FIH Pro League 2025: India women lose to Australia 1-2 after late error

The Indian women's hockey team came agonisingly close to holding world No. 3 Australia to a draw, only to be undone by a late defensive lapse in their FIH Pro League 2025 encounter on Sunday at London's Lee Valley Hockey and Tennis Centre. India led for more than half the match and looked set to share the points until Australia converted a last-minute penalty corner to snatch a 2-1 win. Indian coach Janneke Schopman later reflected that the team showed tremendous spirit but needed to manage key moments better.
Early Spark Gives India the Edge
India made a dream start, with Vaishnavi Phalke finding the net in just the third minute through a brilliant field goal. Her quick anticipation and cool finish gave India a surprise early lead. The Indian midfield, buoyed by the early goal, played with composure, denying Australia any clear chances in the first half. With resolute defending and good ball circulation, India entered half-time with a deserved 1-0 lead, showcasing one of their best starts in the league so far.
Australia Strike Back in Second Half
The Australians came out with more urgency after the break, and it paid off in the 37th minute. Midfielder Amy Lawton capitalised on a momentary lapse in India's marking to level the scores. The equaliser shifted the momentum slightly in Australia's favour, but India responded with strong counters and stayed in the contest. Despite some close chances for both sides, the deadlock continued deep into the final quarter.
Final Minute Heartbreak
Just when it seemed India would earn a morale-boosting draw, disaster struck. In the final minute, Lexie Pickering converted a penalty corner variation, catching the Indian defence off guard. The goal, timed at 60:00, sealed India's second straight loss to Australia after Friday's 2-3 defeat. India now turn their focus to Tuesday's match against Argentina, aiming to bounce back with sharper execution in the dying stages.

Nitish in danger of ruled out of the remainder of Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy

Nitish Kumar Reddy is in danger of being ruled out of the remainder of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy after picking up a knee injury while training at the gym. The Hindu understands that the all-rounder underwent scans, which revealed ligament damage, and the BCCI medical team is currently monitoring the situation before making a decision about his future. Nitish skipped the team's visit to Manchester United FC, and also could not be spotted in the optional practice session. With the series on the line, this comes as a huge blow. With Jasprit Bumrah's workload in question, Arshdeep Singh suffering a cut on his bowling hand and Akash Deep unlikely to attain full fitness before the fourth Test, beginning on Wednesday, the Indian think-tank now faces a major challenge. Anshul Kamboj linked up with the team in Manchester on Sunday, after being named as a back-up for Arshdeep. After sitting out of the series-opener in Leeds, Nitish played the second and third Tests. Though he failed to make an impact in Birmingham, with two runs and no wickets, he took crucial wickets of Ben Duckett and Zake Crawley at Lord's in the first innings, while dismissing Crawley again in the second essay. So far, India has played a seam-bowling all-rounder, with Shardul Thakur playing the first Test before Nitish featured in the other two.

I Feel Completely Out Of Place...: James Anderson Has A Weird Reaction On Sharing Trophy Name With Sachin Tendulkar

James Anderson has opened up about his feelings on sharing the title of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy with legendary Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar. Despite being one of the game's most successful fast bowlers, Anderson admitted that the honour feels somewhat unusual for him. He stated that he feels overwhelmed by the honour and feels out of the place in doing so. The ongoing England-India Test series is the first to be played under the newly named Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Previously, the Pataudi Trophy was contested during series hosted in England. The change was made by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) ahead of the current five-match series, with England currently leading 2-1 going into the fourth Test in Manchester. Speaking on Sky Cricket, Anderson said, "I feel completely out of place when I see myself alongside him with the trophy. As I said, I hold him in such high regard." He further elaborated on the surreal nature of hearing praise for his achievements. "It is strange that when people talk about what I have achieved in cricket, like when I hear about it, as if someone's talking about someone else, if that makes sense. Like I don't feel it is me who has achieved all this. It sounds really strange, but that is how my head works. I just can't quite believe the things that come with playing such a long time." Despite taking 991 international wickets and cementing his place as one of the greatest pacers in cricket history, Anderson finds it hard to accept being placed on the same pedestal as Tendulkar. He retired from international cricket in July 2024 after playing his final Test against the West Indies at Lord's and was last seen representing Lancashire in the County Championship. England are currently leading the series after a narrow 22-run win in the third Test at Lord's. The fourth Test is scheduled to begin on July 23 at Old Trafford. For India, led by Shubman Gill, the match is a must-win to keep their series hopes alive. A win for England would secure the series, making the upcoming game crucial for both sides. India's Squad - Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (wk), Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Sai Sudharsan, Abhimanyu Easwaran, Karun Nair, Nitish Reddy, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel (wk), Washington Sundar, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammad Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav England Squad for the Remaining Tests: Ben Stokes (Captain), Jofra Archer, Gus Atkinson, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Zak Crawley, Liam Dawson, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Jamie Smith, Josh Tongue, Chris Woakes

5 Players Who're Out/Doubtful For 4th India-England Test In Manchester

The fourth Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy will be played at Old Trafford in Manchester from July 23 to 25. The fourth Test of the ongoing five-match series between India and England will be played at Old Trafford in Manchester from July 23 to 27. In the build-up to the match, which is expected to be an edge-of-the-seat thriller like the last one, the Indian team is dealing with injury-related issues for at least four players, while the English team also has a couple of fitness-related concerns. While the match is still three sleeps away, it remains to be seen how the situation unfolds in the next 60 hours. Shoaib Bashir: England spinner Shoaib Bashir suffered a finger injury on his non-bowling hand on Day 3 of the third India-England Test at Lord's, because of which he was ruled out of the last two matches. In his absence, Liam Dawson was added to England's 14-member squad, and the 35-year-old is in contention to play his first Test for England since July 2017. Arshdeep Singh: Left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, in all likelihood, will miss the fourth Test in Manchester. The 26-year-old cricketer, who is yet to make his Test debut for India, hurt his bowling hand in his follow-through during a training session in Beckenham on Thursday. As per the available information, he has a deep cut and has stitches on his bowling hand. Rishabh Pant: Rishabh Pant is India's first-choice wicketkeeper-batter in Test cricket. The left-handed batter suffered a finger injury on Day 1 of the Lord's Test, and he didn't keep the wickets after 34 overs in the first innings. There is no official update about his recovery from the finger injury, and there are high chances of him not playing the fourth Test as wicketkeeper. Nitish Kumar Reddy: India suffered a big setback on Sunday evening when it was reported that 22-year-old all-rounder Nitish Reddy will miss the last two matches of the series due to a knee injury that he suffered while training in the gym on Sunday, with scans revealing ligament damage. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
