If you're looking to upgrade an older Android smartwatch, or want to give wearables a try for the first time, Samsung's Galaxy Watch 8 is a compelling choice. It has a new design, lets you access Google's Gemini AI from your wrist, and has a handful of new health and wellness features. It launched on July 25th, but you can already get the 40mm model on sale for $299.99 ($50 off) from Samsung. Amazon has the watch for full price, but is offering a $50 promotional credit toward a future purchase if you use the code APSUE5MBXB6Y at checkout.
Samsung's latest smartwatch features a new squircle design, Gemini, and some new health features like an Antioxidant Index and Running Coach.
The Galaxy Watch 8 is squircle shaped, which may be divisive, but allows it to lay flatter and Verge reporter Victoria Song found it fit more more comfortably on her wrist in her review. The change also let Samsung make the watch thinner than the Galaxy Watch 7, and yet we still found it can still last more than a day on a charge. While it's not a huge departure from its predecessor, it could be a good upgrade for anyone with a Galaxy Watch 5 or below, and Samsung's new discount counteracts the $50 price increase means you're not paying any more than the Galaxy Watch 7 cost at launch.
If you've gotten used to Google Gemini on your smartphone or computer, the Galaxy Watch 8 will let you access it from your wrist – we created playlists, checked the weather, and have previously asked Gemini whether it's necessary to scrub a sweet potato before peeling it.
On the health and wellness side, the Galaxy Watch 8 can track steps, your heart rate, blood oxygen level, steps, and activity. If you have a Samsung Galaxy phone, you use the smartwatch to take an EKG or detect sleep apnea. A new feature called Running Coach will put you through a 12-minute run test, give you a grade from one through 10, and create a workout program based on your performance. It also includes sensors designed to detect whether you're eating enough fruits and vegetables, but we found it can be fooled by colorful objects, including a Cheeze-It.

A case of measles has been confirmed in Passaic County, New Jersey, health officials announced Saturday. According to the state Department of Health, the patient recently traveled internationally, and this case is not related to measles cases in Hudson and Ocean counties that were reported in July. Health officials say the patient visited the Chilton Medical Center in Pompton Plains while contagious. Anyone who was in the emergency department between 7 p.m. on July 31 and 3:30 a.m. on Aug. 1 or the main hospital's fifth floor Intensive Care Unit between 1:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 1 may have been exposed to measles. Anyone who was exposed at those times could develop symptoms as late as Aug. 24, if infected. This is the sixth case of measles in New Jersey so far this year. Measles is spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes and can remain in the air for up to two hours. It can also be spread through an infected person's mucus or saliva. According to health officials, measles symptoms include high fever, cough, runny nose, watery red eyes, and a rash that appears as flat red spots on the face and all over the body. Anyone who suspects they have or were exposed to measles should call their local health department or health care provider to make special arrangements for evaluation. Potential patients are urged to call ahead before arriving at a medical office or emergency department due to the risk of infecting other visitors and medical staff. Those who have not received both doses of the MMR vaccine or had measles in the past are most at risk of becoming infected. All New Jersey residents are encouraged to stay up to date on vaccinations, and anyone travelling internationally should be fully vaccinated before leaving the country, the health department says. Data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in July shows 2025 is the worst year for measles in the United States since 1992. There have been 14 measles cases in New York so far this year, according to the latest state health department data. That includes seven cases in New York City, four cases in Orange County, one in Putnam County, one in Suffolk County and one in Ontario County. There have not been any cases of measles in Connecticut so far this year.

The clashing of metal and roar of cheering fans filled Vernon Street Town Square on Saturday as the NorCal Summer Smash took over downtown Roseville. Billed as the largest outdoor combat robotics event in Northern California, the day-long showdown drew hundreds of spectators and competitors from across the region. What began as a small garage project just a few years ago has now evolved into a thriving robotics community. "We've gone from a garage team with five kids to a community of over 200 students in our competition teams alone," said Kevin Miller, Executive Director of Placer Robotics. Students showcased months of hard work, launching robots they designed and built into head-to-head battles inside custom arenas. From lightweight plastic antweights to more powerful three-pound beetleweights, each match gave young engineers a chance to test, break, and refine their machines. "So many months and weeks designing this robot and it's so great to get out there and fight," said competitor Andrew Harabor. Also in attendance was Diana Tarlson, co-pilot of Team Skorpios from the popular television series BattleBots. "This is my favorite environment to be in," Tarlson said. "You see all these new minds that are just seeing these things live." For students like Harabor, it was a dream come true. "I love watching the 'BattleBots' show," he said. "When I realized I could build these robots myself, I was amazed. I thought it'd be a great engineering challenge." More than just competition, the NorCal Summer Smash aims to spark curiosity and build future careers in STEM: science, technology, engineering and math. "If they want to build, there are ways for them to do it," Tarlson added. "There are places they can go, and people in the community who can help them get started." Placer Robotics says this is just the beginning. The organization plans to launch a new robotics league later this year, expanding opportunities for students to engage in hands-on engineering and innovation.
