IMD has issued a red alert in 10 districts including Shimla, Solan, Sirmaur, Mandi, Kullu, Kangra, Chamba, Una, Hamirpur, and Bilaspur. Authorities are reporting heavy rainfall in these places. Landslides, and rising river levels have also been reported. The alert remains in place through June 30, with more rainfall forecast for the first week of July.
Shimla–Kalka railway affected
Meanwhile, the heavy rains have led to the suspension of the iconic Shimla–Kalka narrow-gauge railway, which is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It attracts tourists from all over but the overnight heavy rain triggered landslides. Several trees were uprooted along the tracks near Koti in Solan district. Because of which authorities had to shut down all the rail service. As per latest update, the services resumed after the restoration work.

Maharashtra likely to receive above-normal rainfall in July: IMD

Maharashtra is expected to witness widespread above-normal rainfall in July 2025, according to the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) Monthly Outlook for Rainfall and Temperature report released on June 30. Being part of the monsoon core zone, the state is likely to receive enhanced rainfall activity, with particular concern for the Krishna and Godavari river basins where extreme category rainfall is anticipated. The weather department released a colour-coded probabilistic rainfall map indicating that most parts of Maharashtra are likely to experience above-normal rainfall in July. (REPRESENTATIVE PIC) Addressing a virtual press conference on Monday, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, director general of meteorology, IMD, said that special attention needs to be paid to the two river basins due to the elevated risk of flooding and related hazards. The heavy rainfall could significantly impact the surrounding regions, necessitating vigilant monitoring of river water levels, tributaries, and reservoirs. The forecast for July is part of IMD's probabilistic monthly rainfall outlook based on the Multi-Model Ensemble (MME) forecasting system. The advanced method utilises inputs from various coupled global climate models (CGCMs), including those developed under IMD's Monsoon Mission Climate Forecasting System (MMCFS). On climatic conditions influencing the monsoon activity, Mohapatra said that currently, neutral El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) conditions prevail over the equatorial Pacific Ocean and are expected to persist through the remainder of the monsoon season, according to MMCFS and other international climate models. The weather department released a colour-coded probabilistic rainfall map indicating that most parts of Maharashtra are likely to experience above-normal rainfall in July. Mohapatra emphasised need for continuous monitoring and proactive administrative response, especially as the month is expected to see an increase in the number of days with low-pressure systems (LPS), similar to the pattern observed in June that contributed significantly to rainfall over central India and along the western coast. 'In June alone, we recorded 13 LPS days, compared to the long-term average of just 2.8 days for the month,' said Mohapatra, adding that the trend of increased low-pressure activity is likely to continue into July. The IMD outlook of timely rains will benefit the agriculture sector and gives a warning signal for potential extreme weather events.

Breaking News Live Updates: Red alert in Himachal Pradesh as monsoon rains spark severe flood warning

