La Fiamma's women's team stars in Perth at the Women's League Cup
The squad faced Wanneroo in their first game in the Women's League Cup last weekend. Wanneroo were coming off clean sheet wins — 12-0 win in their first game and a 5-0 win in their second game.
It was a quick start from La Fiamma with Chilean player Monse Fernandez scoring in the first three minutes, shocking the opposition in the process.
Macie Gray scored the second goal for La Fiamma in the 10th minute extending their lead to 2-0 early in the piece, well and truly putting Wanneroo on the back foot.
Indiana Burns came through in the 18th minute with a goal, with Olivia Bidwell following up in the 31st minute and Cassie Green in the 33rd minute, making it 5-0 to La Fiamma.
With a 5-0 lead at half-time La Fiamma jumped out the blocks in the second half with a Bidwell goal in the 46th minute.
Fernandez found the back of the net once more in the 54th minute, drawing La Fiamma's lead out to 7-0 and piling more scoreboard pressure onto Wanneroo.
Bidwell scored her hat-trick in the 79th minute just a day after her game for Towns back home.
In the final minute Paige Carslake scored the final goal for La Fiamma, finishing 9-0 victors.
La Fiamma's coach Mark Gray said he couldn't have asked for a better outcome after a long road trip to Perth.
'I couldn't have asked for anything more, they were incredible,' he said.
'They gave it their all and put together one of the best games I have seen them play in the five years I have been coaching them.
'It has been something that they have been wanting for a number of years, to go down to Perth and compete with the best and to see them smash it out of the park was really special.'
Opening the door for women to have the opportunity to play in Perth like the men's team, Gray said it was vital to growing the women's game in the Mid West.
'It gives the girls an opportunity to test themselves against other teams in Perth,' Gray said.
'It just opens up more possibilities for women in this sport and I think that is really important for the growth of the game here.'
The squad will continue to play in Geraldton and in the Women's League Cup this season.

Niemann on track for fifth LIV Golf success of season
Joaquin Niemann has opened up a six-stroke lead heading into the final round at LIV Golf United Kingdom. The Torque GC captain moved to 14-under par with an eight-under 65 on Saturday at the JCB Golf and Country Club in Rocester, England. The Chilean racked up nine birdies with a lone bogey at the par-4 15th hole. Bubba Watson (68) is in solo second at eight under, while fellow American Caleb Surratt (68), England's Paul Casey (68) and Poland's Adrian Meronk (70) are tied for third at seven under. Niemann, already a four-time winner on the LIV Golf tour this season, taking him to six overall, is looking to add his to his titles at Adelaide, Singapore, Mexico City and Virginia. "I had a great time. I made a lot of putts," he said. "I was laughing at it sometimes because I'm not used to seeing so many of those going in, and it's kind of cool to see that. "Other than that, I hit some good shots. Everything felt pretty much under control, off the tee, irons, putting. Yeah, just pretty happy the way I've been going through the last two days." Niemann, who was joint-second here last year, had five birdies on the front nine, including three in a row at Nos. 1-3. Niemann's Torque GC are also in front for the team championship at 24 under, three shots ahead of Legion XIII as they seek a first team title since 2023. Watson knows it will take a hot round and perhaps poor weather to keep Niemann off the top of the podium. "He's playing so good, you don't expect him to do anything, like come backwards," Watson said. "Wind direction - I haven't looked at the weather. That can change a golf course or how we play it, pin setups. "But we're going to give it our all and then hopefully that's good enough." Five players are tied for sixth at six under, including Australia's Marc Leishman (71). His Ripper GC captain Cameron Smith (72) sits at four under, with fellow teammates Matt Jones (72) two under and Lucas Herbert (74) one under.

Leishman finishes strong to chase leader Meronk in LIV
Marc Leishman birdied four of his last six holes to claw his way into contention after the opening round of the LIV Golf tournament in Hemel Hempstead. The Australian was even par on the front nine before storming home with birdies on the 13th, 15th, 16th and 18th for a four-under 67. He is two behind a trio of leaders comprising Adrian Meronk of Poland, Chilean Joaquin Niemann and Branden Grace at Centurion Club. Meronk used a run of five birdies in six holes for his 65. Bubba Watson is in a three-way tie for fourth place at five under with Englishman Lee Westwood and Carlos Ortiz of Mexico. The group of four joining Leishman at four under, tied for seventh overall, comprises England's Paul Casey and Tyrrell Hatton, and American Caleb Surratt. Meronk was a mere one under through seven holes after a bogey five at the sixth. He had consecutive birdies at Nos.8 and 9 before making par on the par-five No.10. He then rattled off three consecutive birdies, including the last at the 639-yard, par-5 13th hole. After winning the season-opening event at Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, in February, Meronk has his game back on track. "It's nice to be in this position again, obviously getting off to a good start this season," Meronk said. "Finally I'm enjoying myself on the course and playing good golf again, which is quite exciting. It's great to be back in this position, and I'm really looking forward to this weekend and to three more tournaments this year." Niemann had four birdies on the front nine and finished off a bogey-free round with a par on the final five holes of the day. With three events remaining in the season after this week, all in the United States, Niemann sits atop the player standings. "I think I'm on a really privileged situation to be on the top of the rankings and being chased by Jon (Rahm) and Bryson (DeChambeau)," said Niemann, who has won four times this season. "It just makes me a better athlete. I like that pressure. I like playing like that. I've just got to try my best." Grace was at seven under on the day before a bogey at the par-4 15th hole. He finished his round with three consecutive pars. Watson was set to join the leaders at six under until a bogey at the 244-yard, par-3 17th hole. He entered the week 31st in the overall standings and is in the "Open Zone" as relegation approaches, but well above the "Drop Zone" line. "There's a lot more stress, 100 per cent," Watson said. "... There's a lot of having to step up and hit great golf shots because they know what's on the line to be in an elite league like this. "They want a contract. They want to be able to play here next year, so there's a lot of stress out there for sure." Westwood is in 45th place in the overall standings and much improved after a strong showing in the LIV event at Virginia in June. "Golf is the type of game where you feel like you've finally got it and it doesn't give you the score that you think you should do, right? It never quite lets you," Westwood said. "But then that final round (at Virginia), I shot nine-under I think, and that was kind of the trigger to give me some confidence that the good stuff I was working on on the range and on the putting green and on the short game area was paying off score-wise." Australian Cameron Smith is at three under and in a tie for 11th with Lucas Herbert a shot further behind. Smith at one stage was five under and tied second but was cruelled by back-to-back closing bogeys. Matt Jones is at one under and equal 24th.
