Geeky Gadgets15-06-2025
What if you could transform raw data into a sleek, interactive dashboard in just 10 minutes? It might sound ambitious, but with the right tools and guidance, it's entirely possible. Imagine walking into a meeting with a visually compelling report that not only grabs attention but also delivers actionable insights—without spending hours wrestling with spreadsheets or coding. Power BI, a leading business intelligence tool, makes this a reality by offering a user-friendly platform to create professional dashboards with minimal effort. Whether you're a data enthusiast or a complete beginner, this walkthrough will show you how to turn your data into a powerful storytelling tool in record time.
In the video below Mo Chen will teach you how to connect your data, clean and prepare it, and design visualizations that truly resonate with your audience. You'll also learn how to add interactive features, like slicers and filters, that make your dashboard more dynamic and engaging. By the end of this guide, you'll not only have a functional Power BI dashboard but also the confidence to replicate the process for future projects. Mo Chen, an expert in data visualization, has broken down the process into clear, actionable steps that anyone can follow. Let's explore how to make the most of Power BI's capabilities and create something that informs and inspires. Build a Power BI Dashboard 1: Import and Connect Your Data
The process begins with connecting Power BI to your data source. Power BI supports a wide range of data sources, including: Excel spreadsheets
SQL databases
Cloud-based platforms like Azure, Google Analytics, or Salesforce
To start, open Power BI Desktop and select the 'Get Data' option. Choose your desired data source and follow the prompts to establish the connection. Once connected, review the imported data to ensure all fields and tables are loaded correctly. This step is critical for identifying any missing or incomplete data that could affect your dashboard later. Taking the time to verify your data structure at this stage ensures a smoother workflow as you proceed. 2: Clean and Prepare Your Data
Clean data is the backbone of any reliable dashboard. Power BI's Power Query Editor provides robust tools to help you prepare your data effectively. Common data preparation tasks include: Removing duplicate entries
Filling in missing values
Standardizing inconsistent formats, such as dates or currencies
For example, if your dataset contains dates in multiple formats, you can use the 'Transform' tab to standardize them into a single format. Similarly, you can remove unnecessary columns or rows that do not contribute to your analysis. By making sure your data is clean and well-structured, you set the stage for accurate and meaningful visualizations. How to Build a Power BI Dashboard

With your data prepared, the next step is to create visualizations that effectively communicate key insights. Power BI offers a wide variety of visualization options, such as: Bar charts: Ideal for comparing categories, such as sales by region
Ideal for comparing categories, such as sales by region Line graphs: Useful for tracking trends over time
Useful for tracking trends over time Pie charts: Best for showing proportions or percentages
Best for showing proportions or percentages Tables: Provide detailed views of raw data
To create a visualization, simply drag and drop fields from the 'Fields' pane onto the report canvas. Use the 'Visualizations' pane to customize the appearance of each chart. For instance, you might use a bar chart to compare monthly sales across regions or a line graph to illustrate revenue trends over time. Customizing your visualizations ensures they are both informative and visually appealing. 4: Customize and Organize Your Dashboard
Customizing your dashboard enhances its usability and ensures it aligns with the needs of your audience. Logical organization is key—place the most important metrics in prominent positions and group related visuals together. Power BI provides several formatting options to help you refine your dashboard, including: Adjusting colors and fonts to create a consistent theme
Resizing and aligning visuals for a clean, professional layout
Adding gridlines or borders to improve organization
For example, applying a consistent color scheme across all visuals can make your dashboard look polished and cohesive. Additionally, consider labeling your visuals clearly to ensure users can quickly understand the data being presented. 5: Add Interactivity with Filters and Slicers
Interactivity is one of the most powerful features of Power BI dashboards, allowing users to explore data dynamically. Adding filters and slicers enables users to focus on specific aspects of the data. Key interactive elements include: Filters: Apply these to individual visuals or the entire report to narrow down data based on specific criteria.
Apply these to individual visuals or the entire report to narrow down data based on specific criteria. Slicers: Allow users to drill into specific categories, such as product lines, regions, or time periods.