Breaking News Live Updates: Heavy rain has pushed the Beas River into severe flooding. Himachal Pradesh woke up to blocked roads, power cuts and broken pipelines as the monsoon tightened its grip. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) raised a red alert for the state. The rain hasn't paused, crippling daily life and cutting people off from basic services. Massive disruptions across districts The Himachal Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (HPSDMA) counted 259 roads blocked and 614 transformers knocked out. Water supply lines took a big hit too — 130 schemes stopped flowing overnight. 'The monsoon is intensifying its grip, and the impact is visible across multiple districts. Roads, power lines, and water systems are all severely affected,' said an official from the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC). He added that field teams are trying day and night to fix what's broken. Mandi district is the worst affected. It alone reported 139 roads blocked and 314 power transformers damaged — most of them in Gohar, Mandi II and J Nagar. A landslide at Jagatkhana in Bilaspur choked the highway, forcing traffic into a single lane. Floodwater at Pandoh in Mandi only made matters worse. Kullu, Sirmaur and Lahaul also reeling Sirmaur district counted 92 water schemes hit, including 19 in Nohradhar. Kullu has 20 roads blocked and 47 water schemes down in Kullu, Largi and Anni sub-divisions. Spiti Valley in Lahaul and Spiti saw 139 transformers fail in one blow. An official from the Revenue and Disaster Management Department said, 'Our top priority is restoring access and utilities in the worst-hit areas like Mandi, Sirmaur, and Kullu. Repair teams are being deployed with urgency.' Landslides trigger highway chaos On Monday, landslides and shooting stones shut down the Chandigarh-Manali highway for hours. Traffic was halted near Thalout, Larji and 9 Mile in Mandi. Commuters had no choice but to crawl along link roads or wait for bulldozers to clear debris. At Thalout, falling rocks blocked the road by the tunnel exit for two hours. A local official explained, 'The highway got blocked near 9 Mile late Sunday night due to a landslide triggered by heavy rainfall. By the time the landslide debris was cleared in the morning hours, there were more landslides and incidents of shooting stones; that's why it took time to restore the traffic movement.' Police warned of more falling stones near 4 Mile, 7 Mile and Dwara — known danger spots when the hills are soaked. US brings charges in North Korean remote worker scheme that officials say funds weapons program The Justice Department announced criminal charges Monday in a scheme by North Korea to fund its weapons program through the salaries of remote information technology workers employed unwittingly by U.S. companies. The charges arose from what law enforcement officials described as a nationwide operation that also resulted in the seizure of financial accounts, websites and laptops that were used to carry out the fraud. Separate cases in Georgia and Massachusetts represent the latest Justice Department effort to confront a persistent threat that officials say generates enormous revenue for the North Korean government and in some cases affords workers access to sensitive and proprietary data from the American corporations that hire them. The scheme involved thousands of workers who, armed with stolen or fake identities, were dispatched by the North Korean government to find work as remote IT employees at American companies, including Fortune 500 corporations. The companies were duped into believing that the workers they hired were based in the U.S. when many were actually stationed in North Korea or China, and the wages the victimized companies paid were transferred into accounts controlled by co-conspirators affiliated with North Korea, prosecutors say. Senate votes on amendments to Trump's big bill ahead of July 4 deadline Possible changes to President Donald Trump's big bill of tax breaks and spending cuts are being considered in what's called a vote-a-rama, though most of the amendments are expected to fail. After a weekend of setbacks, the Senate is rushing Monday to move ahead with the bill despite a series of challenges. The hours ahead will be pivotal for the Republicans, who have control of Congress and are racing against Trump's self-imposed July 4 deadline. The 940-page ' One Big Beautiful Bill Act,' as it is now formally titled, has consumed Congress as its shared priority with the president, with no room politically to fail, even as not all Republicans are on board. Land along Ganga e-way, airport link can't be sold in Noida

Noida: There will be no land deals along a proposed route connecting under-construction Noida International Airport (NIA) with Ganga Expressway. Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) officials have warned that "any violation could lead to strict administrative action". UPEIDA has finalised the alignment for a 74.3km-long greenfield link expressway that will directly connect NIA in Jewar with the ambitious Ganga Expressway. To curb speculative land deals and keep the project on schedule, UPEIDA has ordered a complete halt on the sale and purchase of notified land along the proposed route. Estimated at Rs 4,000 crore, the link expressway project aims to create a seamless high-speed corridor connecting the Ganga with Yamuna expressways. The Ganga Expressway, currently under construction from Meerut to Prayagraj, is one of the longest expressways in India, designed to transform travel across Uttar Pradesh. "The new expressway is expected to transform regional connectivity, making travel to Agra, Delhi, Mumbai and Prayagraj faster and smoother, while driving industrial development in the surrounding areas," a senior YEIDA official said. This 120m wide expressway will start from the Siyana area in Bulandshahr and connect with the Yamuna Expressway near Film City in Sector 21. Initially planned at 83km, the route was realigned to avoid cutting through Yamuna City's developed sectors. The link expressway will pass through 56 villages, including eight in Gautam Budh Nagar and 48 in Bulandshahr district, covering areas like Khurja, Bulandshahr, Syana and Shikarpur tehsils. Key villages include Mehndipur Bangar, Bhaipur Brahmanan, Rabupura and Myana in Jewar tehsil, as well as Amanullahpur, Kapna, Bhagwanpur and others in Khurja tehsil and several villages in Bulandshahr and Syana tehsils. Once operational, the link expressway will provide direct connectivity from the Noida International Airport to the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, Agra via Yamuna Expressway and further up to Prayagraj through the Ganga Expressway. This will not only ease traffic on existing routes but also enhance passenger and cargo movement, boosting the region's position as an industrial and logistics hub. The alignment has been designed to connect directly with Yamuna City's industrial sectors 28, 29, 32 and 33, making cargo transport to and from the airport more efficient. Authorities are also exploring a potential link to NH34 though no concrete plan has been prepared yet.
