Video ‘showing Sena minister with cash bag' stirs Maharashtra row

MUMBAI :
Shiv Sena
(UBT) MP
Sanjay Raut
on Friday posted a video on X purportedly showing the state's social justice minister Sanjay Shirsat of the Shiv Sena sitting in a room along with a partially opened bag containing what look like bundles of currency notes.
Shirsat, however, rubbished the claim, saying the bag only contained clothes.
The allegation came a day after it emerged that Shirsat had received a notice from the income tax department seeking an explanation for increase in his financial worth between the 2019 and 2024 assembly elections from Rs 3.3 crore to Rs 35 crore. Last month, Shirsat and his son withdrew from a hotel deal after an opposition outcry.
Raut said in his post that Union home minister
Amit Shah
should take note.
'I feel pity for CM Devendra Fadnavis! How many more times will he just sit and watch his reputation being torn to shreds? Helplessness has another name: Fadnavis!' Shirsat said in response, 'The house seen in the video is my home. It shows I am sitting (clad in a vest) in my bedroom. My pet dog and a bag are also seen. This means I have just returned from travel and removed my clothes. If I have to keep such a big bag of money, is there a dearth of cupboards?' Criticizing the opposition for raking up the issue 'deliberately,' Shirsat said, 'They see (currency) notes even in cloth bags.

' He added, 'Had there been money, I would have kept it in the cupboard.'
Sena (UBT) MLA
Aaditya Thackeray
said sarcastically that Mahayuti legislators were showing disregard for the rule framed by Modi govt that a person should not handle cash beyond Rs 2 lakh on a given day. Raut and Thackeray expressed their apprehensions about whether action would be taken against Shirsat and Sena MLA Sanjay Gaikwad (who assaulted MLA hostel canteen staffers) when their videos, they said, were 'good enough to prove their crime.'
Shirsat said, 'Such claims won't affect my (political) career.' Shirsat had told the media on Thursday he had sought more time to reply to the I-T department's notice asking for an explanation for the increase in his financial worth. However, he had to backtrack on his remark that Kalyan MP Shrikant Shinde had received a similar notice and later clarified that he had no knowledge of Shrikant Shinde receiving any I-T notice.
Shirsat, an MLA from Sambhajinagar West, had declared Rs 44.8 crore in cash and liabilities of Rs 26.5 crore in loans from multiple banks in his election affidavit in Oct 2024. His declared holdings included agricultural land valued at Rs 4.4 crore and flats in Mumbai and Sambhajinagar collectively worth Rs 4.7 crore.
Shirsat has been the target of AIMIM's former Aurangabad MP Imtiaz Jaleel and leader of opposition inthe legislative council Ambadas Danve over the assets issue.

BMC plans hawker-free zones across all wards

Mumbai: A year after submitting a list of 20 hawker-free zones to Bombay HC, BMC is now planning to replicate the model across all civic wards. At a recent meeting, municipal commissioner Bhushan Gagrani directed ward officials to coordinate with local police and identify specific stretches that can be strictly monitored and kept free of illegal hawkers. These areas will be jointly supervised by civic and police staff to ensure consistent enforcement and pedestrian safety. A BMC official said, "Complaints about hawkers occupying footpaths and narrowing walking space have been increasing, especially in high traffic areas. We have been asked to address this through targeted enforcement. The commissioner has also instructed that additional manpower and machinery be provided to wards on demand. Consistent enforcement will send a strong message to hawkers and discourage them from returning. " In May, a dozen housing societies from Thakur village in Kandivli East had approached Mumbai North MP and minister Piyush Goyal, seeking his urgent intervention to address growing encroachment by illegal hawkers in their locality. They said hawkers had taken over roads and footpaths, and claimed that no action had been taken despite repeated complaints and peaceful protests. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Treatment That Might Help You Against Back Pain! It said it had to discontinue a valet parking initiative it had launched due to lack of official support. Citizen activist Nikhil Desai said effective action is possible if BMC and police work in coordination. "Dadar TT, which is on the list of proposed hawker-free zones, continues to be overrun by hundreds of hawkers at any given time. The only sustainable solution is to relocate them to designated hawking zones." He also recalled how in March a ward officer who took action against illegal flower vendors outside Matunga station was abruptly transferred after facing political pressure. Rajkumar Sharma, president of the Chembur-based advanced locality management and networking action committee, felt authorities keep passing the buck. "Ideally, BMC officials should act against such encroachments before residents are made to take matters in their own hands and go to court."

