MILWAUKEE (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw appreciates his 11th career All-Star Game selection while acknowledging this one's a little different from the rest. The three-time Cy Young Award winner has made only nine starts this season but still got selected to the National League team as a Legend Pick by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, under a provision in the collective bargaining agreement. 'You never take for granted getting to go to an All-Star Game, regardless of the circumstances,' Kershaw said Monday before the Dodgers played the Milwaukee Brewers. 'Obviously, I don't deserve to get to go this season. I haven't pitched very much.' This marked the first time Manfred made a Legend Pick for the All-Star Game since 2022, when Miguel Cabrera and Albert Pujols both received that designation. 'I didn't really actually know that was a thing,' Kershaw said. 'At the end of the day, it's weird, but it's cool, so I'm just going to enjoy it.' The honor comes less than a week after Kershaw recorded his 3,000th career strikeout, becoming just the 20th pitcher to reach that plateau. He's in his 18th season with the Dodgers, tying Hall of Fame outfielder Zack Wheat and shortstop Bill Russell for the franchise record. Magic and Paolo Banchero agree on a 5-year extension. Total value could reach $287 million
Paolo Banchero has checked a lot of boxes since joining the Orlando Magic. Won rookie of the year, been an All-Star, helped the team to the playoffs twice. And now, the Magic are betting on there being more — much more. Banchero has agreed to the richest contract in Magic history, a five-year extension that is worth $239 million and could reach about $287 million should he become eligible for a supermax deal, a person with knowledge of the agreement said Monday. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the signing had not been announced by either Banchero or the Magic. ESPN, which first reported the agreement, said it also included a player option for the final year. The agreement means the Magic have four players — Banchero, Franz Wagner, Jalen Suggs and the newly acquired Desmond Bane — under contract for the next four seasons. And in the cases of Banchero, Wagner and Suggs, the terms extend out at least five seasons. Banchero was the rookie of the year in 2022-23, living up to his billing after being the No. 1 pick in the 2022 NBA draft. He was an All-Star in his second season and was well on his way to that again last season before an early-season oblique injury. Dodgers place Kiké Hernández on injured list and call up James Outman to headline series of moves
MILWAUKEE (AP) — Los Angeles Dodgers utilityman Kiké Hernández went on the injured list with left elbow inflammation and outfielder James Outman got called up from the minors among a series of moves the NL West leaders made Monday. The Dodgers also called up right-handed pitcher Julian Fernández, optioned left-hander Justin Wrobleski to Triple-A Oklahoma City and designated infielder CJ Alexander for assignment before beginning a three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Hernández started getting bothered by the elbow issue during a series in Cleveland at the end of May. 'There was a slide there at home plate where it really started to act up and bother him,' Roberts said. 'At that point in time, he kept it to himself, just wanting to be out there and compete. It just continually got worse and really impacted his offense and his swing. And so just a couple of days ago it really reached a head where it was pretty much intolerable.' Hernández has hit just .109 (6 of 55) since the start of June. The 33-year-old is batting .195 with a .259 on-base percentage, eight homers and 22 RBIs in 71 games this season. Roberts said the Dodgers are hopeful Hernández could return shortly after the All-Star break.
