Tea App Breach Exposes 72,000 Selfies, ID Photos and Other User Images
Tea, a women's safety dating app that surged to the top of the free iOS App Store listings this week, has been the subject of a major security breach. The company confirmed Friday that it has "identified authorized access to one of our systems" that exposed thousands of user images. According to Tea's preliminary findings, the breach allowed access to approximately 72,000 images, broken down into two groups: 13,000 images of selfies and photo identification that people had submitted during account verification and 59,000 images that were publicly viewable in the app from posts, comments and direct messages. Those images had been in a "legacy data system" that contained information from more than two years ago, the company said in statement. "At this time, there is no evidence to suggest that current or additional user data was affected." Earlier on Friday, posts on Reddit and 404 Media reported that Tea app users' faces and IDs had been posted on anonymous online messageboard 4chan. Tea requires users to verify their identities with selfies or IDs, which is why driver's licenses and pictures of people's faces are in the leaked data. The premise of Tea is to provide women with a space to report negative interactions they've had while encountering men in the dating pool, purportedly to keep other women safe. The app hit the No. 1 spot on Apple's US App Store this week, drawing international attention and sparking a debate about whether the app violates men's privacy. If the reports of a breach turn out to be true, it will also play into the wider ongoing debate around whether online identity and age verification pose an inherent security risk to internet users. In the privacy section on its website, Tea says: "Tea Dating Advice takes reasonable security measures to protect your Personal Information to prevent loss, misuse, unauthorized access, disclosure, alteration and destruction. Please be aware, however, that despite our efforts, no security measures are impenetrable." Tea said it has launched a full investigation to assess the scope and impact of the breach.

This is useful for bypassing firewalls and internet censorship, and many of the most private VPNs have their own obfuscating protocols. Thanks to a June 2025 update, Mimic is available on iOS, having already been supported on Mac, Windows, and Android VPN apps. Currently, WireGuard and OpenVPN are only supported on Windows and Android. However Norton VPN is aiming to bring WireGuard to Mac, iOS, and TV users soon. Double VPN routes your traffic through two encrypted VPN servers instead of the usual one, with improved levels of privacy and security its objective. It's not designed for everyday browsing or streaming, and you may see a decrease in performance when using the feature. Norton VPN has made Double VPN a full feature and it can be accessed on all platforms under the Advanced Servers tab on the Change VPN Location screen. Privacy is also the focus with Norton VPN's IP Rotation. This feature changes your IP address every 30 seconds and makes it harder for you to be tracked online. Like Double VPN, IP Rotation can be selected from the Advanced Servers tab. You may see an impact on performance and it's not optimized for streaming. Apple broadens App Store's age rating system
Apple is expanding its age rating system for apps. The company on Thursday said it has updated its age rating system to add 13+, 16+, and 18+ ratings to the existing slate of 4+ and 9+ ratings, and remove the 12+ and 17+ age ranges. In addition, app developers will need to answer a new set of age rating questions to help identify the sensitive content in their app. Developers will also be able to update their apps' age ratings to one of the new options, if needed. The company says it has automatically updated all apps and games across the App Store to align with the new system, which is available in the beta versions of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, macOS Tahoe 26, tvOS 26, visionOS 26, and watchOS 26. The public betas went live yesterday, and the general release will roll out this September to all customers. As part of the updated system, developers will need to inform Apple about their in-app controls and app capabilities, answer questions about medical and wellness topics, and disclose whether their app or game contains violent themes. Apple will then calculate the appropriate age rating, which developers can view and modify in App Store Connect. The ratings are intended to offer parents more specific guidance about the apps their kids want to download, and will prevent kids from installing apps that exceed their age range. On Apple's side, the App Store also won't feature certain apps in areas like the editorial stories, Today, Games, and Apps tabs if they're not age-appropriate for the child using the device. The expanded age ranges are part of a broader update around child safety initiatives announced earlier this year. For parents, Apple is making it easier to set up child accounts and share information about their kids' ages. This data will be shared with app developers to help provide age-appropriate content. (Some of the changes for child accounts were first made available in the public beta of 18.4, out earlier this year.) Apple introduces new child safety initiatives, including an age-checking system for apps App Store product listings will also be updated to include more information to help guide guardians' decisions about whether or not an app or game is right for their child or teen. For instance, guardians will be informed if the app features user-generated content or ads, both of which could expose younger children to adult content. Plus, they'll be informed if an app offers built-in parental controls. Increasing an app's age rating could reduce its visibility and distribution, which could encourage app developers to introduce parental controls or other age-appropriate experiences. The changes to the App Store arrive as legislative disputes grow at both the state and federal levels about how children should be protected online, with U.S. states introducing new bills and laws that would require app store operators to check kids' ages to get parental consent for downloading apps. Apple and Google would prefer that the app makers themselves handle the age-verification process, but larger tech companies like Meta have lobbied for app stores to do the verification. Apple's solution is a system that will protect the child's personal information, like their birth date, by offering a developer API that gives them access to the age range information they need to customize their app experience appropriately. Because this information would be provided by the parent during the set-up of a new device, it's more likely to be accurate than if kids entered their birthday or age into an app directly, as kids may lie about their age to access an app's full experience.