For instance, adding a slicer for 'Year' enables users to analyze trends for a specific time frame, while a filter for 'Region' allows them to focus on performance in a particular area. These interactive features make your dashboard more engaging and user-friendly, empowering stakeholders to explore the data in ways that are most relevant to them. 6: Publish and Share Your Dashboard
Once your dashboard is complete, the final step is to publish and share it with your audience. In Power BI Desktop, click the 'Publish' button to upload your report to the Power BI Service. From there, you can: Generate a shareable link to distribute the dashboard to your team
Embed the dashboard in platforms like Microsoft Teams or SharePoint for seamless collaboration
Set permissions to control who can view or edit the dashboard
Publishing your dashboard ensures that your insights are accessible to the right stakeholders, allowing data-driven decision-making across your organization. Additionally, the Power BI Service allows you to schedule data refreshes, making sure your dashboard remains up-to-date with the latest information.
Building a Power BI dashboard in 10 minutes is a realistic goal when you follow a clear, step-by-step process. By connecting your data, preparing it, creating visualizations, and adding interactivity, you can design a dashboard that effectively communicates insights. Publishing and sharing your work ensures it reaches the right audience, empowering your team to make informed decisions. Whether you're analyzing sales performance, tracking operational metrics, or exploring customer behavior, Power BI provides the tools you need to turn data into actionable insights quickly and efficiently.

Cursor AI's Controversial Pricing Update Explained, is Simplicity a Thing of the Past?

What happens when a tool designed to simplify your workflow suddenly becomes more complex? That's the question many Cursor AI users are grappling with following the platform's latest update. Once celebrated for its straightforward pricing and user-friendly approach, Cursor AI has introduced a new usage-based pricing model that's as ambitious as it is polarizing. While the company touts this change as a step toward sustainability and scalability, many users are left questioning whether the trade-off is worth it. With concerns over transparency, value, and the loss of control over AI model selection, the update has sparked a heated debate about what users should expect from their AI tools—and whether Cursor can still deliver on its promise of simplicity. In this overview, Robin Ebers unpacks the implications of Cursor AI's pricing overhaul and explore what it means for both casual users and power users alike. From the introduction of 'auto mode' to the competitive pressures posed by rivals like Claude Code, this update is more than just a pricing shift—it's a reflection of the growing pains many AI platforms face as they scale. Whether you're curious about how these changes might impact your workflow or looking to understand the broader trends shaping the AI landscape, this analysis will provide the insights you need to navigate the evolving world of Cursor AI. After all, when innovation meets friction, the real story lies in how companies adapt—and how users respond. Cursor AI Pricing Changes Cursor explains more 'We recognize that we didn't handle this pricing rollout well, and we're sorry. Our communication was not clear enough and came as a surprise to many of you. We're improving how we communicate future pricing changes. We are offering usage refunds for those with unexpected usage between June 16 and July 4. Please contact pro-pricing@ if you had a surprise usage bill and the team will work as fast as possible to get you a full refund.' From Simplicity to Complexity: The New Pricing Model Cursor AI's previous pricing model was simple and predictable, offering users a $20/month plan that included 500 fast requests and unlimited slower requests. This structure was particularly appealing to users seeking affordability and ease of use. However, the company determined that this model was financially unsustainable in the long term. As a result, Cursor introduced a tiered, usage-based pricing system with three distinct plans: Pro ($20/month): An entry-level plan with limited usage, suitable for casual users. An entry-level plan with limited usage, suitable for casual users. Pro Plus ($60/month): A mid-tier option offering expanded features and higher usage limits. A mid-tier option offering expanded features and higher usage limits. Ultra ($200/month): A premium plan designed for heavy users, providing the most included usage. A key feature of the new model is 'auto mode,' which dynamically selects AI models based on availability and cost-efficiency. While this feature allows for unlimited usage within certain parameters, it also imposes restrictions on users who prefer specific models, such as Claude 4. These limitations, coupled with additional charges for model-specific usage, have caused frustration among users accustomed to greater control and predictability. User Concerns: Transparency and Value The transition to the new pricing structure has been met with mixed