Pretoria prosecutor and constable in the docks for extorting R1.6m
A suspended prosecutor and a Wierdabrug police constable who allegedly demanded payment of R1.6-million in exchange for a businessman's release were granted bail on July 30 by the Pretoria Magistrate's Court.
The court granted bail to the pair after they were charged with extortion.
Advocate Avinash Ramapararat (45), the suspended prosecutor based at the Pretoria Specialised Commercial Crimes Unit (SCCU), and Constable Abdul Haig Shaik (37), a police officer stationed at Wierdabrug Police Station, were each granted R5 000 bail.
According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) Gauteng spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana, in February 2024, Shaik allegedly contacted the businessman and requested that he report to the Wierdabrug Police Station regarding a fraud and theft case opened by Agynt Commodities.
Mahanjana said the case was related to a coal transaction between Agynt and the businessman's company in 2023.
Upon arrival, the businessman was arrested by Shaik and placed in a holding cell. While in custody, the two accused allegedly demanded payment of R1.6-million in exchange for the businessman's release.
She said the businessman paid the money and was later released.
Mahanjana said that after a few months had passed, the businessman made a follow-up on the case, and was told the case number given to him was unrelated to his matter.
'He then reported the incident to the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, which led to the arrest of both accused on July 25.'
Mahanjana said: 'During their bail application, the State did not oppose bail, as both accused had co-operated with the investigation, were not deemed flight risks, and had confirmed residential addresses.
'In addition to the current matter, the pair also face separate charges of extortion and corruption in a case before the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court.'
Mahanjana said the court postponed the matter to October 24 for the Director of Public Prosecutions' decision, while the separate matter will return to court on October 27 for disclosure.
She said the NPA is committed to fighting crime, including within its ranks.
She said Ramapararat was placed on suspension pending finalisation of internal disciplinary processes.

EMPD and Saps officers to appear in court for corruption and theft
The officers allegedly raided a shop, seized cigarettes and took cash. At least ten members of the South African Police Services (Saps) and the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police department (EMPD) are expected to make their first court appearance on Tuesday. The officers are expected to appear at the Germiston Magistrate's Court on allegations of corruption and theft. 'The members were arrested today [Monday] while on duty and will appear before the court tomorrow. All arrested officers are Constables and one Sergeant, and are detained at the Germiston Police Station.' Last month, two Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) officers were arrested on charges of extortion and corruption. The arrests followed a swift probe initiated by a public complaint. JMPD corruption JMPD spokesperson Xolani Fihla said they received a distress call on Saturday from a concerned citizen who reported being extorted by officers. Fihla said the operation involved a coordinated effort from the JMPD's Internal Affairs Unit, which effected the arrests. 'The complainant alleged that officers demanded R8 000 after accusing their company driver of fleeing an accident scene. Acting on the provided vehicle registration, JMPD Internal Affairs quickly tracked the vehicle to a BP Garage in Parktown, where three officers were located.' 'A search of the officers and their vehicle uncovered R5,340 from two male officers, much of which could not be accounted for and was suspected to be illicitly obtained. Some of the money was found concealed within the vehicle. The two male officers were immediately detained at Jeppe SAPS on charges of extortion and corruption,' Fihla said. Security officer sentenced to life for raping teen in Roodepoort
The sentence comes as country commemorates women's month. A 26-year-old security officer tasked with the protection of a residential complex has been sentenced to life in prison for the rape of a 14-year-old girl in Roodepoort, west of Johannesburg. The sentence comes as the country commemorates Women's Month. Mpho Antonio Lebona appeared in the Roodepoort Magistrates' Court, where the sentence was handed down. The teen was raped in Florida in January 2021. Trial National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane said during the trial, evidence showed the devastating impact of the crime, with the victim providing a detailed and harrowing account of the assault. 'The accused admitted to being with the victim but claimed their interaction was consensual. However, the Magistrate, Thelma Simpson, dismissed his testimony as entirely false and improbable, convicting him of rape, which led to the subsequent sentence.' Regional Court Prosecutor Claude Payne presented a Victim Impact Statement from the girl and her mother, which highlighted the trauma, particularly the brutal loss of the victim's virginity. 'Citing the nature of the crime against a child, the Magistrate deemed life imprisonment the only befitting sentence, reflecting the court's commitment to justice for such heinous acts,' Mjonondwane said. Farm murder accused says he was forced to feed women's bodies to pigs
During the brief proceedings, a supervisor on the farm turned state witness. One of the three men accused of killing two women and throwing their bodies in a pigsty in Limpopo has told the court he was forced to feed their bodies to pigs. Pig farmer Zackariah Olivier, his co-accused Rudolph de Wet, and Zimbabwean national William Musoro returned to the Polokwane High Court on Monday. Trial National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) regional spokesperson Mashudu Malabi said the murder case was postponed to Thursday, 07 August 2025, to afford legal representatives an opportunity to consult and prepare for trial. 'The trial will commence on Monday, 11 August 2025. Accused number three (William Musora) has been moved out from the previous attorneys. Now he is going to be represented by Legal Aid South Africa.' State witness During the brief proceedings on Monday, the 20-year-old De Wet, a supervisor on the farm, turned state witness, and testified that Olivier shot and killed the two women. De Wet is expected to testify that he was 'under duress' when he was forced to throw their bodies into the pig enclosure, according to his lawyer and the state prosecutor. Charges against De Wet are expected to be dropped when he begins his testimony as a state witness. Olivier, De Wet and Musora are facing two counts of murder, attempted murder, defeating the administration of justice, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and unlawful possession of ammunition. Musora, who is a Zimbabwean national, faces an additional charge of contravening the Immigration Act. In December, a visibly emotional Olivier shook his head when Magistrate Ntilane Felleng announced the postponement of his bail application, meaning he spent Christmas behind bars. Murder Olivier, De Wet and Musora are accused of killing Maria Makgato and Lucia Ndlovu before dumping their bodies in a pigsty at Onvervaght farm in Sebayeng, outside Polokwane, in August. It is the state's case that Makgato and Ndlovu went to the farm to collect expired food that the pigs were eating.
