Three talking points from Barcelona 3-1 Benfica
It was always clear that the first goal on under night would be critical in deciding the flow of the game and Raphinha delivered that much-needed goal for Barcelona in just the 11th minute.
Benfica's instant response with an equaliser reduced Barcelona's lead back to just one goal but Yamal and Raphinha struck again to make it 4-1 on aggregate and assure the dressing room of a place in the quarterfinal.
Barça Universal brings you three talking points from Barcelona 3-1 Benfica.
There may not be two better wingers in world football than Lamine Yamal and Raphinha at this moment and Barcelona are lucky to have both in their ranks.
The duo, despite having contrasting playing styles, have a common threat factor in the final third and last night exemplified how ruthless they can be with quality and precision.
Lamine was at the heart of Barcelona's first two goals against Benfica and produced moments of magic on both occasions to create goals out of thin air.
His dribble to get into the Benfica box for the opener was a thing of beauty as left the defence bamboozled and found a perfectly timed cross to Raphinha. His goal was one of superior beauty as he chipped the ball over the defence into the back of the net from a distance.
Yamal's threat down the right flank was a constant during his time on the field and he created openings with almost every attacking push.
Raphinha, meanwhile, was the epitome of precision. He was at the right place at the right time to score off Yamal's assist and then struck from distance with a precise shot to complete his brace.
While the limelight is rightfully focused on Yamal and Raphinha, Barcelona's defence put up a sensational shift to constantly hold the offside trap and keep Benfica from coming back into the game after their early goal.
Ronald Araujo and Alejandro Balde, in particular, were simply dominant.
The former replaced Pau Cubarsi at centre-back last night and a lot was said about how his deployment would have a negative impact if Barcelona were to play a high-line.
Araujo, however, showed that he is adapting to Flick's plans as he held his line to near perfection and never looked like a loose screw.
His distribution was promising and he deserves credit for the manner in which he not only resiliently defended but kept Benfica constantly offside.
Balde also enjoyed a very special night and was simply unplayable at left-back for Barcelona. Despite being tasked with a serious defensive task, the Spaniard terrorised Benfica's right flank as he constantly pushed forward and got past his men to break free.
In fact, it was he who pioneered Barcelona's third goal on the night through a vicious counter-attack which Raphinha eventually converted.
The 3-1 scoreline last night and the 4-1 result on aggregate meant Barcelona qualified for the next round of the UEFA Champions League and into the business end of the campaign.
Despite facing serious pressure against Benfica, especially in the first leg, Barcelona kept their cool and completed their win with reasonable comfort. Last night's game with 22 players on the field was decided before half-time and it is clear that the team are still going strong.
Now into the final eight, Barcelona will meet one of Borussia Dortmund or Lille in the quarterfinal. The first leg in Germany ended in a 1-1 draw and Lille have the home advantage for tonight's eliminator.
The rest of the road to Munich is also shaping up well with Inter Milan and Bayern Munich both winning their games and qualifying for the quarter-finals. Barcelona will meet the winner of the game between the two giants in a potential semifinal.
The biggest development of the night, needless to say, was the elimination of Liverpool at the hands of PSG. The top-placed team in the league stage is thus out of the competition now and will not threaten Barcelona's chances of tasting the silverware in any capacity.

Hansi Flick reacts to Manchester United interest in Barcelona star
Barcelona need to make sales to continue generating funds that will help them to return to La Liga's 1:1 rule by the end of the summer, although it has been difficult to move on the likes of Marc-Andre Ter Stegen and Andreas Christensen. Other players are noted as possible departees, with one of them being Fermin Lopez. The arrival of Marcus Rashford, which will see Raphinha used more centrally next season, means that Fermin is likely to see less action, given that he also has Dani Olmo ahead of him in the pecking order. This has led to suggestions that Barcelona could entertain offers for Fermin, with a minimum asking price of €70m having been set. And according to recent reports, Manchester United are prepared to pay this for the 22-year-old. Image via Josep Lago/AFP Hansi Flick puts his foot down amid Man United interest But despite this, it would be a surprise to see Fermin leave Barcelona this summer. As reported by MD, head coach Hansi Flick has made it clear that he wants the young midfielder to remain at the club. The report has also stated that Flick was made aware of previous reports of Fermin's possible departure, at which point he made it clear to the player himself that he wants him to stay. And it was during this meeting that the Man United target admitted that he has no plans nor desire to depart. Fermin has been very impressive since breaking into the Barcelona first team two summers ago, and given his age, he is one of several players that will be trusted to lead the squad for many years to come. It is no surprise that Flick wants him to stay, even if there is a chance that he does not play all too often during the upcoming 2025-26 season.

Sporting director reveals Barcelona negotiations for Alexander Isak
Barcelona have had to be smart in the transfer market over the last five years due to their well-documented financial problems. Signing players ahead of the curve is essential, and that's exactly that they did with Pedri. The midfielder, who has developed into one of the world's best in his position, was signed in 2020 as a 17-year-old. It was a risk taken at the time, but it was one that has certainly paid off. And it was made by then-sporting director Ramon Planes, who spoke on the Spain international during an interview with Sport. 'I was told about a young player at Las Palmas whose level was head and shoulders above the rest of his teammates. We watched him for three matches and it was enough – we knew. We decided to sign him, even though we rarely go for players that young. That player was Pedri. My team and I simply trusted our gut.' ImagePlanes opens up on Barcelona pursuit of Alexander Isak Planes, who was at Barcelona between 2018 and 2021, also revealed that Alexander Isak, who is currently being pursued by Liverpool as part of a deal with Newcastle United that would cost well in excess of €120m, could have made the move to the Spotify Camp Nou when he was still at Real Sociedad. 'We had been trying to find a replacement in such a difficult position for a long time. Now I find it funny when they talk about Isak, who is in some negotiation and with a very important offer from Liverpool. A player with whom we were talking with his agent. He was at La Real and our idea was to look for a replacement for Luis (Suarez), in that he would be a squad player at first before becoming a regular starter. 'This process of change was natural, but well, it couldn't be, but I do think it's key in clubs to know that players can leave at the right time and that the entry of the new generations is in a clean way.'

Barcelona youngster drops future hint amid mounting transfer rumours
An up-and-coming member of the attacking ranks at La Liga giants Barcelona has this week dropped a possible hint regarding his plans for the season ahead. The player in question? Jan Virgili. The name of winger Virgili has of course emerged as a prominent one in the transfer chatter surrounding Barcelona over recent days. This comes amid the understanding that, after a stellar showing with Spain at the U19 European Championships this summer, the starlet has emerged as a leading transfer target on the part of RCD Mallorca. Not only that, but Virgili, facing up to a season in Spain's 4th tier following Barca Atlètic's shock relegation, is said to have made clear his readiness to make the move to Son Moix. The two clubs, in turn, have kicked into gear negotiations over the terms of a potential transfer. As alluded to above, though, in the thick of the speculation surrounding his name, Virgili himself has late this week hinted that he remains fully committed to the cause in Barcelona. This comes with the 18-year-old having taken to his official Instagram account, to unveil a photo of himself donning Blaugrana colours: Conor Laird – GSFN