reactions, with many users expressing concerns about clarity and value. The introduction of 'auto mode' has been particularly contentious, as some users find its functionality and limitations difficult to understand. Additionally, the new model's rate limits and restricted access to preferred AI models have led to perceptions of diminished value compared to the previous plan. In response to these concerns, Cursor has acknowledged its shortcomings in communication and taken steps to improve transparency. These measures include: Updating documentation to provide a clearer explanation of the new pricing structure. Introducing a subscription usage summary to help users monitor their consumption more effectively. Offering refunds to users who experienced unexpected charges during the transition. While these efforts aim to rebuild trust, dissatisfaction persists among some users, particularly those who feel the new pricing model undermines the predictability and flexibility they previously enjoyed. Competitive Pressures: How Cursor Stacks Up Against Claude Code Cursor's pricing overhaul has inevitably drawn comparisons to competitors like Claude Code, which continues to offer a more straightforward pricing approach. For example, Claude Code's Max plans provide unrestricted access to specific models, such as Claude 4, and deliver better throughput for users who prioritize performance and model specificity. In contrast, Cursor's reliance on 'auto mode' limits user control over model selection. While the Ultra plan offers significant usage at a competitive price, it may not appeal to users who value flexibility and predictability over cost-efficiency. For these users, Claude Code presents a compelling alternative. However, Cursor's offerings remain attractive to users who can adapt to the constraints of 'auto mode' and prioritize cost-effectiveness over model preference. The choice between Cursor and its competitors ultimately depends on individual user needs, including their usage patterns and priorities. Balancing Financial Viability with User Satisfaction Cursor AI's pricing overhaul reflects a broader effort to balance its operational costs with the demands of its user base. By encouraging users to adopt 'auto mode,' the company aims to optimize resource allocation and ensure long-term sustainability. However, this approach has alienated some users who feel the new structure sacrifices the flexibility and predictability they valued in the previous model. To navigate this tension, Cursor must focus on improving its communication and enhancing transparency. The company has already taken steps in this direction, but further investment in user-centric features and clearer messaging will be critical to regaining trust. Additionally, Cursor must remain attentive to the competitive landscape, making sure its pricing model aligns with both its operational goals and the evolving needs of its diverse user base. Cursor's ability to strike this balance will play a pivotal role in determining its future success. By addressing user concerns and refining its offerings, the company has the opportunity to maintain its competitive edge while fostering a more satisfied and loyal customer base. Best Apple deals for Amazon Prime Day, from AirTags to iPads

We're more than halfway through Amazon Prime Day 2025 and I'm here to bring you the best Apple deals throughout the four-day event. Whether you've been eyeing up a new iPad or Apple Watch, or you're finally ready to upgrade your iPhone, now's your chance to save. Prime Day runs until 11 July and is Amazon's biggest shopping event of the year, with thousands of exclusive offers for Prime members. Apple discounts don't come around often, but this is one of the rare moments when you'll see real price cuts on everything Apple, from AirPods to MacBooks and everything in between. I've been covering Prime Day for close to a decade, so you can trust that I'll only flag the best bargains of the bunch. I'm rounding up the top Apple deals throughout the day and updating this page as soon as I spot a discount, so you can find the deals that are actually worth your time (and money). Why you can trust IndyBest to find the best Apple deals in the Amazon Prime Day sale As The Independent 's senior tech critic, I specialise in all things tech, with a focus on Apple products. Whether I'm reviewing the latest AirPods or predicting the specs of the next iPhone, I've been tracking Apple prices for years. This allows me to spot the best deals from a mile away. If you're after AirPods at their lowest-ever price, you can count on me to be the first to report on the discount. The best Apple deals in the Amazon Prime Day 2025 sale are: Reduced to their all-time low price, I'd recommend snapping these up while you can. Praised by tech critic David Phelan, they boast better audio and better active noise cancellation than the AirPods 4. David's review found that they feature some really neat adaptive audio features that react to your environment in real time. I know all that first-hand, too; these are actually the earbuds I wear every day, and I love that they're being updated with new features all the time. Launched in March, the all-new 11th-generation