3 Ways to Boost Collagen Production for Plumper, Firmer Skin
You've heard it before—daily sun protection is a must, especially for keeping collagen strong. 'Aside from aging and natural collagen loss, UV damage is the number one cause of collagen decline,' says Dr. Spearman. In short, skipping sunscreen (or using one with a low SPF) during sun exposure speeds up sagging and wrinkles.
Dr. Spearman's advice? Make SPF 30 or higher a non-negotiable in your routine to protect your skin. If you're not a fan of traditional sunscreen, a tinted sunscreen prevents a white cast and evens out skin tone, so you can skip foundation if you choose. Another genius pick is SPF drops. These concentrated, serum-like drops can be mixed into your moisturizer or foundation (or used on their own) for seamless protection. Either way, just make sure SPF is part of your daily glow-up.
Two formulas to try: Eucerin Tinted Age Defense SPF 50 Face Sunscreen and Coola Sun Silk Drops.
There's a reason retinol is the gold standard in anti-aging skin care products. The vitamin A derivative speeds cell turnover, exfoliates and—most importantly—stimulates collagen production while slowing its breakdown, says Kristin Gunn, a celebrity aesthetician and owner of Halcyon Skincare and Beaux Medspa in Austin, Texas.
Retinol gets a bad rap for being drying and irritating, but the right formula makes all the difference. Look for a retinol cream infused with hydrators like glycerin or hyaluronic acid to offset irritation. Gunn's tip: Ease in slowly with retinol—start with once or twice a week and gradually increase as your skin adjusts.
If your skin is ultra-sensitive or you have struggled with retinol in the past, opt for bakuchiol instead. This plant-based alternative mimics retinol's benefits, boosting collagen output and improving skin turnover without the irritation.
For a hydrating retinol product, try RoC Retinol Correxion Smoothing Max Hydration Cream; for a retinol alternative, look to The INKEY List Bakuchiol Moisturizer.
Collagen creams are everywhere, but here's the scoop—collagen's larger molecules are too big to penetrate the skin. The better way to get a boost? Add an oral collagen supplement to your routine. New York City board-certified dermatologist Dendy Engelman, MD, swears by collagen peptides, which simply refers to collagen that's been broken down to make it easier for your body to absorb.
Studies show that supplementing with collagen peptides helps increase collagen production, so skin looks plumper and more hydrated. The best way to take them is in liquid or powder form. If you're not into supplements, Gunn says you can still boost collagen naturally with foods like bone broth, fish, egg whites and leafy greens.
A great collagen peptide powder to try is Reservage Beauty Collagen Replenish Powder. For more skin care tips and tricks, click through these stories:

8 Best Pore Strips for a Congestion-Free T-Zone
When it comes to quick fixes for clogged pores, the best pore strips have long held a beloved spot in skin-care routines worldwide. There's something undeniably satisfying about peeling away a strip and seeing the visible evidence of impurities (think: blackheads and sebaceous filaments) lifted from your skin. Beyond their instant gratification, pore strips provide an effective way to deep-clean areas prone to blackheads, such as the nose, chin, and forehead. They act like a magnet, drawing out excess oil and debris that can clog pores and lead to breakouts. In the age of TikTok skin-care experts, pore strips have gotten a bad rep—but you don't have to toss away the category as a whole. 'Using pore strips occasionally isn't harmful, but frequent use can sometimes irritate the skin,' says board certified dermatologist Dr. Dara Spearman. Plus, the pore strips of 2025 are a far cry from their Y2K predecessors, which tore off skin with a vengeance—evolution in the category has led to gentler hydrocolloid and biocellulose patches that equally, if not more effective. Meanwhile, K-beauty alternatives offer sebum-melting oils and treatments that ditch adhesive patches altogether. Dr. Spearman adds, 'While traditional strips provide quick results, K-beauty techniques offer a gentler, long-term way to care for your pores. It really comes down to what works best for your skin.' 14 Skin Care Products That Deliver Fast Results
Patience may be a virtue but, when it comes to getting rid of that pimple or softening those fine lines, I don't want to wait. While no over-the-counter serum or cream can create a miracle, I wanted to know which skincare products and ingredients could deliver the most rapid results. Fortunately for me and anyone else who loves instant gratification, board-certified dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology, Dr. Brendan Camp said that such a thing may exist. Certain skincare ingredients may have almost-immediate — albeit more temporary — effects, he said.'These include hyaluronic acid, which effectively hydrates skin to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles [and] caffeine, which constricts superficial blood vessels, can reduce puffiness and the appearance of dark circles,' he said. (This is opposed to ingredients like retinol, which promotes cellular turnover over time and delivers noticeable results in 2-3 months.) There are a few other ingredients and skincare products that Camp and other dermatologists named as capable of offering fast-acting results, depending on your skin concern. Take a peek at their product picks in the list ahead. A visible redness-reducing moisturizer