Quebec environment ministry fines Northvolt for polluted run-off water
There are concerns among residents about contaminants from Northvolt's South Shore site seeping into the Richelieu River south of Montreal. Concerns arise over Northvolt contaminants seeping into the Richelieu River south of Montreal Quebec's Environment Department has fined Northvolt for allegedly releasing wastewater with high levels of aluminum and chromium at its Montérégie region site. Provincial officials issued the $10,000 penalty in June, saying the wastewater allegedly exceeded legal limits of the metals. The department says the North American branch of the Swedish battery manufacturer had released the run-off water at its site in December. The future of the proposed electric vehicle battery plant on the site is up in the air, after its parent company filed for bankruptcy in Sweden. This is the third time the Quebec ministry has penalized the company. It previously fined Northvolt for allegedly clearing a marsh without authorization and for allegedly failing to install barriers needed to protect a nearby wetland. One person in custody after apartment building fire in North London
One person was taken into custody and an entire floor out of commission after apartment building fire in North London. 'London fire crews were alerted by multiple 911 calls to 349 Wharncliffe Road for an apartment fire with somebody trapped on the balcony,' said Platoon Chief Gary Mosburger of the London Fire Department. 'Our first engine arrived, within four minutes of notification and was able to successfully deploy ladders to rescue that person from the balcony. We have the fire under control on the third floor; we've got the building evacuated in and working with our partners to help support the evacuees.' Wharncliffe fire Aug. 4 London firefighters had to rescue a person from a balcony on the third floor after a fire at 349 Wharncliffe Road North Monday morning (Brent Lale/CTV London) Some residents were able to shelter in place, but most evacuated the building. The third floor is out of commission for people going back in. Fire officials said smoke went up above the unit to higher floors, so firefighters are working to make sure everyone is safe. Residents told CTV News this is the second fire in that same unit, which led them to believe that's why the tenant was taken into custody. North Monday morning (Source: Brent Lale/CTV London) A man was taken into custody by London Police after a fire in his unit at 349 Wharncliffe Road North Monday morning. (Brent Lale/CTV London) 'Our area of responsibility is the fire itself,' said Mosburger. 'We've contacted our fire prevention investigators to come in and determine the origin, cause, and circumstance of the fire. Fire at this time of the day is rather not normal with respect to this type of building. We have a lot of fire damage and smoke damage throughout, so our investigators will do their origin cause and get back to us with that information.'

Family caught in police shootout announces lawsuit against Montreal police, city
A family that was caught in a shootout between Montreal police and an armed suspect last year is suing the police force and the city. A family that was caught in a shootout between Montreal police and an armed suspect last year is suing the police force and the city. Houssam Abdallah and his family members allege the officers acted negligently and recklessly towards them, causing lasting physical and mental impacts. Lawyer Virginie Dufresne-Lemire says Abdallah was shot six times and his son was shot once during a shootout between police and a 26-year-old suspect in August 2024. The lawyer says the suspect allegedly tried to steal Abdallah's vehicle before exchanging gunfire with police in front of the family's home in the Montreal suburb of Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Que. The family says Abdallah and his son were left on the ground without medical care for at least an hour and were eventually handcuffed. Quebec's Crown prosecution office announced in June it would not lay charges against Montreal police officers in the case, following an investigation by the province's police watchdog. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 4, 2025.
