Chennai: Three women held, child rescued in suspected trafficking racket
According to police, one of the suspect Vidya (36) was nabbed after she arrived on a two-wheeler at Britannia Nagar near Kathirvedu in Puzhal with a male child, allegedly for sale. Acting on prior information, the police detained her. Based on her statement, Rathi Devi (39) and Deepa were picked up from a house in Menambedu near Ambattur. The duo is being questioned, the police said.
A police source said the case surfaced after one Karthik alerted the Puzhal police, claiming a woman had approached him with an offer to sell a child for Rs 12 lakh. Under police instructions, Karthik continued to engage with the suspect, who asked Rs 10 lakh for the child's mother and Rs 2 lakh for herself, the police said. She agreed to deliver the child at a designated location, leading to her detention on Friday.
The police said initial inquiries revealed that Rathi Devi, separated from her husband, had planned to sell her own child due to financial distress, allegedly with the help of Vidya and Deepa. Officers also found multiple photos of children on Vidya's phone, raising suspicions of a broader trafficking network, police said.
All three women are in custody as the police are questioning them separately to verify their claims and uncover possible links to other missing children. The rescued child has been handed over to the child welfare department, the police said.

Gold dust, hydroponic weed worth Rs 6.4 cr seized at Mumbai airport; two held
Mumbai, Aug 5 (PTI) The Mumbai Customs arrested two persons, one of them an airport staffer, with gold dust and hydroponic weed worth Rs 6.41 crore in separate seizures at the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, officials said on Tuesday. The Airport Commissionerate of the Mumbai Customs on Sunday intercepted two persons on suspicion, and found that one of them, a transit passenger, had allegedly handed over 1,510 gm of gold dust in wax, worth Rs 1.39 crore, to an airport staffer, an official said. The airport staffer admitted that he had collected four packs of 24 KT gold dust from a passenger, he said. In another seizure, a passenger who landed from Bangkok on Monday was apprehended with hydroponic weed worth Rs 5 crore, the official said. The traveller was arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, he said. During FY25, a total of 465 surveys were conducted, which led to detection of undisclosed income of Rs 30,444 crore. In FY24 and FY23, 737 and 1,245 surveys were conducted by the I-T department and undisclosed income of Rs 37,622 crore and 9,805 crore, respectively, were detected. The total number of groups searched during FY25 stood at 1,437 and assets seized stood at Rs 2,504 crore. In FY24, 1,166 groups were searched leading to total asset seizure of Rs 2,555 crore. In FY23, Rs 1,766 crore assets were seized following searches in 1,437 groups.
