CAS sets date for Crystal Palace verdict over Europa League demotion

Leader Live3 days ago
The Eagles were demoted from the Europa League to the Conference League by European football's governing body UEFA on July 11 after it determined that as of March 1, American businessman John Textor had control or influence at Palace and French club Lyon.
Palace appealed against the decision to the CAS, and the court confirmed on Wednesday that a hearing would take place on August 8, followed by a verdict on August 11. That is the day after Palace, as FA Cup holders, face Premier League champions Liverpool in the Community Shield.
UEFA rules state where one or more clubs are deemed to have common ownership, they cannot play in the same competition. Lyon edged out Palace for the sole Europa League place because they finished higher than Palace in the league.
Nottingham Forest have taken Palace's Europa League place. Palace are seeking to take either Lyon's or Forest's place in the second-tier competition in their appeal.
Textor has now sold his stake in Palace, with the purchase of his shares by New York Jets owner Woody Johnson completed last week.

Aaron Ramsdale speaks out on what made him want Newcastle move

Aaron Ramsdale has completed his loan move from Southampton to Newcastle, pointing out three reasons behind his motivation to move to St James' Park. The 27-year-old spent just one year with the Saints after signing from Arsenal and it was not a great season as Southampton finished bottom of the Premier League table. The England international's reputation remained intact, though, and he is straight back into the top flight. The Magpies have brought in the goalkeeper on a season-long loan with an option to buy next summer and he expects that will be taken up as he says he will be with the club for the 'foreseeable future'. There were multiple reasons that Ramsdale was attracted to Newcastle, firstly mentioning St James' Park itself, where he has played many times before. Speaking on his unveiling as a Newcastle player, he said: 'It's great to be here. I've always loved coming here and I've seen how passionate and loud the fans can be. I've always loved playing here at St. James' Park – I've not always had the greatest of results, but when the fans get behind you it's some place.' The Magpies finished fifth last season, returning to the Champions League as a result and the chance to play at Europe's top table again was obviously also an attraction for the stopper. 'Coming to the stadium and seeing it empty today, it's quite surreal to think that this is going to be home for the foreseeable future,' he said. 'I've got the kit on, it's got the nice Champions League badge on the sleeve and I'm delighted to be here.' Another great appeal for Ramsdale is getting to work with manager Eddie Howe again after their time together at Bournemouth. The goalkeeper enjoyed his Premier League breakthrough with the Cherries, making 37 top flight appearances under Howe in the 2019/20 season. 'Working with the manager and his coaching staff again were a big draw for me,' he said. 'They've already had a great influence on my career and the gaffer turned me from a man into a professional footballer at Bournemouth. He really showed me the ropes so the manager and his coaching staff were a huge selling point for me to come here.' More Trending Newcastle already have Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka in their ranks and it is not entirely clear which goalkeeper will be first choice when the season gets underway later this month. Appearances: 183 Clean sheets: 41 Saves made: 595 Goals conceded: 278 Speaking of his new signing, Howe said: 'Aaron is an exceptional goalkeeper who adds further quality and international experience to our squad. 'Having worked with him before, I know what he can bring to us on and off the pitch, so we look forward to welcoming him into the group.' Chelsea told they've loaned out star who can be 'better than Messi'

Chelsea have been told that they have just loaned out a player who 'has everything to be better than Lionel Messi and Neymar'. It's been a busy summer at Stamford Bridge and not just because Enzo Maresca's side won the Club World Cup. The Blues have spent over £200million on seven new players, with Jorrel Hato and Xavi Simons also on their way from Ajax and RB Leipzig. However, one of those signings hasn't stayed in west London for long, having already been loaned out to Strasbourg, the French club owned by Todd Boehly's BlueCo group. Kendry Paez's move to Chelsea had long been in the works, with the club agreeing to sign him from Independiente del Valle over two years ago when he was just 15-years-old. Having now turned 18, Paez finally completed the £17m transfer this summer but Maresca believes the attacking midfielder will develop better in Ligue 1 where he can get more game time. His loan move was confirmed on Thursday – exactly one month after he arrived at Stamford Bridge. There is much hype surrounding the teenager who already has 18 caps for Ecuador and is the second-youngest South American to play international football behind only the legendary Diego Maradona. And according to former Ecuador international Carlos Tenorio, Paez could even surpass the greatest of all-time. 'He has everything to be better than Lionel Messi, better than Neymar, but it depends on him and his entourage,' the former forward said, as quoted by L'Equipe. 'It's the first time I've seen a player with these characteristics. I think he has everything to become one of the most important players in world football.' More Trending Tenorio also added that it was important not to 'put pressure' on the youngster, easier said than done when comparisons to Messi are made. If Paez can even get close to Messi's ability, Chelsea will have some player on their hands, with the current Inter Miami star and World Cup winning captain regarded as one of, if not the best footballer of all-time. In addition, Chelsea have also loaned goalkeeper Mike Penders and defender Mamadou Sarr to Strasbourg, while midfielder Mathis Amougou has moved there in a permanent deal. Sir Alex Ferguson takes in League One clash alongside ex-Man Utd youngster

Cardiff beat Peterborough 2-1 on Saturday in their League One opener and Sir Alex Ferguson was spotted watching the game in the stands as he came to support son Darren Sir Alex Ferguson was spotted in the stands at Cardiff's League One season opener against Peterborough on Saturday as he attended the game to support his son Darren, who manages Posh. ‌ Cardiff won the game 2-1 thanks in part to Ruben Colwill's stunning free kick, before Ronan Kpakio completed the turnaround victory after Bradley Ihionvien had put the away side ahead from the penalty spot in the first half. ‌ Manchester United 's legendary manager Sir Alex was a minor sub-plot to the game as he was picked out by the cameras in the stands, sitting alongside Peterborough's director of football Barry Fry, who came through the youth system at Old Trafford without playing a senior game. ‌ Commentator Daniel Mann was also keen to point out that Sir Alex and Fry both had a connection to United as he said: "I'm sure we're all excited to see Sir Alex here. "Another fellow former Manchester United man there in Barry Fry, who had four years there as a young player." Sir Alex retired from management in 2013 after bowing out with his 13th Premier League title and went on to become an ambassador for the club, regularly being spotted at their matches at Old Trafford. The Scot was reportedly being paid £2m a year by United as part of his role, but that has since been removed amid United's sweeping cost-cutting scheme under Sir Jim Ratcliffe. Fry, meanwhile, came through the United youth system back in 1960 but never played for the Red Devils. ‌ He has had an association with Peterborough since 1996 after starting off as manager of the club, staying in that role for nine years, before moving upstairs as director of football - a role he has held ever since. Fry, along with chairman Darragh McAnthony has been responsible for hiring Sir Alex's son Darren four times. Ferguson Jr first took over the club in 2007 for two years before returning in 2011 for four years. He then took up the job at Doncaster Rovers, where he spent another four years before going back to Peterborough yet again in 2019. He would resign in 2022 following a poor season before being persuaded to take up a fourth stint the following year after the sacking of Grant McCann.