Camp said that green-tinted moisturizers can help offset the appearance of background redness in the skin temporarily and suggested this La Roche-Posay moisturizer that is probably best to wear during the day, rather than overnight due to its tint."Formulated with glycerin and prebiotic thermal spring water, this redness-reducing cream contains color-correcting green pigments that instantly improve the appearance of visible facial redness," Camp said. The Rosaliac AR face cream also contains neurosensine, a type of peptide that can help soothe troubled skin for long-lasting comfort. Get it from Dermstore for $30.99. A peptide and ceramide cream Dr. Dara Spearman, a board-certified dermatologist and owner of Radiant Dermatology Associates, suggested this skin-renewing night cream by CeraVe, a beloved drugstore brand that features three essential ceramides in all its products. "Ceramides [are] part of the skin's barrier," Spearman said. "External use of them helps to restore that natural barrier when it has been damaged. They provide immediate relief for dry, irritated, or dehydrated skin, leaving it feeling soft and hydrated right away." In addition to CeraVe's signature ceramide-filled formula aimed at strengthening the skin's barrier, the Skin-Renewing night cream is enriched with a peptide complex. Dermatologists previously told us that certain peptides can help boost collagen production and elastin, which can result in skin that's firmer, plumper and with fewer fine it from Amazon for $15.68. A popular water gel moisturizer According to Spearman hyaluronic acid can increase hydration of the skin overnight. "Hyaluronic acid binds 1000 times its weight in water, this plumping of the skin will improve fine lines and smooth the skin's texture," she said. Spearman said she "loves" Neutrogena's Hydro Boost water gel moisturizer, which contains purified hyaluronic acid and has a "light and non-greasy but still boosts hydration noticeably." Get it from Amazon for $16.44. A high-potency hyaluronic acid dermatologists say yields fast results (25% off) If you don't have a hyaluronic acid in your beauty bag, you're disservicing your face and the rest of your skin care products, honestly. I write this as a proud daily user. Hyaluronic acid can increase hydration overnight, according to Dr. Dara Spearman, a board-certified dermatologist and owner of Radiant Dermatology Associates. "[It] binds 1000 times its weight in water, this plumping of the skin will improve fine lines and smooth the skin's texture," she noted with HuffPost Shopping writer Tessa Flores in a previous dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology, Dr. Brendan Camp, specifically recommended this high-potency serum from Kiehl's."This fast-absorbing hyaluronic acid facial serum is formulated to replenish and intensively hydrate, leaving skin more plump, healthy and hydrated," Camp the perfect time to grab this for your dry skin it from Nordstrom for $36. A multi-dimensional hyaluronic acid-intensifying serum Recommended by Camp, this multi-dimensional serum by the dermatologist-loved SkinCeuticals is more than a standard hyaluronic acid serum. It's actually a hyaluronic acid intensifier that can "amplify the skin's hyaluronic acid levels by 30%," according to the brand. "In addition to hyaluronic acid, this serum contains botanical extracts of licorice root and purple rice to support the skin's moisture levels to improve the appearance of firmness, smoothness, and facialplumpness," Camp said. Get it from Dermstore for $120. A caffeine-filled moisture treatment Both Spearman and Camp spoke about the rapid-working benefits of caffeine, which, according to Spearman "will address dark circles, under-eye puffiness and tired skin very quickly."She suggested Kiehl's Facial Fuel, an energizing moisture treatment that may be marketed for men, but anyone can benefit from it. The fast-absorbing and non-greasy formula contains not just caffeine, but an antioxidant blend powered by vitamins C and E from chestnut it from Nordstrom for 33+ (available in three sizes). A de-puffing and brightening eye cream "This brightening eye cream is made with vitamin C, Niacinamide, ginseng, and caffeine to reduce the appearance of puffiness and dark circles," Camp said. It comes in two tones to offer an instant and slightly tinted brightening effect to help conceal dark circles. The moisturizing formula also features Niacinamide, an ingredient that Spearman said can quickly even skin tone and decrease inflammation. Get it from Amazon for $27.30+ (available in two shades). A famous vitamin C serum with antioxidant protection The SkinCeuticals C E Ferulic serum is Spearman's favorite vitamin C serum. She asserts that vitamin C is a brightening powerhouse that "reduces dullness and boosts radiance with a brighter complexion after one use."This isn't the first time that derms have sun the praises of this serum, which contains a 15% concentration of pure vitamin C (L-Ascorbic acid), vitamin E and ferulic acid — an antioxidant-rich combination that can replenish skin lipids and fend off oxidative stress that can cause premature skin aging. Get it from Dermstore for $185. Skin renewing treatment pads Khalifian mentioned these skin-brightening and texture-renewing treatment pads from SkinMedica because they contain 10% glycolic acid, an ingredient he said is "like a reset button for dull skin.""Glycolic acid will help lighten pigmentation, brighten your skin tone and tighten your pores," Khalifian said, adding that these pads also contain tranexamic acid, which is often used