'm back on the practise board. I've got two kids that want me to do well. My wife is like: John, dad has gone, but you can still make a name for yourself and that is massive, there's belief from elsewhere. ‌ 'I just want to do well. I want to be back. I want to be one of the elite players, I want to be back in the Premier League. When you are in there, you've done something right and that's that's where I belong. 'Maybe I felt down on darts and whatever, but I got the hunger back. I want to be one of the best, I really do. it hurts that I'm from world number five to nine, obviously with the money off the rankings here, but I'm climbing back up slowly and I want to be with it with the elite. 'When you're there people respect you a little bit more than what they do if you refer that further down the rankings. If you're not playing well, no matter where you are in the rankings, people pick up on that. But if you're playing well, that might be a step in the right direction and people are thinking: I have to play well against him.' An al-Wales final remains a possibility with Gerywn Price surging in the opposite side of the draw. Clayton faces resurgent James Wade in the last-four with The Machine purring and going into the game claiming he's amonst the the best players to ever walk the planet in the past 20 years. The Ferret said: '100 per cent. Look at his records. What is he, the third best dart player on earth? The fourth? 'What he's done you can't take that away from him. That guy has done everything. I think to myself: I've got a massive game, he's playing really well, he's got all the experience. I've got some but nothing compared to James. 'We practise a lot together me and James and, you watch him, he's hungry again. James being hungry is a different kettle of fish. He's fantastic.'

Pricey Wrexham signing 'just like Jack Wilshere' as ex-team-mates' comments speak volumes

Wrexham have signed a Premier League midfielder who has been compared to Jack Wilshere in a deal worth a reported £5million as they prepare for life in the Championship Wrexham have signed a new player who has been highly praised by his former team-mates and managers. The Red Dragons swooped to bring in Lewis O'Brien from Nottingham Forest on Thursday in a deal reportedly worth up to £5million. ‌ The Welsh side fended off interest from other Championship clubs to secure the midfielder's signature on a three-year contract, becoming their sixth summer arrival. The 26-year-old impressed on loan in the second tier with Swansea City during the second half of last season after previously spending time with Los Angeles FC in the MLS. ‌ O'Brien said he was "absolutely buzzing" to join Wrexham after the deal was announced. Such are his talents that he was even compared to ex- England and Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere by one of his colleagues at Forest. ‌ Defender Moussa Niakhate drew the parallels in a post on Instagram after O'Brien delivered a man-of-the-match performance in a 1-0 victory over West Ham shortly after arriving at the club in 2022. His attributes were also hailed by former Forest boss Steve Cooper. "Lewis is a great ball carrier, he has a good engine and is great technically. He is tactically good as well," said Cooper after O'Brien joined. "Lewis is driven to do well. I had a good conversation with him about that and it is important to us. "We can get even more out of him, which is the exciting bit. I had a positive talk with [Ryan] Yatesy about him because they had a few good ding-dongs. There is a real mutual respect between them." O'Brien's former Bradford team-mate Adam Chicksen, who now plays for Notts County, is another who has praised his strengths. Speaking to The Athletic in 2022, Chicksen said: "His attitude had a really good impact on the team. "He was never arrogant, he was humble and he never stopped listening, even when he had established himself as an important figure. He was so good at being in the right position; he would break lines and get into dangerous areas. ‌ "He was always on the move. He could strike a ball really, really well. He was a smart, intelligent player. His passing was so clean, so smooth. There was never any bobble. You never worried about getting a ball from him. He had a bit of everything." Despite his qualities, O'Brien failed to make an impact at Forest and leaves the City Ground after only featuring on 17 occasions for the club. He made 16 appearances for Swansea on loan last season after arriving during the January transfer window. ‌ He played an important part as they secured a mid-table finish in the Championship after previously flirting with relegation. Speaking after signing for Wrexham, O'Brien said: "I'm absolutely buzzing. "It's been a long time coming, but to be here is great. The last couple of years has been a whirlwind for me and my family, but to sign a long-term contract and find somewhere I can call home is a great feeling. ‌ "After speaking to everyone here, it's a club with a lot of ambition. I want to be part of that journey, and take Wrexham to where they want to be." Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson said: "I'm delighted to welcome Lewis to the club. He's a player with a lot of experience at this level and will be a great addition to the group. We're looking forward to working with him." Ryan Reynolds and Wrexham have same golden transfer rule as Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta

A Wrexham director has lifted the lid on manager Phil Parkinson's stringent player recruitment strategy, which closely mirrors Mikel Arteta's approach at Arsenal Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has a golden rule when signing new players which echoes the approach taken by Arsenal's Mikel Arteta. The former Sunderland and Bradford manager has delivered unprecedented success since taking charge of the Welsh side in July 2021. ‌ Backed by the money of Hollwood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, Parkinson has achieved three successive promotions, lifting the Red Dragons from the National League to the Championship. Wrexham 's critics often use their riches as a reason to pour cold water on their accomplishments. ‌ However, club director Shaun Harvey has now shone a light on the extensive homework Parkinson does before bringing in new recruits. Similar to the strict non-negotiables Arteta has set out in relation to players' personalities at Arsenal, Wrexham have a firm "no d*******s" policy. ‌ Harvey lifted the lid on the secret to the club's tried and tested methods in the transfer market while appearing on ex-Wrexham and Manchester United goalkeeper Ben Foster 's Fozcast podcast. "We still have what most people would recognise as a more traditional model, where the manager is all things," said the former EFL chief executive. "He helps recruit players, identify players, and ultimately, from a footballing perspective, Phil has the ultimate sign off. "It's been couched around Wrexham as Phil's d******* test. Is he going to fit in, or is he going to upset the dressing room culture? The dressing room culture plays such a big part in the success of any team so background checks will be done. Some will be good, some will be bad. "The bad ones, you don't take forward and you leave them on one side. The best player signings are those that have probably been discussed that little bit more openly with a group of people who've got no vested interest other than the success of the football club." Wrexham have so far made six signings this summer, initially bringing in Plymouth striker Ryan Hardie, Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward and Empoli left-back Liberato Cacace in the months since gaining promotion from League One. They have also added Bolton captain George Thomason, former Sheffield Wednesday forward Josh Windass and Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O'Brien to their ranks this week. ‌ Parkinson's stringent focus on prioritising the right type of character is very similar to Arteta's ethos at Arsenal. The Spaniard has explained the high demands he sets for incoming players on several occasions. Speaking to Amazon Prime Sport Video in 2022, he said: "Around the club, we have to make a lot of good decisions and when we talk about non-negotiables, it's about the values that have to be installed. If someone is going to damage those values and environment, they should not be part of the club. ‌ "When we set the objectives, we made a compromise that only the best people and the best players are going to come through this door. And when you cannot recruit that, it's better not to recruit." Expanding further on his requirements, Arteta told the Men in Blazers podcast: "I will try to recruit players that we can all feel that they are part of us, and they are able to transmit the values and the ideas that we have at the club. "First of all they have to love the game, and someone that loves winning. They need to love the club, so they need to be willing to join us for the right reasons, and then characters that can complement what we already have and provide what we don't have."
