A Japanese investor has completed its takeover of a port in the Highlands.Global Energy has sold the Port of Nigg and its fabrication arm to minority investor Mitsui for an undisclosed sum.The site, in Easter Ross on the Cromarty Firth, is seen as vital to the expansion of offshore wind and is a leading part of one of Scotland's two green freeports. The port has received about £120m of investment, including some public funding, in the past 14 years to upgrade its facilities.
Mitsui took a 25.5% stake in Global Energy, owned by businessman Roy MacGregor, in 2012.The Tokyo-based firm brings specialism in engineering, energy, shipping and port operations. The company said it hoped to further expand manufacturing capacity and infrastructure for both the on and offshore markets after completing the deal.
Highlands and Islands Enterprise announced a £10m investment in the port in March to create a new heavy-duty quayside. At the time, the deputy first minister, Kate Forbes, described it as a "catalyst for further investment".Nigg received its green freeport status in January 2023, alongside Forth Ports.Green freeports are able to offer tax incentives and lower tariffs within the zones they cover. However, they have commitments to meeting net zero targets and supporting fair work practices. In February, HMRC gave it permission to have some of its own customs arrangements, meaning taxes and certain duties on goods arriving do not have to be paid.

Loews' quarterly profit rises on investment income, strong insurance unit

Aug 4 (Reuters) - Loews Corp (L.N), opens new tab reported a rise in second-quarter profit on Monday, helped by higher investment income and strong performance in its insurance unit. U.S. stocks staged a rebound following weeks of tariff-driven turbulence, as signs of easing trade tensions and hopes for renewed trade negotiations between Washington and key trading partners helped calm investor nerves, easing fears of a prolonged economic fallout. The New York-based company's investment income rose to $714 million in the quarter compared with $639 million a year earlier. The company rakes in the bulk of its revenue from CNA Financial (CNA.N), opens new tab, the insurance giant in which it owns a dominant 90% stake, according to LSEG data. Firefly Aerospace lifts IPO price range, targets $6 billion valuation amid space investment boom

Aug 4 (Reuters) - Northrop Grumman-backed Firefly Aerospace raised the proposed price range for its U.S. initial public offering on Monday and is now targeting a valuation of up to $6.04 billion in its U.S. listing, underscoring investor interest in space-related ventures. The Texas-based space startup aims to raise $696.6 million by selling 16.2 million shares priced between $41 and $43 each. This compares with its prior proposed range of $35 to $39 per share. Executives appear to be regaining their appetite for IPOs, buoyed by strong market debuts from tech-focused companies like design software firm Figma (FIG.N), opens new tab and stablecoin-issuer Circle . Despite concerns over a potential labor market slowdown, resilient consumer spending and lower-than-expected tariffs have pushed equity markets to record highs. At the top end of its revised range, Firefly's valuation would represent a significant jump from its Series D funding round in November, which valued it at more than $2 billion. U.S. President Donald Trump has renewed federal focus on space capabilities, which have largely been outsourced to private-sector firms. Major defense initiatives - including the $175 billion Golden Dome space-based defense program - have further spurred private investment into the sector. Additionally, the recent tensions between Trump and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk have prompted a significant shift in the administration's relationship with Musk's company, which is a leading launch provider for the U.S. military and NASA. Firefly is scheduled to price the deal on Wednesday and is expected to begin trading on the Nasdaq under the ticker symbol "FLY" the following day. Goldman Sachs, J.P. Morgan, Jefferies and Wells Fargo Securities are the lead underwriters for the IPO.