iPad has dropped to its lowest-ever price this Prime Day. Replacing the 10th-gen model, it boasts a faster A16 Bionic chip, USB-C charging and double the storage, with 128GB as standard. It still features the same bright 10.9in Liquid Retina display, making it the best-value iPad in Apple's line-up right now and a steal at this price. If you're looking to upgrade your laptop this Prime Day, you'll be pleased to hear that Apple's latest and greatest MacBook Air has been slashed by £150, bringing it down to an all-time low price. In his rave review, tech critic David Phelan found the laptop 'Preposterously slim, sharply designed and appealingly light, with battery life that goes on and on'. He also loved the faster processor and improved webcam. It's really simple; according to David, 'this is Apple's best MacBook Air yet.' I've also spotted a discount on the AirPods 4 – Apple's latest wireless in-ear headphones. Right now, they're at their lowest ever price on Amazon and you won't find them this cheap anywhere else. In his review, tech critic, David Phelan, found that the music quality of these headphones was 'exemplary'. While the noise cancellation doesn't quite match that of the AirPods pro 2, 'it certainly quells background noise effectively'. This best-ever deal will save you £30. The latest Apple Watch Ultra 2 has just been slashed by a huge £150 for Prime Day. In his review, tech critic David Phelan called it 'a big chunky wearable that's perfect for extreme sport enthusiasts,' as it has a two-day battery life that's perfect for hiking. It boasts a bright 3000-nit display, a sleep apnoea-detection feature to track breathing irregularities over time, and an upgraded S9 processor, making it faster and last longer than other watches. You also get a neat double-tap gesture feature for one-handed control. If you want a more affordable smartwatch from Apple, the series 10 (and its hefty £104 discount) should be at the top of your basket this Amazon Prime Day. Boasting a bigger display and thinner profile than its predecessor, it has health features galore including sleep apnoea monitoring, on-wrist ECGs and a whole host of workout-tracking options. No wonder it earned a full complement of five stars from our Apple expert David Phelan in his Apple Watch series 10 review. Apple's all-new budget phone has just received a price cut of more than £100. It's better than the iPhone SE in every way. In his review, tech critic David Phelan said it's 'not an upgraded iPhone SE,' but 'an awful lot more, from more storage to a bigger display.' Looking to save big on the iPhone 16 this Prime Day? The 128GB model has already dipped below £700 thanks to a 13 per cent discount, with similar savings to be found on the larger storage options. In his review of the iPhone 16, tech critic David Phelan praised the smartphone's 'extremely useful camera control, the funky audio options and faster wireless charging.' He added, 'feature after feature that you might have expected to be Pro-only is on the iPhone 16,' making it an excellent option if you'd been saving up for one of the pricier models. This is the lowest price I've seen on a pack of four AirTags since Black Friday last year. If you're like me and constantly losing things, these are a game-changer. In my review, I raved about how you can track your stuff with precise turn-by-turn directions in an augmented-reality environment inside the Find My app. These AirTags are a lifesaver if you ever misplace your wallet or your keys. Amazon is offering a rare £20 off the Apple pencil pro, which is the brand's top-of-the-line stylus for the latest iPads. Its squeeze gestures, haptic feedback and double‑tap shortcuts make it ideal for creatives, students, or anyone serious about sketching or note-taking. It's a small discount, but the pencil pro almost never goes on sale, so if you've been looking to buy one, now's the time. If you want to upgrade your desktop set-up, there's a small reduction on the Mac mini desktop computer. It has Apple's latest M4 chip, and its mini dimensions mean that it'll slot perfectly into a small home office. It's a modest price drop of 17 per cent, so we'll let you know if there are further reductions. A must-have accessory for any Mac or MacBook owner, the Magic Mouse makes working and browsing seamless thanks to its multi-touch surface and optimised foot design. It's also wireless and rechargeable, so you can throw it in your bag for on-the-go. You can grab it in the Amazon Prime sale for £20 off. There's £24 off Apple's magic keyboard in this year's Prime sale. Its sleek, wireless design offers a comfortable typing experience and the internal battery is said to last around a month between charges. It also includes a USB-C port and a woven USB-C charging cable for quick pairing and power. If you're looking to invest in a pair of AirPods at a more affordable price, Amazon is currently offering the entry-level model (without noise cancellation) with a 12 per cent discount. That's £36 cheaper than the upgraded version (also featured in our roundup), yet you still get up to five hours of listening time, a water-resistant design, voice isolation and a charging case that holds up to 30 hours of power.