Public reps most trusted link between govt, people: Yogi

Lucknow: Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Sunday said that public representatives are the most trusted link between the people and the govt and their ideas and suggestions should be actively incorporated in policy planning and implementation. Holding a special dialogue with MLAs from Kanpur division at his official residence here on Sunday, the CM reviewed 1,362 proposed infrastructure projects worth Rs 10,914 crore and said that priorities should be set in consultation with public representatives to ensure swift and people-centric service delivery. Public representatives from six districts — Kanpur Nagar, Kanpur Dehat, Farrukhabad, Kannauj, Etawah, and Auraiya — were invited to participate in the session. "Ideas and suggestions of public representatives are not merely means of dialogue but also reflect public aspirations, which should be actively incorporated in policy planning and implementation," the CM said. He asked officials not to treat the experiences and regional insights of legislators as merely documentary inputs, but to use them as a living basis for policymaking. The CM directed the public works department (PWD) to set priorities for proposed work in consultation with local representatives and ensure timely commencement of projects. He described the initiatives not merely as govt expenditure but as "capital of public trust". The CM asked officials to ensure prompt approval and execution of projects prioritised by public representatives. He asked the urban development department officials to ensure that the names of local public representatives were included on foundation stones and plaques related to urban development work. Yogi also sought feedback on the ground realities, public expectations, progress of development work, and administrative coordination in their respective constituencies. "Kanpur division holds a vital place in the balanced and sustainable development of the state. It is not only the industrial and educational backbone of the state, but also a centre of cultural diversity, historical awareness, and political commitment of public representatives," Yogi said. Describing the Kanpur division as a "pioneer of development", Yogi expressed confidence that it would soon emerge as a model for not just Uttar Pradesh but for the entire country. Kanpur city is set to be gifted with 426 projects worth Rs 5,006 crore, followed by Farrukhabad (308 projects worth Rs 2,476 crore), Kanpur Dehat (336 projects worth Rs 1,214 crore), Kannauj (98 projects worth Rs 1,076 crore), Etawah (128 projects worth Rs 620 crore), and Auraiya (66 projects worth Rs 524 crore).

Bihar's draft poll roll may exclude 66 lakh names: EC

NEW DELHI: The Election Commission on Sunday said Bihar's draft electoral roll may exclude 66 lakh names as they had either become electors in other states or UTs, were non-existent, did not submit enumeration forms within the July 25 deadline or were not willing to register as electors for some reason or other. Of the 66 lakh electors, 22 lakh were found to be deceased, 36 lakh permanently shifted or untraceable, and seven lakh enrolled at multiple places. Over one lakh did not return their forms by the deadline. "Exact status of these electors will be known after scrutiny of these Aug 1. However, genuine electors can still be added back in electoral rolls during the claims and objections period from Aug 1-Sept 1," EC said in a statement. It said the seven lakh electors found enrolled at multiple places will be retained in only one place. EC underlined that submission of over 7.2 crore forms by electors in Bihar pointed to their "overwhelming participation" in the special intensive revision (SIR) of rolls. It said all aims of SIR - participation of all electors and political parties; no eligible electors - temporary migrants, urban electors, young electors - be left behind; assistance by election staff in enumeration phase; scrutiny of draft roll; and no deletion of draft electoral roll without a speaking order - have either been fulfilled or will be met. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like AirSense 11 – Smart tech for deep sleep ResMed Buy Now Undo On achieving the aims, EC said participation of electors and parties was realised through involvement of field representatives of the 12 major political parties, such as district presidents and 1.6 lakh booth level agents. No elector be left behind was achieved with SMSes sent to 5.7 crore registered mobile numbers, allowing BLAs to submit up to 50 forms daily, and visits to electors' addresses. Outreach to temporary migrant electors was ensured with advertisements in 246 newspapers. This resulted in action by 29 lakh migrants - 16 lakh filled the form online and 13 lakh downloaded it. Regular involvement of electors and political parties was ensured by sending 10.2 crore SMSes to electors acknowledging receipt of forms. Lists of electors not found at their addresses or whose forms weren't received were shared on July 20 with the parties. On scrutiny of draft roll, EC said digital and printed copies of draft roll of each booth will be shared with political, adding no name can be deleted without notice and speaking order of ERO/AERO, it said.