to help manage stubborn pigmentation issues, according to Khalifian. These brightening pads are suitable for the backs of the hands, neck and face. Get it from Amazon for $48. An affordable 7% glycolic acid toner If you're interested in the benefits of glycolic acid but want a more affordable option than the one above, we chose to include this crowd-favorite toner by The Ordinary, which contains 7% glycolic acid to even irregular skin texture and brighten tone. I'm a seasoned fan of this product and can attest to how much smoother and less decongested my skin feels after using this. Get it from Amazon for $8.70+ (available in two sizes). A gentle exfoliating cleanser 'This cleanser has salicylic acid, which will help unclog pores, reduce acne marks, and improve texture," Khalifian said of this exfoliating cleanser by SkinMedica, '[a]s well as ultra-fine jojoba beads to provide a light physical exfoliation, [this] cleanser carries a blend of citrus oils which provides a nice, fresh scent and will act as an astringent to aid in minimizing large pores.' A calming and redness-reliving serum "Aloe vera has anti-inflammatory properties that reduce redness and swelling, while deeply hydrating and cooling the skin. This can provide immediate relief for irritated, sunburned or inflamed skin," Spearman said. Using her guidance, we found this serum from The Ordinary containing 2% aloe to calm and hydrate and palmitoyl pentapeptide, an ingredient that may support the skin's barrier and improve any textural irregularities caused by acne, enlarged pores or a buildup of dead skin cells. How to avoid being soggy and smelly this summer, according to people who sweat a lot
Success may be 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration, but that's less the case when the perspiring in question comes with a serious stank. With so much of the country currently enduring an oppressive heat wave, and with temperatures set to hit over 100 degrees in multiple states, we're all thinking a lot about the best ways to stay cool and fresh. Of course, the most effective strategy for maintaining one's aromatic chill is to shelter in air-conditioned rooms (or at least plant yourself in front of a powerful fan). But even if you are lucky enough to live that AC life, modern adulthood requires engaging with the outside — for work, for errands, just to clean up the darn lawn — and once that heat hits your skin, you can expect to become moist, if not downright ripe. Sweating is the body's way of regulating abundant heat, and if you're one of the millions of Americans who suffer from conditions like hyperhidrosis, this wetness can be constant, excessive and, at least initially, feel impossible to control. But never fear, my funky friends. Heavy sweaters across the internet (including organizations like the International Hyperhidrosis Society, or IHS) have sorted out the precise tools you need to feel dry and smell fresh in even the most intense summer swelter. While these products — plus a few common-sense, dermatologist-approved solutions — may not completely eradicate a sweaty glow, they will help to keep the worst olfactory offenses at bay. Shower frequently. The first, most no-duh thing you're going to want to do is bathe — often. Frequent showers wash away the bacteria that, combined with sweat, cause odor in the first place. "I recommend showering with cooler or even cold water to keep the skin cool and promote better blood flow," says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Dara Spearman. And while you're getting clean, consider shaving your armpit hair, which can store excess bacteria and create a pungent scent. Wear loose-fitting clothing made of breathable fabrics like cotton or silk. "To keep cool and avoid sweat-induced skin irritation in the hot summer months, you should wear loose-fitting clothing made with natural fibers whenever you can," says Los Angeles-based cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Ava Shamban. "And, if you're exercising in nylon and spandex, you should remove your workout clothes as quickly as possible and shower to keep skin from developing rashes and infections." Try a variety of deodorants. The IHS recommends an array of potent deodorants and antiperspirants to get you through the hottest days. Look for a clinical-strength formula that contains more powerful ingredients in higher concentrations than regular versions, helping to block sweat glands and keep you both dry and smell-free. For places on your body like your feet, back, underboobs and groin area, cream deodorants or deodorant wipes can safely — and in some cases, gently — suppress the stink. Wear a moisture-wicking underlayer. After deodorant, sweatproof undershirts are the best line of defense against BO. They work to keep sweat off your skin, which means you'll feel less swampy and the bacteria in your pits won't have time to stew. When all else fails, call in the reinforcements. Look, no one wants to arrive anywhere fully and stench-ily flop-sweated, looking like a debate-stage Richard Nixon or Albert Brooks in Broadcast News. If your deodorant just isn't keeping up, or your sweat is somehow still spilling out of your moisture-wicking tops, these extra-protection pads will for sure soak up the slack. If you have Amazon Prime, you'll get free shipping, of course. Not yet a member? No problem. You can sign up for your free 30-day trial here. (And by the way, those without Prime still get free shipping on orders of $35 or more.) The reviews quoted above reflect the most recent versions at the time of publication.
