Ranbir Kapoor Replaced Salman Khan To Play Ram In Ramayana After Sohail Khan's 'Mistake'

Salman Khan was once set to play Lord Ram in a Ramayana film. A reported fallout involving Sohail Khan and Pooja Bhatt allegedly cost him the role, now played by Ranbir Kapoor.
Long before Ranbir Kapoor was locked in as Lord Ram for Nitesh Tiwari and Namit Malhotra's epic Ramayana, Bollywood superstar Salman Khan was reportedly in line to play the divine role. With anticipation mounting for Tiwari's two-part cinematic retelling—slated to release its first installment on Diwali 2026—a curious chapter from the '90s has resurfaced, revealing that Salman had once even donned the bow and arrow for a different Ramayana project helmed by none other than his brother, Sohail Khan.
As per reports from Mid-Day and India.com, Sohail had announced a film based on the Ramayana back in the early 1990s, during his initial stint as a director following his debut with Auzaar. Salman Khan was roped in to play Lord Ram, with Sonali Bendre cast as Sita. The buzz around the project grew when actor-filmmaker Pooja Bhatt also came on board.
In fact, nearly 40 percent of the film had reportedly been shot, and Salman had even begun promotional work, appearing in full Ram avatar—complete with traditional attire, bow, and arrow. But the film never saw the light of day. What derailed the project wasn't creative differences or budgetary constraints—but a budding off-screen relationship.
According to insiders, romance blossomed between Sohail Khan and Pooja Bhatt during the film's shoot. Pooja had even spoken about marriage during a 1995 interview, indicating the relationship had grown serious. However, when their father, legendary screenwriter Salim Khan, learned about the relationship, he reportedly advised Sohail to step away.
Although Salman tried to maintain peace and salvage the film, things took a turn. Pooja, upset with the cold reception from the Khan family, is said to have exited the film, effectively bringing the entire production to a halt. As a result, the project was shelved indefinitely—and Salman's portrayal of Lord Ram remained an unrealized dream.
Now, nearly three decades later, the Ramayana has found new life under Tiwari's direction with Ranbir Kapoor as Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita, and Yash as the formidable Ravana. But for those who remember Bollywood in the '90s, the tale of Salman Khan's lost Ramayana remains a fascinating 'what could have been."

The Scratch and Sniff Chronicles: Book mixes Bengali mystery with gothic flair

Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Jul 20 (PTI) Blending elements of Bengal's detective tradition with gothic fiction, a new book promises a gripping whodunnit laced with humor and unexpected twists and turns. 'The Scratch and Sniff Chronicles", published by Niyogi Books, is written by Singapore-based writer Hemangini Dutt Majumder. 'Murder mysteries are my happy place. I unabashedly love every trope related to the whodunnit style. That said, the germ of this novel really came from the lead protagonist Olympia Ghoshal Chattergé, or Ollie, the likable doofus, who has lived in my head for several years. '… I thought it would be fascinating to flip the script and make her condition a sort of super-power rather than an affliction," Majumder, who previously authored children's book 'The Mystery of the Many, Many Missing Things", said in a statement. The story follows Ollie, a young woman with an uncanny sense of smell, an unusual symptom of a health condition, and a rare female wine sommelier and beverage consultant. Her life changes quite dramatically when she and her entire family decide to relocate to their ancestral estate, Neelbari, in Chandannagar, where strange and mysterious incidents begin to unfold. 'Is the malevolent spirit of her great-grandmother really haunting Neelbari? And why has their arrival caused so much alarm? What secrets are the walls and gardens of the hundred-year-old estate hiding? Why does no one seem to be telling the truth? What follows is a gripping whodunnit with ample doses of humour and delicious twists and turns?" are among the questions that unravel in the story. The book is endorsed by the likes of celebrated writer and Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) co-director Namita Gokhale and former diplomat TCA Raghavan. While Raghavan lauds Majumder for bringing to life a 'lovable but eccentric Bengali family with wit and empathy", Gokhale described the novel as a 'multilayered literary tribute to the classical Bangla whodunnit". 'It is an olfactory journey through stories and spectres and scary situations," she added. The book, priced at Rs 495, is available for purchase across online and offline stores. Salman Khan's Battle Of Galwan Set To Go On Floors This August: Report

Salman Khan will star in "Battle of Galwan," directed by Apoorva Lakhia, about the 2020 Galwan Valley clash. Filming starts in August in Mumbai, then Ladakh. After the release of Sikandar, Salman Khan is gearing up for his next major project titled Battle of Galwan. The war drama, directed by Apoorva Lakhia, will depict the 2020 Galwan Valley clash between Indian and Chinese troops which was one of the most intense military confrontations in recent years. According to a new report now, the filming is expected to begin in early August. Sources close to the production revealed to Mid-Day that the shoot will start in Mumbai before moving to Ladakh. A large set is currently being constructed at Mehboob Studio, which is expected to be ready by the end of July. 'The Mehboob Studio schedule is crucial as [the team] has to shoot some of the early character-building moments there before the team heads to Ladakh for the high-octane action. The art and production design team has been working round the clock to recreate the textures inside the studio. It's a detailed set that will add authenticity to the story," a source shared, confirming that Salman will be present from the first day of shoot. The next leg of filming will shift to Ladakh, where the team is preparing for more physically demanding sequences. 'Salman has been in prep mode for the role since May," another insider told the publication. The Ladakh schedule reportedly involves night shoots, combat training, and full-scale battle sequences. Speaking earlier about his preparation for the role, Salman admitted it has been tough on his body. 'It's physically intense. With each passing year, month, and day, it becomes more challenging. I have to invest a lot more time now. Earlier, I could get into shape in just a week or two, but this time I'm running, kicking, punching — doing it all," he said. Battle of Galwan is tentatively scheduled for a May 2026 release, although an official announcement is still awaited. Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
